Seized with supreme fury, the mighty Ravana took up that spear in battle, surrounded by heroic Rakshasas in the midst of the army.
Raising his massive form, he roared dreadfully on the battlefield, his eyes bloodshot with rage, exulting his own troops.
Then the dreadful sound of the Rakshasa lord shook the earth, the sky, the quarters, and the intermediate directions.
At the roar of that evil-minded Atikaya, all beings were terrified, and even the ocean was agitated.
Having seized that great spear, the mighty Ravana, letting out a tremendous roar, harshly addressed Rama.
'This spear, hard as diamond, Rama, raised by me in wrath, will at once take the lives of you and your brother's allies.'
'Having slain you, the boaster in battle, I shall swiftly make myself equal to the heroic Rakshasas who have fallen today at the front.'
'Stand now, Raghava! I will slay you with this spear.' Having spoken thus, the Rakshasa lord hurled that spear.
Released from Ravana's hand, wreathed in flashes of lightning, adorned with eight bells, emitting a great sound, it shone as it soared through the sky.
Seeing that blazing, fearsome spear, Rama, the mighty one, drew his bow and released arrows.
Raghava blocked the oncoming spear with a torrent of arrows, just as Indra would quench the world-ending fire with streams of water.
That great spear of Ravana burned up the arrows shot from Rama's bow, like fire consuming moths.
Seeing his arrows in the sky reduced to ashes, crushed to powder by contact with the spear, Raghava was seized with fury.
Then Rāghava, the delight of the Raghu line, seized that spear, honored by Indra, which had been brought by Mātali, his anger at its peak.
That spear, lifted with great force and ringing like a bell, blazed in the sky with its own radiance, like a comet at the end of an age.
Hurled at the king of the Rākṣasas, that spear struck his trident; shattered by the spear, the great trident fell, its brilliance gone.
Then Rāma, with sharp, swift arrows like thunderbolts and straight-flying, pierced the swift horses of Rāvaṇa's chariot.
At that moment, Rāghava, fully intent, pierced Rāvaṇa in the chest with keen arrows, and struck his forehead with three shafts.
His whole body pierced by arrows, blood streaming from his limbs, the king of the Rākṣasas stood amidst the host, shining like a blossoming aśoka tree.
His body deeply wounded by Rāma's arrows, the lord of night-wanderers, his limbs soaked in blood, grew weary in the midst of the assembly and at that moment was seized by intense anger.
Hear now the one hundred and third sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Then, tormented by Kākutstha's wrath, Rāvaṇa, proud of his prowess in battle, was overcome by a great fury.
His eyes blazing, filled with rage, the mighty Rāvaṇa, raising his bow, fiercely pressed the attack against Rāghava in that supreme combat.
With thousands of streams of arrows, like a raincloud pouring from the sky, Rāvaṇa flooded Rāghava with arrows as if filling a lake.
Though enveloped in a net of arrows loosed from the bow in battle, Kākutstha stood unmoved, like a great mountain unshaken.
Standing firm in battle, he blocked the showers of arrows with his own, receiving them like the rays of the sun, his valor undiminished.
Then the night-stalker, swift-handed and enraged, struck the great-souled Rāghava in the chest with thousands of arrows.
Lakṣmaṇa's elder brother, his body stained with blood in the battle, appeared like a great kiṃśuka tree blossoming in the forest.
Incited by the blows of arrows, Kākutstha, of immense energy, seized his own shafts, shining like the sun at the end of an age.
Then, both Rāma and Rāvaṇa, fiercely enraged, could not see each other in the darkness of arrows on the battlefield.
