The spear, adorned with gold, fell to the ground split in three, blazing and sparking, like a great meteor fallen from the sky.
Then, after some time, he seized a mighty spear, difficult to withstand even with time, blazing with its own brilliance.
That weapon, seized with force by the evil-minded Rāvaṇa, blazed with immense energy, shining like a flaming thunderbolt.
At that moment, the heroic Lakṣmaṇa swiftly approached Vibhīṣaṇa, who had fallen into mortal danger.
To free him, the valiant Lakṣmaṇa, drawing his bow, showered Rāvaṇa—who held the spear—with a rain of arrows.
Assailed by the torrent of arrows released by the great-souled Lakṣmaṇa, Rāvaṇa, his courage shaken, could not bring himself to strike.
Seeing his brother freed by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāvaṇa, standing facing Lakṣmaṇa, spoke these words:
"Because Vibhīṣaṇa, who boasts of his strength, has been freed by you, this spear, having missed the Rākṣasa, will now be directed at you."
"This spear, marked with blood, hurled by my intoxicated arm, will pierce your heart and carry away your life."
Having spoken thus, that great-sounding spear, adorned with eight bells, fashioned by Maya through illusion, unfailing and destroyer of enemies,
Rāvaṇa, exceedingly enraged, aimed at Lakṣmaṇa that blazing weapon, and hurled it with a roar.
Hurled with terrible speed, the spear, roaring like thunder and lightning, rushed violently toward Lakṣmaṇa at the center of the battle.
As that spear sped toward Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma recited, "May there be safety for Lakṣmaṇa; become futile, O weapon, your effort is in vain!"
Released in battle by the enraged Rāvaṇa, that spear, like a venomous serpent, sank into the brave but now fearful Lakṣmaṇa.
That mighty, blazing spear, like the tongues of the serpent king, fell with great force upon Lakṣmaṇa's broad chest.
Then, struck deeply by the spear hurled with Rāvaṇa's force, Lakṣmaṇa, his heart pierced, collapsed to the ground.
Seeing Lakṣmaṇa in that condition nearby, Rāma, possessed of great energy, was overcome with grief out of brotherly affection.
After reflecting for a moment, his eyes brimming with tears, he became intensely enraged, like fire at the end of an age.
Thinking, 'This is not the time for despair,' Rāma, determined to slay Rāvaṇa, engaged in a fierce battle, all the while carefully watching over Lakṣmaṇa with utmost effort.
Then Rama saw Lakshmana, struck by the spear in the great battle, covered in blood, lying like a mountain with a serpent.
Even the best of the monkeys, despite their efforts, could not withstand the spear sent by the mighty Ravana.
Pierced by a shower of arrows from the fierce Rakshasas, that spear, having struck Saumitri, entered the earth.
Rama, grasping that fearsome spear with his hands, broke it in battle, enraged and powerful, and dragged it away.
As Rama was pulling out the spear, Ravana, mighty in strength, struck him with arrows that pierced all his limbs.
Ignoring those arrows, embracing Lakshmana, he spoke to Hanuman and Sugriva, the great monkey.
Surround Lakshmana and stand firm, O foremost monkeys; the time for my long-desired valor has now arrived.
This ten-headed wicked soul, resolved in evil, must be slain; as a chataka bird longs for clouds at summer's end, so do I.
Within this moment, I promise you truly: you will see the world either without Ravana or without Rama, O monkeys.
The loss of my kingdom, dwelling in the forest, wandering in Dandaka, the suffering of Vaidehi, and encounters with Rakshasas—
All the terrible suffering, the torment like hell, that I have endured, today I will abandon it all by slaying Ravana in battle.
