When that weapon was repelled, Ravana, lord of the Rakshasas, doubled his anger and, from that wrath, immediately prepared another weapon.
Ravana, of great splendor, began to unleash a terrifying weapon, crafted by Maya, against Raghava.
Then spears, maces, and clubs emerged, all blazing and made of adamant, from his bow.
Maces, spiked nooses, and blazing hunger-missiles of many fierce kinds burst forth, sharp as winds at the end of an age.
That weapon, Rama—glorious, foremost among masters of supreme weapons—destroyed with a most excellent Gandharva missile, radiant in his might.
When that weapon was repelled by the great-souled Rama, Ravana, his eyes reddened with rage, unleashed the solar missile.
Then, from the bow of ten-headed, wise Ravana of terrible speed, great and shining discs emerged.
By those flying everywhere, the sky blazed, and the directions shone with falling, radiant missiles, like the sun, moon, and planets.
Rama cut down those discs and Ravana's wondrous weapons at the front of the army with volleys of arrows.
Seeing that weapon destroyed, Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, pierced Rama in all his vital points with ten arrows.
Struck by ten arrows shot from Ravana's great bow, Rama, mighty in splendor, did not waver.
Then Rama, victorious in battle and deeply enraged, struck Ravana with many arrows all over his body.
At that moment, Lakshmana, Rama's powerful younger brother, seized seven arrows in his wrath, slayer of enemy heroes.
With those swift arrows, Lakshmana of great brilliance cut down Ravana's banner, which bore a human head, in many pieces.
Lakshmana, illustrious and mighty, also struck off the head of Ravana's charioteer, adorned with blazing earrings, with an arrow.
Then Lakshmana, with five sharp arrows, cut down the bow of the rakshasa king, massive as an elephant's trunk.
Vibhishana leapt up and, with his mace, struck down Ravana's steeds—dark as rain clouds, massive as mountains.
When his horses were slain, Ravana leapt swiftly from his great chariot and was seized by fierce anger against his brother.
Then the mighty Ravana, lord of rakshasas, hurled at Vibhishana a blazing spear, like a thunderbolt.
But before it reached him, Lakshmana cut it down with three arrows, and then a great roar rose from the vanaras on the battlefield.
The spear, adorned with gold, fell to the ground split in three, blazing and sparking, like a great meteor fallen from the sky.
Then, after some time, he seized a mighty spear, difficult to withstand even with time, blazing with its own brilliance.
That weapon, seized with force by the evil-minded Rāvaṇa, blazed with immense energy, shining like a flaming thunderbolt.
At that moment, the heroic Lakṣmaṇa swiftly approached Vibhīṣaṇa, who had fallen into mortal danger.
To free him, the valiant Lakṣmaṇa, drawing his bow, showered Rāvaṇa—who held the spear—with a rain of arrows.
Assailed by the torrent of arrows released by the great-souled Lakṣmaṇa, Rāvaṇa, his courage shaken, could not bring himself to strike.
Seeing his brother freed by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāvaṇa, standing facing Lakṣmaṇa, spoke these words:
"Because Vibhīṣaṇa, who boasts of his strength, has been freed by you, this spear, having missed the Rākṣasa, will now be directed at you."
"This spear, marked with blood, hurled by my intoxicated arm, will pierce your heart and carry away your life."
Having spoken thus, that great-sounding spear, adorned with eight bells, fashioned by Maya through illusion, unfailing and destroyer of enemies,
