अश्वाञ्जघान तरसा बभञ्ज स्यन्दनं च तम्। मुहूर्ताल्लब्धसंज्ञस्तु महापार्श्वो महाबलः
Angered, he seized a huge rock resembling a mountain peak, and with force struck the horses and broke the chariot; after a moment, Mahaparsva, mighty in strength, regained consciousness.
अङ्गदं बहुभिर्बाणैर्भूयस्तं प्रत्यविध्यत। जाम्बवन्तं त्रिभिर्बाणैराजघान स्तनान्तरे
He struck Aṅgada with many arrows, and wounded Jāmbavān in the chest with three arrows.
ऋक्षराजं गवाक्षं च जघान बहुभिः शरैः। गवाक्षं जाम्बवन्तं च स दृष्ट्वा शरपीडितौ
He struck the king of the bears and Gavākṣa with many arrows; seeing Gavākṣa and Jāmbavān afflicted by arrows—
जग्राह परिघं घोरमङ्गदः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। तस्याङ्गदः सरोषाक्षो राक्षसस्य तमायसम्
Aṅgada, overcome with anger, seized a terrible iron club belonging to the Rākṣasa, his eyes blazing with wrath.
दूरस्थितस्य परिघं रविरश्मिसमप्रभम्। द्वाभ्यां भुजाभ्यां संगृह्य भ्रामयित्वा च वेगवत्
Grasping that club, shining like the sun's rays, with both hands from a distance, he whirled it about with great speed.
महापार्श्वस्य चिक्षेप वधार्थं वालिनः सुतः। स तु क्षिप्तो बलवता परिघस्तस्य रक्षसः
Vali's son hurled it at Mahāpārśva to kill him; and that club, thrown by the mighty one, struck the Rākṣasa.
धनुश्च सशरं हस्ताच्छिरस्त्राणं च पातयत्। तं समासाद्य वेगेन वालिपुत्रः प्रतापवान्
It knocked from his hand his bow with arrows and his helmet; then Vali's heroic son, rushing at him—
तलेनाभ्यहनत् क्रुद्धः कर्णमूले सकुण्डले। स तु क्रुद्धो महावेगो महापार्श्वो महाद्युतिः
Struck him in anger with his palm at the base of the ear, where the earring was; but Mahāpārśva, furious and of great energy—
करेणैकेन जग्राह सुमहान्तं परश्वधम्। तं तैलधौतं विमलं शैलसारमयं दृढम्
With one hand seized a massive battle-axe, well-oiled, spotless, made of mountain ore, and firm.
राक्षसः परमक्रुद्धो वालिपुत्रे न्यपातयत्। तेन वामांसफलके भृशं प्रत्यवपातितम्
The exceedingly enraged Rākṣasa brought it down upon Vali's son; but Aṅgada, struck hard on his left shoulder—
अङ्गदो मोक्षयामास सरोषः स परश्वधम्। स वीरो वज्रसंकाशमङ्गदो मुष्टिमात्मनः
Freed himself from the battle-axe in anger; then the heroic Aṅgada, with a fist like a thunderbolt—
संवर्तयत् सुसंक्रुद्धः पितुस्तुल्यपराक्रमः। राक्षसस्य स्तनाभ्याशे मर्मज्ञो हृदयं प्रति
Gathered his strength in great wrath, equal in valor to his father, and aimed at the Rākṣasa's chest, knowing the vital spot.
इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शं स मुष्टिं विन्यपातयत्। तेन तस्य निपातेन राक्षसस्य महामृधे
He struck with his fist, whose touch was like Indra's thunderbolt; by that blow in the great battle—
पफाल हृदयं चास्य स पपात हतो भुवि। तस्मिन् विनिहते भूमौ तत् सैन्यं सम्प्रचुक्षुभे
The Rākṣasa's heart split, and he fell slain to the ground; when he was struck down upon the earth, that army was thrown into turmoil.
अभवच्च महान् क्रोधः समरे रावणस्य तु। वानराणां प्रहृष्टानां सिंहनादः सुपुष्कलः
Then great wrath arose in Rāvaṇa on the battlefield; and the delighted monkeys gave forth a mighty lion's roar.
स्फोटयन्निव शब्देन लङ्कां साट्टालगोपुराम्। सहेन्द्रेणेव देवानां नादः समभवन्महान्
With their sound, as if shattering Laṅkā with its attālas and gateways, a great roar arose, like that of Indra among the gods.
अथेन्द्रशत्रुस्त्रिदशालयानां वनौकसां चैव महाप्रणादम्। श्रुत्वा सरोषं युधि राक्षसेन्द्रः पुनश्च युद्धाभिमुखोऽवतस्थे
Then the enemy of Indra, the lord of the Rākṣasas, hearing in battle the mighty uproar of the gods and forest-dwellers from their abodes, again stood forth, eager for combat.

महोदरमहापार्श्वौ हतौ दृष्ट्वा स रावणः। तस्मिंश्च निहते वीरे विरूपाक्षे महाबले
Seeing Mahodara and Mahāpārśva slain, and that hero Virūpākṣa, mighty in battle, struck down—
आविवेश महान् क्रोधो रावणं तु महामृधे। सूतं संचोदयामास वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह
A great fury entered Rāvaṇa in that mighty battle; he urged on his charioteer and spoke these words:
निहतानाममात्यानां रुद्धस्य नगरस्य च। दुःखमेवापनेष्यामि हत्वा तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
I will dispel my sorrow for my slain ministers and my besieged city by killing those two, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
रामवृक्षं रणे हन्मि सीतापुष्पफलप्रदम्। प्रशाखा यस्य सुग्रीवो जाम्बवान् कुमुदो नलः
In battle, I will cut down the tree that is Rāma, which gives Sītā as its flower and fruit, whose branches are Sugrīva, Jāmbavān, Kumuda, and Nala.
द्विविदश्चैव मैन्दश्च अङ्गदो गन्धमादनः। हनूमांश्च सुषेणश्च सर्वे च हरियूथपाः
And also Dvivida, Mainda, Aṅgada, Gandhamādana, Hanūmān, Suṣeṇa, and all the chiefs of the monkey hosts.
स दिशो दश घोषेण रथस्यातिरथो महान्। नादयन् प्रययौ तूर्णं राघवं चाभ्यधावत
That mighty chariot-warrior, resounding in all ten directions with the roar of his chariot, swiftly set out and rushed toward Rāghava.
पूरिता तेन शब्देन सनदीगिरिकानना। संचचाल मही सर्वा त्रस्तसिंहमृगद्विजा
By that sound, the earth along with its mountains and forests was filled; the whole land trembled, and lions, deer, and birds were terrified.
तामसं सुमहाघोरं चकारास्त्रं सुदारुणम्। निर्ददाह कपीन् सर्वांस्ते प्रपेतुः समन्ततः
He unleashed a most dreadful, dark, and terrible weapon, burning all the monkeys, who scattered in every direction.
उत्पपात रजो भूमौ तैर्भग्नैः सम्प्रधावितैः। नहि तत् सहितुं शेकुर्ब्रह्मणा निर्मितं स्वयम्
Dust rose up on the ground as they were broken and fled; for they could not withstand that weapon, which had been created by Brahmā himself.
तान्यनीकान्यनेकानि रावणस्य शरोत्तमैः। दृष्ट्वा भग्नानि शतशो राघवः पर्यवस्थितः
Seeing hundreds of Rāvaṇa's armies shattered by his excellent arrows, Rāghava stood firm.
ततो राक्षसशार्दूलो विद्राव्य हरिवाहिनीम्। स ददर्श ततो रामं तिष्ठन्तमपराजितम्
Then the tiger among rākṣasas, having scattered the monkey army, saw Rāma standing there, undefeated.
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा विष्णुना वासवं यथा। आलिखन्तमिवाकाशमवष्टभ्य महद् धनुः
With his brother Lakṣmaṇa beside him, as Viṣṇu stands with Indra, he seemed to draw on the sky itself, grasping his great bow.
