राक्षसश्चर्मणा सार्धं महावेगो महोदरः। तथैव च महाखड्गं चर्मणा पतितं सह। जग्राह वानरश्रेष्ठः सुग्रीवो वेगवत्तरः
The demon Mahodara, swift as the wind, took up his shield, and likewise the great sword that had fallen with it; so too did the foremost of monkeys, the even swifter Sugriva.
ततो रोषपरीताङ्गौ नदन्तावभ्यधावताम्। उद्यतासी रणे हृष्टौ युधि शस्त्रविशारदौ
Then, their bodies filled with wrath, roaring, they rushed at each other in battle, swords raised, delighted, both skilled in the art of war.
दक्षिणं मण्डलं चोभौ सुतूर्णं सम्परीयतुः। अन्योन्यमभिसंक्रुद्धौ जये प्रणिहितावुभौ
Both, intent on victory and enraged with each other, swiftly circled to the right, each seeking an opening.
स तु शूरो महावेगो वीर्यश्लाघी महोदरः। महावर्मणि तं खड्गं पातयामास दुर्मतिः
That valiant, swift, and strength-boasting Mahodara, blinded by evil intent, struck his sword upon the great armor.
लग्नमुत्कर्षतः खड्गं खड्गेन कपिकुञ्जरः। जहार सशिरस्त्राणं कुण्डलोपगतं शिरः
But the monkey-warrior, raising his sword, seized the sword with his own, and cut off the head adorned with helmet and earrings.
निकृत्तशिरसस्तस्य पतितस्य महीतले। तद् बलं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य दृष्ट्वा तत्र न दृश्यते
When his severed head fell to the earth, the army of the king of the rakshasas vanished from sight upon witnessing it.
हत्वा तं वानरैः सार्धं ननाद मुदितो हरिः। चुक्रोध च दशग्रीवो बभौ हृष्टश्च राघवः
Having slain him, the delighted monkey roared together with the vanaras; Ravana grew enraged, and Rama shone with joy.
विषण्णवदनाः सर्वे राक्षसा दीनचेतसः। विद्रवन्ति ततः सर्वे भयवित्रस्तचेतसः
All the rakshasas, faces downcast and hearts dejected, fled in fear, their minds terrified.
महोदरं तं विनिपात्य भूमौ महागिरेः कीर्णमिवैकदेशम्। सूर्यात्मजस्तत्र रराज लक्ष्म्या सूर्यः स्वतेजोभिरिवाप्रधृष्यः
Having cast Mahodara down upon the ground, like a portion of a great mountain scattered, the son of the sun shone there in splendor, like the sun himself, unapproachable in his own brilliance.
अथ विजयमवाप्य वानरेन्द्रः समरमुखे सुरसिद्धयक्षसङ्घैः। अवनितलगतैश्च भूतसङ्घै- र्हरुषसमाकुलितैर्निरीक्ष्यमाणः
Then, having attained victory, the monkey king was observed at the forefront of battle by hosts of gods, siddhas, and yakshas, and by groups of beings dwelling upon the earth, all filled with joy.

महोदरे तु निहते महापार्श्वो महाबलः। सुग्रीवेण समीक्ष्याथ क्रोधात् संरक्तलोचनः
When Mahodara was slain, the mighty Mahaparsva, his eyes reddened with anger, gazed at Sugriva.
अङ्गदस्य चमूं भीमां क्षोभयामास मार्गणैः। स वानराणां मुख्यानामुत्तमाङ्गानि राक्षसः
He began to disturb Angada’s formidable army with arrows, and the rakshasa struck the heads of the foremost vanaras.
पातयामास कायेभ्यः फलं वृन्तादिवानिलः। केषांचिदिषुभिर्बाहूंश्चिच्छेदाथ स राक्षसः
He knocked fruits from bodies as the wind does from branches, and with arrows he cut off the arms of some vanaras.
वानराणां सुसंरब्धः पार्श्वं केषांचिदाक्षिपत्। तेऽर्दिता बाणवर्षेण महापार्श्वेन वानराः
Fiercely enraged, Mahaparsva attacked the sides of some vanaras; those vanaras, struck by his shower of arrows, were tormented.
विषादविमुखाः सर्वे बभूवुर्गतचेतसः। निशम्य बलमुद्विग्नमङ्गदो राक्षसार्दितम्
All became despondent and turned away, their minds lost; Angada, hearing the distressed and wounded army, was troubled.
वेगं चक्रे महावेगः समुद्र इव पर्वसु। आयसं परिघं गृह्य सूर्यरश्मिसमप्रभम्
With great speed, like the ocean at its full, he seized an iron club shining like the rays of the sun.
समरे वानरश्रेष्ठो महापार्श्वे न्यपातयत्। स तु तेन प्रहारेण महापार्श्वो विचेतनः
The foremost of vanaras struck Mahaparsva in battle with it.
ससूतः स्यन्दनात् तस्माद् विसंज्ञश्चापतद् भुवि। तस्यर्क्षराजस्तेजस्वी नीलाञ्जनचयोपमः
From that blow, Mahaparsva lost consciousness and, along with his charioteer, fell from his chariot to the ground.
निष्पत्य सुमहावीर्यः स्वयूथान्मेघसंनिभात्। प्रगृह्य गिरिशृङ्गाभां क्रुद्धः स विपुलां शिलाम्
Then the illustrious king of bears, resembling a mass of dark collyrium, leapt forth with immense strength from his troops, which were like clouds.
अश्वाञ्जघान तरसा बभञ्ज स्यन्दनं च तम्। मुहूर्ताल्लब्धसंज्ञस्तु महापार्श्वो महाबलः
Angered, he seized a huge rock resembling a mountain peak, and with force struck the horses and broke the chariot; after a moment, Mahaparsva, mighty in strength, regained consciousness.
अङ्गदं बहुभिर्बाणैर्भूयस्तं प्रत्यविध्यत। जाम्बवन्तं त्रिभिर्बाणैराजघान स्तनान्तरे
He struck Aṅgada with many arrows, and wounded Jāmbavān in the chest with three arrows.
ऋक्षराजं गवाक्षं च जघान बहुभिः शरैः। गवाक्षं जाम्बवन्तं च स दृष्ट्वा शरपीडितौ
He struck the king of the bears and Gavākṣa with many arrows; seeing Gavākṣa and Jāmbavān afflicted by arrows—
जग्राह परिघं घोरमङ्गदः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। तस्याङ्गदः सरोषाक्षो राक्षसस्य तमायसम्
Aṅgada, overcome with anger, seized a terrible iron club belonging to the Rākṣasa, his eyes blazing with wrath.
दूरस्थितस्य परिघं रविरश्मिसमप्रभम्। द्वाभ्यां भुजाभ्यां संगृह्य भ्रामयित्वा च वेगवत्
Grasping that club, shining like the sun's rays, with both hands from a distance, he whirled it about with great speed.
महापार्श्वस्य चिक्षेप वधार्थं वालिनः सुतः। स तु क्षिप्तो बलवता परिघस्तस्य रक्षसः
Vali's son hurled it at Mahāpārśva to kill him; and that club, thrown by the mighty one, struck the Rākṣasa.
धनुश्च सशरं हस्ताच्छिरस्त्राणं च पातयत्। तं समासाद्य वेगेन वालिपुत्रः प्रतापवान्
It knocked from his hand his bow with arrows and his helmet; then Vali's heroic son, rushing at him—
तलेनाभ्यहनत् क्रुद्धः कर्णमूले सकुण्डले। स तु क्रुद्धो महावेगो महापार्श्वो महाद्युतिः
Struck him in anger with his palm at the base of the ear, where the earring was; but Mahāpārśva, furious and of great energy—
करेणैकेन जग्राह सुमहान्तं परश्वधम्। तं तैलधौतं विमलं शैलसारमयं दृढम्
With one hand seized a massive battle-axe, well-oiled, spotless, made of mountain ore, and firm.
राक्षसः परमक्रुद्धो वालिपुत्रे न्यपातयत्। तेन वामांसफलके भृशं प्रत्यवपातितम्
The exceedingly enraged Rākṣasa brought it down upon Vali's son; but Aṅgada, struck hard on his left shoulder—
