He released dreadful arrows at Sugrīva in the midst of the army, causing alarm among the monkeys and delighting the rākṣasas.
Struck severely by those sharp arrows from the rākṣasa, the monkey king cried out in great fury and resolved to kill him.
Then the heroic monkey, seizing a tree, rushed forward and struck the great elephant right in front of him.
Hit by Sugrīva’s blow, the great elephant withdrew a bow’s length, sat down, and let out a roar.
Quickly dismounting from the battered elephant, the valiant rākṣasa advanced toward his enemy, the monkey.
Taking up a bull-hide shield and a sword, swift in movement, he approached the steadfast Sugrīva, as if to threaten him.
Sugrīva, enraged, seized a massive stone and hurled it at Virūpākṣa, resembling a thundercloud.
Seeing the stone flying toward him, the foremost rākṣasa skillfully dodged and struck it with his sword.
Hit by the powerful sword blow from the rākṣasa, the monkey lay on the ground for a moment, as if unconscious.
Suddenly rising in that great battle, he clenched his fist and struck the rākṣasa’s chest with force.
Virūpākṣa, the night-wanderer, struck by the monkey’s fist, grew enraged and attacked Sugrīva at the front of the army with his sword.
He knocked down Sugrīva’s armor, and struck by his feet, Sugrīva fell; rising again, the monkey hurled it back at him.
The blow of Sugrīva’s palm, equal to the thunderbolt’s fierce sound, was raised against the rākṣasa.
Skillfully escaping, he struck the rākṣasa’s chest with his fist; then Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, became even more enraged.
Seeing that his own blow had been evaded by the rākṣasa, the monkey noticed an opening in Virūpākṣa’s defense.
Then, out of anger, he struck another mighty palm blow to Virūpākṣa’s jaw, like Indra’s thunderbolt, knocking him to the ground.
Virūpākṣa fell, drenched in blood, pouring forth crimson streams like water flowing from a mountain spring.
With his eyes wide open in anger, his mouth foaming and smeared with blood, they saw Virūpākṣa made even more hideous.
They saw the enemy, his body trembling and rolling on his side, soaked with blood, crying out piteously.
Thus, those two mighty ones, leaders of the monkeys and demons, engaged in battle, roaring like two dreadful oceans whose barriers have been broken.
Seeing that Virūpākṣa, of great strength and deformed eyes, destroyed by the monkey king, the combined army of monkeys and demons became like the swelling Ganges.
Let the ninety-seventh sarga be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa, sarga ninety-seven.
As their armies were swiftly being destroyed by each other in the great battle, they became like a lake in the intense heat of summer, nearly dried up.
By the slaughter of his own forces and the killing of Virūpākṣa, Rāvaṇa, lord of the demons, became doubly enraged.
Seeing his own army diminished and being slain by the foremost warriors, he felt pain in battle, witnessing the reversal of fate.
He then spoke to Mahodara, who was standing nearby: 'At this time, O mighty-armed one, my hope for victory rests with you.'
'Destroy the enemy's army, hero, and show your valor today. Now is the time to fulfill your duty to your master; fight well!'
Thus addressed, Mahodara, lord of the demons, replied, 'So be it,' and entered the enemy ranks like a moth into a flame.
Then, urged by his master's words and his own valor, the mighty Mahodara wrought a great slaughter among the monkeys.
And the great-souled monkeys, seizing massive rocks, entered the dreadful enemy ranks and struck down all the demons.
