रथाश्वनागाश्च हतास्तत्र तत्र सहस्रशः। रणे रामेण शूरेण हताश्चापि पदातयः
Chariots, horses, and elephants have been destroyed here and there by the thousands; and the brave Rāma has also slain foot soldiers in battle.
रुद्रो वा यदि वा विष्णुर्महेन्द्रो वा शतक्रतुः। हन्ति नो रामरूपेण यदि वा स्वयमन्तकः
Whether it is Rudra, or Viṣṇu, or mighty Indra with a hundred sacrifices, or even Death himself—someone is killing us, taking the form of Rāma.
हतप्रवीरा रामेण निराशा जीविते वयम्। अपश्यन्त्यो भयस्यान्तमनाथा विलपामहे
With our champions slain by Rāma, we are hopeless of life; seeing no end to our fear, bereft of protectors, we lament.
रामहस्ताद् दशग्रीवः शूरो दत्तमहावरः। इदं भयं महाघोरं समुत्पन्नं न बुद्ध्यते
The valiant Rāvaṇa, granted great boons, does not perceive this terrible and dreadful danger that has arisen from Rāma’s hand.
तं न देवा न गन्धर्वा न पिशाचा न राक्षसाः। उपसृष्टं परित्रातुं शक्ता रामेण संयुगे
Neither gods, nor gandharvas, nor piśācas, nor rākṣasas are able to rescue one attacked by Rāma in battle.
उत्पाताश्चापि दृश्यन्ते रावणस्य रणे रणे। कथयन्ति हि रामेण रावणस्य निबर्हणम्
Omens are also seen in every battle of Rāvaṇa; indeed, people say that Rāma will bring about Rāvaṇa’s destruction.
पितामहेन प्रीतेन देवदानवराक्षसैः। रावणस्याभयं दत्तं मनुष्येभ्यो न याचितम्
By the pleased Grandsire, along with gods, dānavas, and rākṣasas, Rāvaṇa was granted fearlessness—but he did not ask for it from men.
तदिदं मानुषं मन्ये प्राप्तं निःसंशयं भयम्। जीवितान्तकरं घोरं रक्षसां रावणस्य च
Therefore, I think this danger has surely come from a man—terrible, bringing the end of life for the rākṣasas and for Rāvaṇa.
पीड्यमानास्तु बलिना वरदानेन रक्षसा। दीप्तैस्तपोभिर्विबुधाः पितामहमपूजयन्
Oppressed by the powerful rākṣasa, who had obtained boons, the shining gods worshipped the Grandsire with intense austerities.
देवतानां हितार्थाय महात्मा वै पितामहः। उवाच देवतास्तुष्ट इदं सर्वा महद्वचः
For the welfare of the gods, the great-souled Grandsire, pleased, spoke these great words to all the gods.
अद्यप्रभृति लोकांस्त्रीन् सर्वे दानवराक्षसाः। भयेन प्रभृता नित्यं विचरिष्यन्ति शाश्वतम्
From this day forward, all dānavas and rākṣasas will forever wander the three worlds, always filled with fear.
दैवतैस्तु समागम्य सर्वैश्चेन्द्रपुरोगमैः। वृषध्वजस्त्रिपुरहा महादेवः प्रतोषितः
Having assembled with all the gods, led by Indra, the bull-bannered, city-destroying great god Śiva was satisfied.
प्रसन्नस्तु महादेवो देवानेतद् वचोऽब्रवीत्। उत्पत्स्यति हितार्थं वो नारी रक्षःक्षयावहा
The gracious great god spoke these words to the gods: ‘For your welfare, a woman will be born who will bring about the destruction of the rākṣasas.’
एषा देवैः प्रयुक्ता तु क्षुद् यथा दानवान् पुरा। भक्षयिष्यति नः सर्वान् राक्षसघ्नी सरावणान्
She, set in motion by the gods, will devour all of us rākṣasas, just as hunger once consumed the dānavas of old—she will be the slayer of rākṣasas, including Rāvaṇa.
रावणस्यापनीतेन दुर्विनीतस्य दुर्मतेः। अयं निष्टानको घोरः शोकेन समभिप्लुतः
Because of the misdeeds of wicked-minded Rāvaṇa, this dreadful, final wailing, overwhelmed by grief, has arisen.
तं न पश्यामहे लोके यो नः शरणदो भवेत्। राघवेणोपसृष्टानां कालेनेव युगक्षये
We do not see anyone in the world who can grant us refuge, beset by Rāghava, as if at the end of an age, overtaken by Time.
नास्ति नः शरणं किंचिद् भये महति तिष्ठताम्। दावाग्निवेष्टितानां हि करेणूनां यथा वने
There is no refuge for us, standing in this great terror, just as there is none for female elephants surrounded by a forest fire in the woods.
प्राप्तकालं कृतं तेन पौलस्त्येन महात्मना। यत एव भयं दृष्टं तमेव शरणं गतः
That great-souled descendant of Pulastya acted at the right time; seeing danger, he sought refuge in the very one from whom it arose.
इतीव सर्वा रजनीचरस्त्रियः परस्परं सम्परिरभ्य बाहुभिः। विषेदुरार्तातिभयाभिपीडिता विनेदुरुच्चैश्च तदा सुदारुणम्
Thus, all the night-dwelling women, embracing each other with their arms, were overcome with intense fear and distress, and then wailed loudly and terribly.

आर्तानां राक्षसीनां तु लङ्कायां वै कुले कुले। रावणः करुणं शब्दं शुश्राव परिदेवितम्
In every household of Lanka, Ravana heard the pitiful cries and lamentations of the grieving demon women.
स तु दीर्घं विनिःश्वस्य मुहूर्तं ध्यानमास्थितः। बभूव परमक्रुद्धो रावणो भीमदर्शनः
He sighed deeply, and after a moment of meditation, Ravana—terrifying in appearance—became exceedingly enraged.
संदश्य दशनैरोष्ठं क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः। राक्षसैरपि दुर्दर्शः कालाग्निरिव मूर्तिमान्
Biting his lip with his teeth, his eyes bloodshot with anger, he appeared like embodied death-fire, dreadful even to the demons.
उवाच च समीपस्थान् राक्षसान् राक्षसेश्वरः। क्रोधाव्यक्तकथस्तत्र निर्दहन्निव चक्षुषा
The lord of the demons, his speech choked with wrath and his gaze as if burning, addressed the nearby demons.
महोदरं महापार्श्वं विरूपाक्षं च राक्षसम्। शीघ्रं वदत सैन्यानि निर्यातेति ममाज्ञया
To Mahodara, Mahaparsva, and the demon Virupaksha, he said: 'Quickly command the armies to march forth at my order.'
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षसास्ते भयार्दिताः। चोदयामासुरव्यग्रान् राक्षसांस्तान् नृपाज्ञया
Hearing his words, those demons, seized by fear, hurriedly urged the other demons onward by the king's command.
ते तु सर्वे तथेत्युक्त्वा राक्षसा भीमदर्शनाः। कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः सर्वे ते रणाभिमुखा ययुः
All those dreadful-looking demons replied, 'So be it,' performed auspicious rites, and advanced toward the battle.
प्रतिपूज्य यथान्यायं रावणं ते महारथाः। तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे भर्तुर्विजयकाङ्क्षिणः
Having duly honored Ravana, all those great chariot-warriors stood with joined palms, desiring their master's victory.
ततोवाच प्रहस्यैतान् रावणः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। महोदरमहापार्श्वौ विरूपाक्षं च राक्षसम्
Then Ravana, his mind overcome by anger, laughed and spoke to Mahodara, Mahaparsva, and the demon Virupaksha.
अद्य बाणैर्धनुर्मुक्तैर्युगान्तादित्यसंनिभैः। राघवं लक्ष्मणं चैव नेष्यामि यमसादनम्
Today, with arrows released from my bow, blazing like the sun at the end of an age, I will send Rama and Lakshmana to the abode of Yama.
