Within one eighth of a day, Rama alone slew these shape-shifting Rakshasas with arrows blazing like tongues of fire.
Their horses slain, their chariots destroyed, their banners shattered and their ranks broken, the surviving night-stalkers fled into the city of Lanka.
With elephants, infantry, and horses slain, that battlefield became like a playground for the wrathful, great-souled Rudra.
Then the gods, along with the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and great sages, praised Rama's deed, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!'
Then Rama, the righteous one, spoke at once to Sugriva, to Vibhishana, and to Hanuman the monkey.
To Jambavan, the foremost of monkeys, and to Mainda and Dvivida as well, he said: 'This divine power of weapons is either mine or belongs to Tryambaka.'
Having destroyed that army of the Rakshasa king, Rama, equal to Indra and great-souled, free from fatigue in weapons and arms, was praised by the delighted hosts of gods.
Let the ninety-fourth sarga now be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Those thousands of elephants, horsemen with riders, and thousands of chariots with blazing banners—
Thousands of Rakshasas, wielding maces and iron clubs, adorned with golden banners, heroic and shape-shifting—
All these, deployed by Ravana, were struck down by Rama, the unwearied in action, with blazing arrows adorned with heated gold.
Seeing and hearing this, the surviving night-dwellers, agitated, gathered together with the demonesses, distressed and overwhelmed by anxiety.
The widowed, those whose sons were slain, and those bereft of kin, the demonesses, coming together in their grief, wailed in anguish.
How did the aged, fierce, sunken-bellied Śūrpaṇakhā encounter Rāma in the forest, who appeared like the god of love himself?
That woman, infamous in the world, lacking beauty and shameless, upon seeing him—gentle, of great strength, devoted to the welfare of all beings—
How did that ugly-faced demoness, devoid of all virtues, desire Rāma, who was handsome, virtuous, and possessed of great energy?
Because of her misfortune, with wrinkled skin and white hair, she did what was improper and laughable, condemned by all people.
For the destruction of the demons, and of Dūṣaṇa and Khara, she, unworthy as she was, provoked Rāghava’s wrath.
Because of that, this great enmity was created by Rāvaṇa; for Sītā’s abduction by the ten-headed demon was for her death.
But the ten-headed one does not obtain Sītā, the daughter of Janaka; instead, a powerful and unending enmity with Rāghava has been bound.
Seeing that demon Virādha, who desired Vaidehī, slain by Rāma alone, that should have been warning enough.
Fourteen thousand demons of terrible deeds were slain at Janasthāna by arrows blazing like tongues of fire.
Khara was slain in battle, as were Dūṣaṇa and Triśiras, by arrows shining like the sun; that should have been warning enough.
Kabandha, with arms a yojana long, who fed on blood, was also slain, roaring in anger; that should have been warning enough.
Rāma killed Vāli, son of the thousand-eyed Indra, mighty as Mount Meru; that should have been warning enough.
While dwelling on Ṛṣyamūka, Sugrīva, dejected and his hopes broken, was restored to his kingdom; that should have been warning enough.
The words spoken by Vibhīṣaṇa, filled with righteousness and benefit, for the good of all demons, were wise, but in his delusion, he did not accept them.
Had the younger brother of Kubera followed Vibhīṣaṇa’s advice, this Lanka, now a place of suffering and ruin, would not have become a cremation ground.
Hearing that mighty Kumbhakarṇa was slain by Rāghava, and that fierce Atikāya was killed by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāvaṇa did not realize that his beloved son Indrajit too was lost.
‘My son, my brother, my husband has been slain in battle’—such is the cry heard in every household of the rākṣasīs.
