मन्निमित्तमनार्येण समरेऽद्य निपातितौ। भैरवो हि महान् नादो राक्षसानां श्रुतो मया
'For my sake, have been struck down in battle by this ignoble one today; for I have heard a terrible, great sound from the Rākṣasas.'
बहूनामिह हृष्टानां तथा विक्रोशतां प्रियम्। अहो धिङ्मन्निमित्तोऽयं विनाशो राजपुत्रयोः
'From many here, exulting and crying out in joy; alas, this destruction of the royal princes is because of me.'
अथवा पुत्रशोकेन अहत्वा रामलक्ष्मणौ। विधमिष्यति मां रौद्रो राक्षसः पापनिश्चयः
'Or else, tormented by grief for his sons, without having killed Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, this fierce Rākṣasa, intent on evil, will slay me.'
हनूमतस्तु तद् वाक्यं न कृतं क्षुद्रया मया। यद्यहं तस्य पृष्ठेन तदायासमनिर्जिता
'But Hanumān's advice was not followed by me, wretched as I am; if I had mounted his back, I would not have suffered this distress.'
नाद्यैवमनुशोचेयं भर्तुरङ्कगता सती। मन्ये तु हृदयं तस्याः कौसल्यायाः फलिष्यति
'I would not now be lamenting thus, seated on my husband's lap; but I think the heart of Kausalyā will bear fruit.'
एकपुत्रा यदा पुत्रं विनष्टं श्रोष्यते युधि। सा हि जन्म च बाल्यं च यौवनं च महात्मनः
'When she, having only one son, hears that her son has perished in battle, she will recall, weeping, his birth, childhood, and youth, that great-souled one.'
धर्मकार्याणि रूपं च रुदती संस्मरिष्यति। निराशा निहते पुत्रे दत्त्वा श्राद्धमचेतना
'She will remember his righteous deeds and his form, weeping; bereft of hope, with her son slain, having offered the funeral rites, she will become insensible.'
अग्निमावेक्ष्यते नूनमपो वापि प्रवेक्ष्यति। धिगस्तु कुब्जामसतीं मन्थरां पापनिश्चयाम्
Surely she will look to enter the fire or plunge into water; shame on that hunchbacked, unfaithful Manthara, whose mind is set on evil.
यन्निमित्तमिमं शोकं कौसल्या प्रतिपत्स्यते। इत्येवं मैथिलीं दृष्ट्वा विलपन्तीं तपस्विनीम्
Because of whom Kausalya will suffer this grief—thus, seeing Maithili, the ascetic, lamenting in this way—
रोहिणीमिव चन्द्रेण बिना ग्रहवशं गताम्। एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तस्य अमात्यः शीलवान् शुचिः
Like Rohini, seized by a planet, left without the moon—at that moment, his virtuous and pure-minded minister,
सुपार्श्वो नाम मेधावी रावणं रक्षसां वरम्। निवार्यमाणः सचिवैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Supārśva by name, wise and learned, addressed Ravana, the foremost among the rakshasas, though being restrained by his counselors, with these words:
कथं नाम दशग्रीव साक्षाद्वैश्रवणानुज। हन्तुमिच्छसि वैदेहीं क्रोधाद् धर्ममपास्य च
How is it, O Ten-Headed One, brother of Vaiśravaṇa, that you wish to kill Vaidehī in anger, abandoning righteousness?
वेदविद्याव्रतस्नातः स्वकर्मनिरतस्तथा। स्त्रियः कस्माद् वधं वीर मन्यसे राक्षसेश्वर
You are versed in the Vedas, devoted to vows and your own duties—why, O lord of the rakshasas, do you consider the killing of a woman?
मैथिलीं रूपसम्पन्नां प्रत्यवेक्षस्व पार्थिव। तस्मिन्नेव सहास्माभिराहवे क्रोधमुत्सृज
Look upon Maithili, endowed with beauty, O king; let us, together with you, face her in battle—set aside your anger.
अभ्युत्थानं त्वमद्यैव कृष्णपक्षचतुर्दशी। कृत्वा निर्याह्यमावास्यां विजयाय बलैर्वृतः
Today, on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, rise up; on the new moon, go forth surrounded by your forces for victory.
शूरो धीमान् रथी खड्गी रथप्रवरमास्थितः। हत्वा दाशरथिं रामं भवान् प्राप्स्यति मैथिलीम्
Brave, wise, a charioteer, sword in hand, mounted on the finest chariot—having slain Rāma, son of Daśaratha, you will obtain Maithili.
स तद् दुरात्मा सुहृदा निवेदितं वचः सुधर्म्यं प्रतिगृह्य रावणः। गृहं जगामाथ ततश्च वीर्यवान् पुनः सभां च प्रययौ सुहृद्वृतः
That wicked-minded one, Ravana, having accepted the well-intentioned words spoken by his friend, went to his house, and then, full of strength, again entered the assembly, surrounded by his companions.

Hear now the ninety-third sarga.
स प्रविश्य सभां राजा दीनः परमदुःखितः। निषसादासने मुख्ये सिंहः क्रुद्ध इव श्वसन्
Entering the assembly, the king, dejected and deeply distressed, sat down on the chief seat, like a lion breathing heavily in anger.
अब्रवीच्च स तान् सर्वान् बलमुख्यान् महाबलः। रावणः प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं पुत्रव्यसनकर्शितः
Then that mighty Ravana, tormented by his son's misfortune, spoke with joined palms to all the chief warriors:
सर्वे भवन्तः सर्वेण हस्त्यश्वेन समावृताः। निर्यान्तु रथसङ्घैश्च पादातैश्चोपशोभिताः
Let all of you, fully arrayed with elephants and horses, set out, adorned with chariots and foot soldiers.
एकं रामं परिक्षिप्य समरे हन्तुमर्हथ। वर्षन्तः शरवर्षाणि प्रावृट्काल इवाम्बुदाः
Surround Rāma alone in battle and slay him, pouring down showers of arrows like clouds in the rainy season.
अथवाहं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भिन्नगात्रं महाहवे। भवद्भिः श्वो निहन्तास्मि रामं लोकस्य पश्यतः
Or else, tomorrow, before all the world, I myself will slay Rāma in the great battle with sharp arrows, even if my body is wounded by you.
इत्येतद् वाक्यमादाय राक्षसेन्द्रस्य राक्षसाः। निर्ययुस्ते रथैः शीघ्रैर्नानानीकैश्च संयुताः
Having received these words from the lord of the rakshasas, the rakshasas went out swiftly in chariots, equipped with various divisions.
परिघान् पट्टिशांश्चैव शरखड्गपरश्वधान्। शरीरान्तकरान् सर्वे चिक्षिपुर्वानरान् प्रति
All of them hurled iron clubs, spears, arrows, swords, and axes—deadly weapons—at the vanaras.
वानराश्च द्रुमान् शैलान् राक्षसान् प्रति चिक्षिपुः। स संग्रामो महाभीमः सूर्यस्योदयनं प्रति
The monkeys hurled trees and rocks at the rākṣasas; that battle became exceedingly terrifying as the sun was about to rise.
रक्षसां वानराणां च तुमुलः समपद्यत। ते गदाभिश्च चित्राभिः प्रासैः खड्गैः परश्वधैः
A tumultuous clash arose between the rākṣasas and the monkeys; they struck each other with varied maces, spears, swords, and axes.
अन्योन्यं समरे जघ्नुस्तदा वानरराक्षसाः। एवं प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे ह्यद्भुतं सुमहद्रजः
Then, in that battle, monkeys and rākṣasas struck one another; as the fight raged on, a wondrous and immense dust arose.
रक्षसां वानराणां च शान्तं शोणितविस्रवैः। मातंगरथकूलाश्च शरमत्स्या ध्वजद्रुमाः
The blood that flowed from the rākṣasas and monkeys subdued the dust; elephants and chariots lay scattered, with arrows like fish and banners like trees.
शरीरसंघाटवहाः प्रसस्रुः शोणितापगाः। ततस्ते वानराः सर्वे शोणितौघपरिप्लुताः
Rivers of blood, carrying heaps of bodies, flowed forth; then all the monkeys were drenched in torrents of blood.
