With that, the wondrous Varuna weapon was countered; then, Indrajit, the mighty and victorious in battle, enraged, fitted the blazing Agneya weapon, as if to consume the world.
That hero Lakshmana repelled that weapon of Shakra with his own missile; seeing his weapon checked, Ravana's son was overcome with rage.
He took up a sharp, demonic arrow, destructive to enemies; from his bow issued forth blazing, barbed, and serrated shafts.
Spears, maces, clubs, swords, and axes appeared; seeing that dreadful demonic weapon in battle, Lakshmana—undaunted—
—that weapon, irresistible to all beings and rending all arms—was countered by the radiant Lakshmana with a missile of Maheshvara.
Between the two, there arose a wondrous and hair-raising battle; the beings in the sky surrounded Lakshmana.
In that terrifying battle of monkeys and rakshasas, resounding with dreadful cries, the sky was filled with many astonished spirits.
Sages, ancestors, gods, gandharvas, garudas, and serpents, led by Indra, protected Lakshmana in the battle.
Then the younger brother of Raghava fitted another supreme arrow, equal in touch to fire, meant to destroy Ravana's son.
That hero took an arrow with perfect feathers, well-formed joints, firmly set, adorned with gold, and deadly to the body.
Unstoppable, unbearable, terrifying to rakshasas, likened to the venom of a serpent, and honored by hosts of gods.
With this, mighty Indra once conquered the danavas in the ancient battle between gods and demons, he who rides the celestial elephant.
Then Saumitri drew the Indra-missile, undefeated in battle, the best of arrows on the best of bows, and spoke these words:
If Rama, son of Dasharatha, is endowed with virtue, truth, and righteousness, and if he is unmatched in valor, then, O arrow, strike down Ravana's son.
Having spoken thus, the heroic Lakshmana drew back the straight-flying arrow to his ear in battle, and, joining it with the Indra-missile, released it at Indrajit, the destroyer of enemy heroes.
That arrow, adorned with a helmet and shining earrings, struck and severed Indrajit's head from his body, casting it to the ground.
The great head of the rakshasa prince, with its shoulder sundered and gleaming like gold, was seen on the earth, drenched in blood.
Thus slain, Ravana's son fell to the ground, armored, helmeted, his bow and arrows cast aside.
Then all the monkeys, along with Vibhishana, shouted in joy; the gods rejoiced at his death as they had at the slaying of Vritra.
Then, in the sky, a victorious shout arose among the gods, the great sages, and even the Gandharvas and Apsaras.
Recognizing that their mighty army had fallen, the Rakshasi host, being struck down by the monkeys who had conquered their pride, fled in all directions.
Assailed by the monkeys, those Rakshasas abandoned their weapons and, their senses shattered, ran toward Lanka in panic.
Hundreds of Rakshasas, terrified, fled in all directions, leaving behind all their weapons—spears, swords, and axes.
Some, overwhelmed by fear and tormented by the monkeys, entered Lanka; some leapt into the ocean, while others took refuge on the mountains.
Seeing Indrajit slain and lying on the battlefield, not a single Rakshasa could be seen among the thousands.
Just as the rays do not remain when the sun has set, so too, when he fell, the Rakshasas scattered in all directions.
He, the mighty-armed, became like the sun with its rays extinguished, or like a fire gone out—his life departed.
When the son of the Rakshasa lord had fallen, the world, freed from pain and its enemy destroyed, became filled with joy.
The blessed Shakra, together with all the great sages, rejoiced when that sinful Rakshasa was slain.
In the sky, the sound of drums was heard among the gods, as the Apsaras danced and the great-souled Gandharvas joined in.
