अदृश्यत तयोस्तत्र युध्यतोः पाणिलाघवात्। चापवेगप्रयुक्तैश्च बाणजालैः समन्ततः
There, as those two fought, nothing could be seen due to the swiftness of their hands and the showers of arrows loosed from their bows all around.
अन्तरिक्षेऽभिसम्पन्ने न रूपाणि चकाशिरे। लक्ष्मणो रावणिं प्राप्य रावणिश्चापि लक्ष्मणम्
When they fought in the sky, their forms were not visible; Lakṣmaṇa reached Rāvaṇi, and Rāvaṇi likewise reached Lakṣmaṇa.
अव्यवस्था भवत्युग्रा ताभ्यामन्योन्यविग्रहे। ताभ्यामुभाभ्यां तरसा प्रसृष्टैर्विशिखैः शितैः
A fierce confusion arose as the two clashed; with sharp arrows swiftly released by both, the tumult intensified.
निरन्तरमिवाकाशं बभूव तमसा वृतम्। तैः पतद्भिश्च बहुभिस्तयोः शरशतैः शितैः
The sky seemed entirely covered in darkness, uninterrupted, by the many hundreds of sharp arrows falling from both.
दिशश्च प्रदिशश्चैव बभूवुः शरसंकुलाः। तमसा पिहितं सर्वमासीत् प्रतिभयं महत्
All directions and quarters became filled with arrows; everything was shrouded in darkness, and a great terror prevailed.
अस्तं गते सहस्रांशौ संवृते तमसा च वै। रुधिरौघा महानद्यः प्रावर्तन्त सहस्रशः
When the thousand-rayed sun had set and darkness had spread, torrents of blood, like great rivers, began to flow in thousands.
क्रव्यादा दारुणा वाग्भिश्चिक्षिपुर्भीमनिःस्वनान्। न तदानीं ववौ वायुर्न च जज्वाल पावकः
Fierce flesh-eaters uttered dreadful cries with terrifying voices; at that time, the wind did not blow, nor did fire burn.
स्वस्त्यस्तु लोकेभ्य इति जजल्पुस्ते महर्षयः। सम्पेतुश्चात्र संतप्ता गन्धर्वाः सह चारणैः
The great sages murmured, 'May there be well-being for the worlds,' and the distressed Gandharvas and Cāraṇas gathered there.
अथ राक्षससिंहस्य कृष्णान् कनकभूषणान्। शरैश्चतुर्भिः सौमित्रिर्विव्याध चतुरो हयान्
Then Saumitra (Lakṣmaṇa) struck with four arrows the four black, gold-adorned horses of the lion-like Rākṣasa.
ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन पीतेन निशितेन च। सम्पूर्णायतमुक्तेन सुपत्रेण सुवर्चसा
Then, with another arrow—yellow and sharp—fully drawn and released from the bow, fitted with excellent feathers and radiant in appearance,
महेन्द्राशनिकल्पेन सूतस्य विचरिष्यतः। स तेन बाणाशनिना तलशब्दानुनादिना
Resembling the thunderbolt of Indra, as the charioteer moved about, that arrow, like a thunderbolt, accompanied by the sound of striking,
लाघवाद् राघवः श्रीमान् शिरः कायादपाहरत्। स यन्तरि महातेजा हते मन्दोदरीसुतः
Rāghava, illustrious and swift, severed the head from the body. The mighty charioteer, Mandodarī's son, was slain.
स्वयं सारथ्यमकरोत् पुनश्च धनुरस्पृशत्। तदद्भुतमभूत् तत्र सारथ्यं पश्यतां युधि
He himself took up the reins and again touched his bow. That act of charioteering was wondrous to behold for those watching the battle.
हयेषु व्यग्रहस्तं तं विव्याध निशितैः शरैः। धनुष्यथ पुनर्व्यग्रं हयेषु मुमुचे शरान्
Lakṣmaṇa struck him, whose hands were busy with the horses, with sharp arrows. Then, as he was again occupied with the bow, he released arrows at the horses.
छिद्रेषु तेषु बाणौघैर्विचरन्तमभीतवत्। अर्दयामास समरे सौमित्रिः शीघ्रकृत्तमः
Saumitri, swift and skilled, harassed him in battle as he moved fearlessly among the gaps with showers of arrows.
निहतं सारथिं दृष्ट्वा समरे रावणात्मजः। प्रजहौ समरोद्धर्षं विषण्णः स बभूव ह
Seeing his charioteer slain in battle, Rāvaṇa's son lost his enthusiasm for combat and became dejected.
विषण्णवदनं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसं हरियूथपाः। ततः परमसंहृष्टा लक्ष्मणं चाभ्यपूजयन्
Observing the dejected face of the rākṣasa, the monkey chiefs became exceedingly joyful and honored Lakṣmaṇa.
ततः प्रमाथी रभसः शरभो गन्धमादनः। अमृष्यमाणाश्चत्वारश्चक्रुर्वेगं हरीश्वराः
Then Pramāthī, Rabhasa, Śarabha, and Gandhamādana, unable to endure, rushed forward with speed—the four monkey lords.
ते चास्य हयमुख्येषु तूर्णमुत्पत्य वानराः। चतुर्षु सुमहावीर्या निपेतुर्भीमविक्रमाः
Those monkeys, of immense strength and terrifying valor, swiftly leapt onto the foremost horses and fell upon the four.
तेषामधिष्ठितानां तैर्वानरैः पर्वतोपमैः। मुखेभ्यो रुधिरं व्यक्तं हयानां समवर्तत
With those mountain-like monkeys mounted upon them, blood visibly flowed from the mouths of the horses.
ते हया मथिता भग्ना व्यसवो धरणीं गताः। ते निहत्य हयांस्तस्य प्रमथ्य च महारथम्। पुनरुत्पत्य वेगेन तस्थुर्लक्ष्मणपार्श्वतः
Those horses, battered and broken, lost their lives and fell to the earth. Having slain the horses and crushed the great chariot, they again leapt swiftly to stand by Lakṣmaṇa's side.
स हताश्वादवप्लुत्य रथान्मथितसारथिः। शरवर्षेण सौमित्रिमभ्यधावत रावणिः
Leaping down from the chariot with its horses slain and charioteer destroyed, Rāvaṇa's son rushed at Saumitri, showering arrows.
ततो महेन्द्रप्रतिमः स लक्ष्मणः पदातिनं तं निहतैर्हयोत्तमैः। सृजन्तमाजौ निशितान् शरोत्तमान् भृशं तदा बाणगणैर्व्यदारयत्
Then Lakṣmaṇa, equal to Indra, with the best horses slain, tore apart the foot-soldier who was releasing sharp arrows in battle, with a multitude of arrows.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकोननवतितमः सर्गः
Thus ends the eighty-ninth sarga in the Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.

Standing on the ground with his horses slain, the mighty and radiant night-wanderer Indrajit blazed with fury.
तौ धन्विनौ जिघांसन्तावन्योन्यमिषुभिर्भृशम्। विजयेनाभिनिष्क्रान्तौ वने गजवृषाविव
The two archers, intent on killing each other, fiercely attacked with arrows, advancing for victory like two bull elephants in the forest.
निबर्हयन्तश्चान्योन्यं ते राक्षसवनौकसः। भर्तारं न जहुर्युद्धे सम्पतन्तस्ततस्ततः
Those dwellers of the demon forest, restraining one another, did not abandon their lord in battle, as they rushed forward again and again.
ततस्तान् राक्षसान् सर्वान् हर्षयन् रावणात्मजः। स्तुन्वानो हर्षमाणश्च इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Then the son of Ravana, delighting all those demons, spoke these words joyfully, praising them.
तमसा बहुलेनेमाः संसक्ताः सर्वतो दिशः। नेह विज्ञायते स्वो वा परो वा राक्षसोत्तमाः
These directions are all enveloped in thick darkness; here, neither friend nor foe can be distinguished, O best of demons.
