Seeing the Rākṣasa, son of Rāvaṇa, pale-faced, Vibhīṣaṇa spoke to Saumitri, who was engaged in battle.
I see omens concerning this son of Rāvaṇa; hasten, O mighty-armed one, for he is defeated—there is no doubt.
Then Saumitri, fitting arrows like deadly serpents, released those shafts upon him, like venomous snakes.
Struck by Lakṣmaṇa's arrows, whose touch was like Indra's thunderbolt, he was bewildered for a moment, all his senses disturbed.
Regaining his senses after a moment, his faculties restored, he saw the heroic son of Daśaratha standing on the battlefield; then, his eyes red with anger, he rushed at Saumitri.
Approaching him, he spoke again harsh words: 'Do you not remember my prowess in that first battle, when you and your brother were bound and lay struggling on the field?'
'Indeed, in that great battle, you two, along with your foremost warriors, were first struck down on the ground by arrows like thunderbolts and lightning, rendered unconscious.'
I think you have either lost your memory, or you clearly wish to go to the abode of Yama, since you desire to provoke me.
If you did not witness my prowess in the first battle, then today I shall show it to you; stand firm now, resolved.
Having spoken thus, he struck Lakṣmaṇa with seven arrows, and Hanuman with ten of the finest, sharp-edged shafts.
Then, with a hundred well-aimed arrows, the mighty one, doubly enraged by anger, pierced Vibhīṣaṇa.
Seeing that deed performed by Indrajit, Rāma’s younger brother then, disregarding it, laughed and spoke these words.
The foremost among men, Lakṣmaṇa, gathering fierce arrows, released them in battle at Rāvaṇa’s son, his face fearless and wrathful.
Warriors who enter the battlefield do not strike in this manner, O night-wanderer; your arrows are light and weak, and easy for me.
Nor do true heroes fight in battle as you do, eager for combat; thus speaking, the bowman showered arrows upon him.
His great golden armor, shattered by those arrows, was scattered upon the chariot floor like a net of stars from the sky.
Having shaken off his armor and wounded by arrows, Indrajit, the valiant hero, stood in battle like the sun at dawn.
Then, enraged, Rāvaṇa’s son pierced Lakṣmaṇa in battle with a thousand arrows, his valor terrifying.
The great divine armor of Lakṣmaṇa was shattered; having reciprocated their blows, the two subduers of enemies stood.
Both, breathing heavily, fought fiercely in battle, their bodies cut everywhere by arrows, covered in blood.
For a very long time, those two mighty ones, skilled in the deeds of war, struck each other with sharp arrows, striving for victory.
Covered with streams of arrows, their armor and banners cut, they poured forth warm blood like two springs.
Then, as they released a terrible rain of arrows with fierce sounds, it was like two dark storm clouds pouring in the sky.
A great length of time passed as the two fought, yet neither turned away from battle nor felt fatigue.
Both, the foremost among masters of weapons, repeatedly displayed their missiles, weaving arrows of various forms in the sky.
Both the man and the demon, free from faults and light of movement, performed a fierce and tumultuous display, remarkable and skillful at its end.
From each of them separately, a terrible sound of striking palms was heard, which caused trembling like the dreadful crash of thunder.
The noise of those two, intoxicated by battle, shone forth as they roared at each other, like the ominous rumbling of two storm clouds in the sky.
Both mighty and renowned, steadfast in the pursuit of victory, wounded by arrows with golden shafts, streamed blood.
Those arrows with golden feathers, fallen upon their bodies in battle, drenched in blood, slipped out and entered the earth.
