Hearing Vibhishana's words, Lakshmana, of auspicious marks, showered a rain of arrows upon the son of the king of the Rakshasas.
The bears and the monkeys, skilled in fighting with trees, together rushed upon that arrayed army.
And the Rakshasas, eager to destroy the monkey army, advanced in battle with sharp arrows, swords, spears, and tomaras.
Then a tumultuous clash arose between the monkeys and Rakshasas, resounding throughout Lanka with a great noise on all sides.
The sky was covered with various kinds of weapons, sharp arrows, trees, and fearsome mountain peaks that had been raised up.
The Rakshasas, with distorted faces and arms, hurled weapons at the monkey chiefs, creating immense terror.
Likewise, the monkeys struck and battered all the Rakshasas in battle with every kind of tree and mountain peak.
From the mighty-bodied and powerful leaders of the bears and monkeys, great fear arose among the Rakshasas as they fought.
Hearing that his own army was disheartened and oppressed by the enemies, the formidable one rose up, though his task was not yet accomplished.
Emerging from the darkness of the trees, filled with rage, Ravana's son mounted his ready and well-controlled chariot.
With a terrible bow and arrows, dark as a mass of black ointment, with blood-red mouth and eyes, he appeared dreadful, like Death himself.
As soon as they saw him standing on the chariot, that army of Rakshasas, fierce in speed and eager to fight Lakshmana, turned back.
At that moment, Hanuman, difficult to approach and resembling a mountain, the subduer of enemies, seized a great tree.
That monkey, like the fire of destruction, burned the army of Rakshasas in battle with many trees, rendering them senseless.
Seeing the son of the wind god swiftly laying waste, thousands of Rakshasas showered Hanuman with weapons.
Those armed with sharp spears attacked with spears, those wielding swords with swords, those holding lances with lances, and those with pattiśas with pattiśa weapons.
And with iron clubs, maces, beautiful javelins, hundreds of shataghnis, and iron mallets, they attacked as well.
The Rākṣasas, with terrible axes and maces, with fists like thunderbolts, and with palms resembling lightning,
having surrounded him on all sides, struck at him, who was like a mountain; but he, enraged, wrought great slaughter among them.
Indrajit saw the foremost of monkeys, Hanuman, unshaken and fearless, destroying his enemies, and resembling a mountain.
He said to his charioteer, 'Go to where that monkey is; if left unchecked, he will surely bring ruin to the Rākṣasas.'
Thus addressed, the charioteer drove to where Hanuman was, carrying the exceedingly formidable and unconquerable Indrajit on his chariot.
Then that fierce Rākṣasa, having approached, showered arrows, swords, spears, and axes upon the head of the monkey.
Hanuman, seizing those terrible weapons, overwhelmed by great wrath, spoke these words:
'Fight, if you are a hero, O evil-minded son of Rāvaṇa; having encountered the son of the wind, you will not return alive.'
'If you wish for single combat, fight with your arms; withstand my force, O foolish one, then you may be called the best among Rākṣasas.'
Vibhīṣaṇa, seeing Rāvaṇa's son, bow in hand and intent on killing Hanuman, spoke to Lakṣmaṇa.
'He who conquered Indra, born of Rāvaṇa himself, is now mounted on his chariot, seeking to slay Hanuman.'
'O Saumitri, strike down Rāvaṇa's son with your unmatched, enemy-repelling, and life-ending terrible arrows.'
Thus addressed by the noble Vibhīṣaṇa, destroyer of foes, Lakṣmaṇa saw that mighty, mountain-like, and formidable warrior standing on his chariot.
