He, it is said, has now reached Nikumbhilā with his army; if he completes his act, know that all of us are as good as slain.
If the enemy, not yet arrived at Nikumbhilā and not having performed the fire-rite, is slain by you, O foe of Indra, that will be his death.
A boon was granted, O mighty-armed one, by the Lord of all worlds; thus, O king, this is the prescribed way for the death of that wise one.
Order the mighty army for the destruction of Indrajit, O Rāma; know that with him slain, Rāvaṇa and his host of friends are also destroyed.
Hearing Vibhīṣaṇa's words, Rāma then spoke: I know the magic and true valor of that fierce one.
For he is skilled in the Brahmāstra, wise, master of great magic and great strength; in battle he renders even the gods with Varuṇa unconscious.
As he moves in the sky with his chariot, O hero of great fame, his course cannot be discerned, like the sun hidden in clouds.
But Rāghava, knowing the magical power and might of the wicked foe, spoke these words to Lakṣmaṇa, famed for his virtue.
O Lakṣmaṇa, surrounded by the entire force of the monkey king, and with the troop leaders headed by Hanūmat, go forth.
Surrounded by the army together with Jāmbavān, the lord of bears, slay that son of the Rākṣasa, endowed with magical power and strength.
This great-souled night-wanderer, well-versed in his magic, will follow you from behind together with his counselors.
Hearing Rāghava's words, Lakṣmaṇa, together with Vibhīṣaṇa, who was mighty in valor, took up another excellent bow.
Fully armored, sword at his side, quiver at his back, and holding his bow in his left hand, Saumitri, delighted, touched Rāma's feet and spoke.
Today, arrows released from my bow will pierce Rāvaṇa's son and descend upon Laṅkā like swans upon a lotus pond.
Today itself, my arrows, loosed from the great bowstring, will penetrate and destroy the body of that fierce one.
Having spoken thus, the radiant Lakṣmaṇa, eager to slay Rāvaṇa's son, swiftly went forth before his brother.
Saluting his teacher's feet and walking around him reverently, he proceeded toward Nikumbhilā, the shrine guarded by Rāvaṇa's son.
Accompanied by Vibhīṣaṇa, the valiant prince, Lakṣmaṇa, having received his brother's blessings, went forth swiftly.
Surrounded by thousands of monkeys with Hanumān at their head, and with Vibhīṣaṇa and his ministers, Lakṣmaṇa advanced quickly.
Encircled by the great army of monkeys moving with speed, he saw on the way the force of the king of bears stationed there.
Having traveled a long distance, Saumitri, the joy of his friends, saw from afar the army of the lord of the rākṣasas drawn up in battle array.
Arriving there, bow in hand, the subduer of enemies, Raghunandana, stood according to the ordinance of Brahmā, ready to conquer by means of his skill.
Accompanied by Vibhīṣaṇa, the valiant prince, and also by the heroic Aṅgada and the son of the wind-god, he stood firm.
He entered that dense, banner-filled, impenetrable army, shining with spotless weapons and mighty chariots, most terrifying and of immeasurable speed, like darkness to his enemies.
The eighty-sixth sarga is recited here in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa, sarga eighty-six.
Then, in that situation, Rāvaṇa's younger brother spoke to Lakṣmaṇa words that were beneficial and effective against the enemy.
Behold this army of rākṣasas, dark as rain clouds; let it be swiftly attacked by the monkeys with their stone weapons.
When you break through this great army, Lakṣmaṇa, the son of the rākṣasa king will also be seen here once the formation is breached.
Therefore, shower the enemies with arrows like Indra's thunderbolts and charge quickly, so that this task is not left unfinished.
O hero, strike down that wicked one, the master of illusion and unrighteousness, Ravana's son, cruel in his deeds and a terror to all the worlds.
