त्यजैनं नरशार्दूल मिथ्या संतापमागतम्। सीदते हि बलं सर्वं दृष्ट्वा त्वां शोककर्शितम्
O tiger among men, abandon this false grief that has come upon you; for all the strength is failing, seeing you consumed by sorrow.
इह त्वं स्वस्थहृदयस्तिष्ठ सत्त्वसमुच्छ्रितः। लक्ष्मणं प्रेषयास्माभिः सह सैन्यानुकर्षिभिः
Here, remain with a tranquil heart, exalted in spirit; let us send Lakṣmaṇa with those who lead the army.
एष तं नरशार्दूलो रावणिं निशितैः शरैः। त्याजयिष्यति तत्कर्म ततो वध्यो भविष्यति
This tiger among men will drive away that Rāvaṇa's son with sharp arrows; after that deed, he will become fit for death.
तस्यैते निशितास्तीक्ष्णाः पत्रिपत्राङ्गवाजिनः। पतत्त्रिण इवासौम्याः शराः पास्यन्ति शोणितम्
These sharp, keen arrows, with feathered shafts and swift bodies, gentle as birds, will drink his blood.
तत् संदिश महाबाहो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम्। राक्षसस्य विनाशाय वज्रं वज्रधरो यथा
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, instruct Lakṣmaṇa, of auspicious marks, for the destruction of the demon, as Indra wields the thunderbolt.
मनुजवर न कालविप्रकर्षो रिपुनिधनं प्रति यत्क्षमोऽद्य कर्तुम्। त्वमतिसृज रिपोर्वधाय वज्रं दिविजरिपोर्मथने यथा महेन्द्रः
O best of men, there is no delay of time in the destruction of the enemy; today you are able to accomplish it. Release the thunderbolt for the slaying of the foe, as Mahendra did in crushing the enemy of the gods.
समाप्तकर्मा हि स राक्षसर्षभो भवत्यदृश्यः समरे सुरासुरैः। युयुत्सता तेन समाप्तकर्मणा भवेत् सुराणामपि संशयो महान्
For when his ritual is completed, that foremost of demons becomes invisible in battle to gods and demons; when one fights with him after the completion of his ritual, even the gods would have great doubt.

The eighty-fifth chapter is to be heard.
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा राघवः शोककर्शितः। नोपधारयते व्यक्तं यदुक्तं तेन रक्षसा
Hearing those words, Rāghava, afflicted by grief, could not clearly comprehend what was spoken by that demon.
ततो धैर्यमवष्टभ्य रामः परपुरंजयः। विभीषणमुपासीनमुवाच कपिसंनिधौ
Then, having seized courage, Rāma, conqueror of enemy cities, spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa, who was seated among the monkeys.
नैर्ऋताधिपते वाक्यं यदुक्तं ते विभीषण। भूयस्तच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि ब्रूहि यत्ते विवक्षितम्
O lord of the night-demons, the words you have spoken, Vibhīṣaṇa, I wish to hear again; speak what you intend to say.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः। यत् तत् पुनरिदं वाक्यं बभाषेऽथ विभीषणः
Hearing Rāghava's words, the eloquent speaker then spoke these words again, Vibhīṣaṇa.
यथाऽऽज्ञप्तं महाबाहो त्वया गुल्मनिवेशनम्। तत् तथानुष्ठितं वीर त्वद्वाक्यसमनन्तरम्
As you commanded, O mighty-armed one, the arrangement of the troops was carried out just as you instructed, O hero, immediately after your words.
तान्यनीकानि सर्वाणि विभक्तानि समन्ततः। विन्यस्ता यूथपाश्चैव यथान्यायं विभागशः
All those armies have been arrayed on every side, and the leaders of the troops have been stationed in their proper divisions according to rule.
भूयस्तु मम विज्ञाप्यं तच्छृणुष्व महाप्रभो। त्वय्यकारणसंतप्ते संतप्तहृदया वयम्
But, O great lord, I have something further to inform you; listen to this: as you are afflicted for a reason, our hearts too are troubled.
त्यज राजन्निमं शोकं मिथ्या संतापमागतम्। यदियं त्यज्यतां चिन्ता शत्रुहर्षविवर्धिनी
O king, abandon this sorrow and the needless distress that has arisen; let go of this anxiety, which only increases the joy of the enemy.
उद्यमः क्रियतां वीर हर्षः समुपसेव्यताम्। प्राप्तव्या यदि ते सीता हन्तव्याश्च निशाचराः
Let effort be made, O hero, and let courage be embraced; if Sītā is to be regained by you, and the night-dwellers are to be slain.
रघुनन्दन वक्ष्यामि श्रूयतां मे हितं वचः। साध्वयं यातु सौमित्रिर्बलेन महता वृतः
O descendant of Raghu, I will speak; listen to my beneficial words: let Saumitri go, well-supported by a great force.
निकुम्भिलायां सम्प्राप्तं हन्तुं रावणिमाहवे। धनुर्मण्डलनिर्मुक्तैराशीविषविषोपमैः
Let him, having reached Nikumbhilā, slay Rāvaṇa's son in battle with arrows released from the bow, whose venom rivals that of deadly serpents.
शरैर्हन्तुं महेष्वासो रावणिं समितिंजयः। तेन वीरेण तपसा वरदानात् स्वयंभुवः। अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरः प्राप्तं कामगाश्च तुरङ्गमाः
That great archer, conqueror in battle, should slay Rāvaṇa's son with arrows; for that hero, by asceticism and the boon of the Self-born, has obtained the Brahmaśiras weapon and horses that move at will.
स एष किल सैन्येन प्राप्तः किल निकुम्भिलाम्। यद्युत्तिष्ठेत् कृतं कर्म हतान् सर्वांश्च विद्धि नः
He, it is said, has now reached Nikumbhilā with his army; if he completes his act, know that all of us are as good as slain.
निकुम्भिलामसम्प्राप्तमकृताग्निं च यो रिपुः। त्वामाततायिनं हन्यादिन्द्रशत्रो स ते वधः
If the enemy, not yet arrived at Nikumbhilā and not having performed the fire-rite, is slain by you, O foe of Indra, that will be his death.
वरो दत्तो महाबाहो सर्वलोकेश्वरेण वै। इत्येवं विहितो राजन् वधस्तस्यैष धीमतः
A boon was granted, O mighty-armed one, by the Lord of all worlds; thus, O king, this is the prescribed way for the death of that wise one.
वधायेन्द्रजितो राम संदिशस्व महाबलम्। हते तस्मिन् हतं विद्धि रावणं ससुहृद्गणम्
Order the mighty army for the destruction of Indrajit, O Rāma; know that with him slain, Rāvaṇa and his host of friends are also destroyed.
विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा रामो वाक्यमथाब्रवीत्। जानामि तस्य रौद्रस्य मायां सत्यपराक्रम
Hearing Vibhīṣaṇa's words, Rāma then spoke: I know the magic and true valor of that fierce one.
स हि ब्रह्मास्त्रवित् प्राज्ञो महामायो महाबलः। करोत्यसंज्ञान् संग्रामे देवान् सवरुणानपि
For he is skilled in the Brahmāstra, wise, master of great magic and great strength; in battle he renders even the gods with Varuṇa unconscious.
तस्यान्तरिक्षे चरतः सरथस्य महायशः। न गतिर्ज्ञायते वीर सूर्यस्येवाभ्रसम्प्लवे
As he moves in the sky with his chariot, O hero of great fame, his course cannot be discerned, like the sun hidden in clouds.
राघवस्तु रिपोर्ज्ञात्वा मायावीर्यं दुरात्मनः। लक्ष्मणं कीर्तिसम्पन्नमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
But Rāghava, knowing the magical power and might of the wicked foe, spoke these words to Lakṣmaṇa, famed for his virtue.
यद् वानरेन्द्रस्य बलं तेन सर्वेण संवृतः। हनूमत्प्रमुखैश्चैव यूथपैः सह लक्ष्मण
O Lakṣmaṇa, surrounded by the entire force of the monkey king, and with the troop leaders headed by Hanūmat, go forth.
जाम्बवेनर्क्षपतिना सह सैन्येन संवृतः। जहि तं राक्षससुतं मायाबलसमन्वितम्
Surrounded by the army together with Jāmbavān, the lord of bears, slay that son of the Rākṣasa, endowed with magical power and strength.
