तदद्य विपुलं वीर दुःखमिन्द्रजिता कृतम्। कर्मणा व्यपनेष्यामि तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ राघव
Therefore, O hero, today I will remove the great suffering caused by Indrajit through my actions; so rise up, O Rāghava.
उत्तिष्ठ नरशार्दूल दीर्घबाहो धृतव्रत। किमात्मानं महात्मानमात्मानं नावबुध्यसे
Rise up, O tiger among men, long-armed and firm in your vows! Why do you, the great-souled one, not recognize your own self?
अयमनघ तवोदितः प्रियार्थं जनकसुतानिधनं निरीक्ष्य रुष्टः। सरथगजहयां सराक्षसेन्द्रां भृशमिषुभिर्विनिपातयामि लङ्काम्
O faultless one, for your sake, seeing the death of Janaka’s daughter, I am enraged; I will strike down Lanka, with its chariots, elephants, horses, and all the lord of demons, with a shower of arrows.

Hear now the eighty-fourth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
राममाश्वासमाने तु लक्ष्मणे भ्रातृवत्सले। निक्षिप्य गुल्मान् स्वस्थाने तत्रागच्छद् विभीषणः
While Lakṣmaṇa, devoted to his brother, was consoling Rāma, Vibhīṣaṇa came there, having stationed the battalions in their proper places.
नानाप्रहरणैर्वीरैश्चतुर्भिरभिसंवृतः। नीलाञ्जनचयाकारैर्मातंगैरिव यूथपैः
He was accompanied by four heroic warriors, armed with various weapons, resembling leaders of elephant herds, dark as clouds of collyrium.
सोऽभिगम्य महात्मानं राघवं शोकलालसम्। वानरांश्चापि ददृशे बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणान्
Approaching the great-souled Rāghava, who was overwhelmed with grief, he also saw the monkeys, their eyes filled with tears.
राघवं च महात्मानमिक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनम्। ददर्श मोहमापन्नं लक्ष्मणस्याङ्कमाश्रितम्
He saw the great-souled Rāghava, delight of the Ikṣvāku line, fallen into delusion, resting on Lakṣmaṇa’s lap.
व्रीडितं शोकसंतप्तं दृष्ट्वा रामं विभीषणः। अन्तर्दुःखेन दीनात्मा किमेतदिति सोऽब्रवीत्
Seeing Rāma, ashamed and tormented by grief, Vibhīṣaṇa, his heart afflicted with inner sorrow, said, 'What is this?'
विभीषणमुखं दृष्ट्वा सुग्रीवं तांश्च वानरान्। लक्ष्मणोवाच मन्दार्थमिदं बाष्पपरिप्लुतः
Seeing Vibhīṣaṇa’s face, Sugrīva, and those monkeys, Lakṣmaṇa, his voice choked with tears, spoke these words with difficulty.
हता इन्द्रजिता सीता इति श्रुत्वैव राघवः। हनूमद्वचनात् सौम्य ततो मोहमुपाश्रितः
When Rāghava heard from Hanumān that Sītā had been slain by Indrajit, gentle one, he then fell into a swoon.
कथयन्तं तु सौमित्रिं संनिवार्य विभीषणः। पुष्कलार्थमिदं वाक्यं विसंज्ञं राममब्रवीत्
As Saumitri was speaking, Vibhīṣaṇa stopped him and spoke these weighty words to the unconscious Rāma.
मनुजेन्द्रार्तरूपेण यदुक्तस्त्वं हनूमता। तदयुक्तमहं मन्ये सागरस्येव शोषणम्
What Hanumān told you, appearing as a man in distress, I consider unfitting—like the drying up of the ocean.
अभिप्रायं तु जानामि रावणस्य दुरात्मनः। सीतां प्रति महाबाहो न च घातं करिष्यति
But I know the intention of the evil-minded Rāvaṇa regarding Sītā, O mighty-armed one; he will not kill her.
याच्यमानः सुबहुशो मया हितचिकीर्षुणा। वैदेहीमुत्सृजस्वेति न च तत् कृतवान् वचः
Though I, wishing your welfare, have repeatedly pleaded with him to release Vaidehī, he did not heed my words.
नैव साम्ना न दानेन न भेदेन कुतो युधा। सा द्रष्टुमपि शक्येत नैव चान्येन केनचित्
Neither by conciliation, nor by gifts, nor by division, nor certainly by battle, could she even be seen by anyone else.
वानरान् मोहयित्वा तु प्रतियातः स राक्षसः। मायामयीं महाबाहो तां विद्धि जनकात्मजाम्
That demon, having bewildered the monkeys, departed; know that mighty-armed one to be the daughter of Janaka, fashioned by illusion.
चैत्यं निकुम्भिलामद्य प्राप्य होमं करिष्यति। हुतवानुपयातो हि देवैरपि सवासवैः
Today, having reached the shrine at Nikumbhilā, he will perform a sacrifice; for having offered oblations, he has come, even with the gods and Vasava.
दुराधर्षो भवत्येष संग्रामे रावणात्मजः। तेन मोहयता नूनमेषा माया प्रयोजिता
This son of Rāvaṇa becomes unconquerable in battle; surely, by his act of delusion, this illusion has been employed.
विघ्नमन्विच्छता तत्र वानराणां पराक्रमे। ससैन्यास्तत्र गच्छामो यावत्तन्न समाप्यते
Seeking to hinder the valor of the monkeys there, let us go with our army until that is completed.
त्यजैनं नरशार्दूल मिथ्या संतापमागतम्। सीदते हि बलं सर्वं दृष्ट्वा त्वां शोककर्शितम्
O tiger among men, abandon this false grief that has come upon you; for all the strength is failing, seeing you consumed by sorrow.
इह त्वं स्वस्थहृदयस्तिष्ठ सत्त्वसमुच्छ्रितः। लक्ष्मणं प्रेषयास्माभिः सह सैन्यानुकर्षिभिः
Here, remain with a tranquil heart, exalted in spirit; let us send Lakṣmaṇa with those who lead the army.
एष तं नरशार्दूलो रावणिं निशितैः शरैः। त्याजयिष्यति तत्कर्म ततो वध्यो भविष्यति
This tiger among men will drive away that Rāvaṇa's son with sharp arrows; after that deed, he will become fit for death.
तस्यैते निशितास्तीक्ष्णाः पत्रिपत्राङ्गवाजिनः। पतत्त्रिण इवासौम्याः शराः पास्यन्ति शोणितम्
These sharp, keen arrows, with feathered shafts and swift bodies, gentle as birds, will drink his blood.
तत् संदिश महाबाहो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम्। राक्षसस्य विनाशाय वज्रं वज्रधरो यथा
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, instruct Lakṣmaṇa, of auspicious marks, for the destruction of the demon, as Indra wields the thunderbolt.
मनुजवर न कालविप्रकर्षो रिपुनिधनं प्रति यत्क्षमोऽद्य कर्तुम्। त्वमतिसृज रिपोर्वधाय वज्रं दिविजरिपोर्मथने यथा महेन्द्रः
O best of men, there is no delay of time in the destruction of the enemy; today you are able to accomplish it. Release the thunderbolt for the slaying of the foe, as Mahendra did in crushing the enemy of the gods.
समाप्तकर्मा हि स राक्षसर्षभो भवत्यदृश्यः समरे सुरासुरैः। युयुत्सता तेन समाप्तकर्मणा भवेत् सुराणामपि संशयो महान्
For when his ritual is completed, that foremost of demons becomes invisible in battle to gods and demons; when one fights with him after the completion of his ritual, even the gods would have great doubt.

तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा राघवः शोककर्शितः। नोपधारयते व्यक्तं यदुक्तं तेन रक्षसा
Hearing those words, Rāghava, afflicted by grief, could not clearly comprehend what was spoken by that demon.
ततो धैर्यमवष्टभ्य रामः परपुरंजयः। विभीषणमुपासीनमुवाच कपिसंनिधौ
Then, having seized courage, Rāma, conqueror of enemy cities, spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa, who was seated among the monkeys.
