That rock, missing Indrajit who stood in the chariot with his charioteer, struck the earth after piercing it, its effort wasted.
When the rock fell, the army of rākṣasas was shaken; as it crashed down, many rākṣasas were greatly crushed.
Then hundreds of forest-dwelling monkeys, roaring, charged at him, brandishing trees and mountain peaks.
In the battle, the mighty and terrifying monkeys hurled trees, mountains, and a great rain of missiles at Indrajit.
They slaughtered the enemies and roared with various sounds; those dreadful night-dwellers were struck by those fierce monkeys.
Struck down by the monkeys' strength and their trees, the demons writhed on the battlefield; then Indrajit, seeing his army afflicted by the monkeys—
Seized his weapons in anger, turned toward the enemy, and, surrounded by his own troops, released volleys of arrows.
With firm valor, he struck down many tiger-like monkeys with spears, maces, swords, lances, and sharp spikes.
But the mighty monkeys also killed his followers in battle with strong branches, tree-trunks, mountains, and rocks.
Hanuman wrought destruction among the terrifying and mighty demons; restraining the opposing army, he spoke to the forest-dwellers.
Hanuman said: 'Withdraw! This force is not to be conquered by us, even if we give up our lives striving to fulfill Rama's wish.'
'For the sake of whom we fight, Sita, the daughter of Janaka, has been slain. Let us inform Rama and Sugriva of this matter.'
'Whatever they decide to do, we will carry out.' Having said this, the foremost of monkeys restrained all the monkeys.
Gradually, without panic, he withdrew with his army; then, seeing Hanuman going toward where Raghava was—
Desiring to perform a sacrifice, that wicked-souled one went to the Nikumbhila sanctuary; Indrajit, having reached Nikumbhila, began offering oblations into the fire.
Then, on the sacrificial ground, the fire kindled by that demon blazed forth as he poured offerings, consuming the blood of the sacrifice.
Enveloped in flames, the fire appeared, satisfied with the blood of the sacrifice, like the sun at dusk, a fierce fire arisen.
Then Indrajit, skilled in ritual, offered oblations according to the ordinance for the sake of the demon host; seeing this, the demons stood in great assemblies, versed in the rites of strategy and sacrifice.

Hear now the eighty-third sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Hearing the great tumult of battle from the demons and their followers, Rāghava spoke to Jāmbavān.
'Gentle one, surely Hanuman has performed a most difficult deed; for the dreadful, tremendous sound of weapons is heard.'
Go then, render assistance, surrounded by your own forces; swiftly join the battle where the lord of bears fights with the foremost of monkeys.
The king of bears, having replied, 'So be it,' set out, accompanied by his own army, and reached the western gate where Hanuman, the monkey, was.
Then the king of bears saw Hanuman approaching, surrounded by monkeys who had engaged in battle and were panting.
Seeing Hanuman on the path, and that bear force, vast as a dark blue cloud and terrible, Hanuman halted and turned back, restraining them.
He, of great fame, quickly approached with that army, and, distressed, spoke these words to Rama.
While we were fighting in battle and watching, Indrajit, son of Ravana, killed Sita as she wept.
My mind was thrown into turmoil upon seeing her, and I became despondent, O subduer of foes; therefore, I have come to inform you of what has happened.
Hearing those words, Rama, overwhelmed by grief, fell to the ground like a tree whose root has been cut.
Seeing Rama, who resembled a god, fallen on the ground, the foremost monkeys quickly gathered around him from all sides.
