तां दृष्ट्वा चारुसर्वाङ्गीं रामस्य महिषीं प्रियाम्। अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं क्रोधाद् रक्षोधिपात्मजम्
Beholding her, beautiful in every limb, the beloved queen of Rama, Hanuman spoke harsh words in anger to the son of the rakshasa king.
दुरात्मन्नात्मनाशाय केशपक्षे परामृशः। ब्रह्मर्षीणां कुले जातो राक्षसीं योनिमाश्रितः
Wicked one, you act for your own destruction, seizing her by the hair; though born in the lineage of Brahmarshis, you have embraced a rakshasa's nature.
धिक् त्वां पापसमाचारं यस्य ते मतिरीदृशी। नृशंसानार्य दुर्वृत्त क्षुद्र पापपराक्रम। अनार्यस्येदृशं कर्म घृणा ते नास्ति निर्घृण
Shame on you, evil-doer, whose mind is so depraved! Cruel, ignoble, vile, of wicked power—such an act befits the ignoble; you are utterly without compassion.
च्युता गृहाच्च राज्याच्च रामहस्ताच्च मैथिली। किं तवैषापराद्धा हि यदेनां हंसि निर्दय
Maithili has been cast out from her home, her kingdom, and from Rama's hand; what fault is hers, that you slay her so mercilessly?
सीतां हत्वा तु न चिरं जीविष्यसि कथंचन। वधार्ह कर्मणा तेन मम हस्तगतो ह्यसि
If you kill Sita, you will not live long by any means; by such a deed deserving death, you have now come into my grasp.
ये च स्त्रीघातिनां लोका लोकवध्यैश्च कुत्सिताः। इह जीवितमुत्सृज्य प्रेत्य तान् प्रति लप्स्यसे
Those worlds that are reviled for slayers of women and for the destroyers of people—you will reach them after abandoning your life here.
इति ब्रुवाणो हनुमान् सायुधैर्हरिभिर्वृतः। अभ्यधावत् सुसंक्रुद्धो राक्षसेन्द्रसुतं प्रति
Thus speaking, Hanuman, surrounded by armed monkeys, rushed in great fury toward the son of the rakshasa king.
आपतन्तं महावीर्यं तदनीकं वनौकसाम्। रक्षसां भीमकोपानामनीकेन न्यवारयत्
But a rakshasa, fierce with wrath, blocked that mighty, advancing host of forest-dwellers with his own army.
स तां बाणसहस्रेण विक्षोभ्य हरिवाहिनीम्। हनूमन्तं हरिश्रेष्ठमिन्द्रजित् प्रत्युवाच ह
Then Indrajit, having shaken the monkey forces with a thousand arrows, addressed Hanuman, the foremost of monkeys.
सुग्रीवस्त्वं च रामश्च यन्निमित्तमिहागताः। तां वधिष्यामि वैदेहीमद्यैव तव पश्यतः
Sugriva, Rama, and you have come here for her sake; today, before your eyes, I will slay Vaidehi.
इमां हत्वा ततो रामं लक्ष्मणं त्वां च वानर। सुग्रीवं च वधिष्यामि तं चानार्यं विभीषणम्
After killing her, I will then slay Rama, Lakshmana, you, O monkey, Sugriva, and that ignoble Vibhishana.
न हन्तव्याः स्त्रियश्चेति यद् ब्रवीषि प्लवंगम। पीडाकरममित्राणां यच्च कर्तव्यमेव तत्
You say, 'Women must not be killed,' O monkey; but whatever brings pain to enemies must indeed be done.
तमेवमुक्त्वा रुदतीं सीतां मायामयीं च ताम्। शितधारेण खड्गेन निजघानेन्द्रजित् स्वयम्
Having spoken thus, Indrajit himself struck down the weeping, illusory Sita with his sharp-edged sword.
यज्ञोपवीतमार्गेण छिन्ना तेन तपस्विनी। सा पृथिव्यां पृथुश्रोणी पपात प्रियदर्शना
By the path of her sacred thread, that ascetic woman was cut down; she, broad-hipped and lovely to behold, fell to the earth.
तामिन्द्रजित् स्त्रियं हत्वा हनूमन्तमुवाच ह। मया रामस्य पश्येमां प्रियां शस्त्रनिषूदिताम्। एषा विशस्ता वैदेही निष्फलो वः परिश्रमः
Having slain that woman, Indrajit said to Hanuman: 'See here Rama's beloved, struck down by my weapon; Vaidehi is slain—your efforts are in vain.'
ततः खड्गेन महता हत्वा तामिन्द्रजित्स्वयम्। हृष्टः स रथमास्थाय ननाद च महास्वनम्
Then Indrajit himself, with a great sword, struck her down; rejoicing, he mounted his chariot and roared with a mighty sound.
वानराः शुश्रुवुः शब्दमदूरे प्रत्यवस्थिताः। व्यादितास्यस्य नदतस्तद्दुर्गं संश्रितस्य तु
The monkeys, stationed not far away, heard the sound of his roaring, his mouth wide open as he took refuge in that stronghold.
तथा तु सीतां विनिहत्य दुर्मतिः प्रहृष्टचेताः स बभूव रावणिः। तं हृष्टरूपं समुदीक्ष्य वानरा विषण्णरूपाः समभिप्रदुद्रुवुः
Thus, after slaying Sita, that wicked-minded son of Ravana became exceedingly glad; seeing him in such a joyful state, the monkeys, filled with despair, fled in all directions.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकाशीतितमः सर्गः
Thus ends the eighty-first sarga in the Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the first epic.

Let the eighty-second sarga now be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
श्रुत्वा तु भीमनिर्ह्रादं शक्राशनिसमस्वनम्। वीक्ष्यमाणा दिशः सर्वा दुद्रुवुर्वानरा भृशम्
Hearing that terrible roar, like the thunder of Indra's bolt, the monkeys, looking in all directions, fled in great panic.
तानुवाच ततः सर्वान् हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। विषण्णवदनान् दीनांस्त्रस्तान् विद्रवतः पृथक्
Then Hanuman, the son of the wind, addressed all those monkeys, who were fleeing separately, their faces downcast, dejected and afraid.
कस्माद् विषण्णवदना विद्रवध्वं प्लवंगमाः। त्यक्तयुद्धसमुत्साहाः शूरत्वं क्व नु वो गतम्
Why are you fleeing, O monkeys, with faces so downcast? Where has your courage gone, abandoning your enthusiasm for battle?
पृष्ठतोऽनुव्रजध्वं मामग्रतो यान्तमाहवे। शूरैरभिजनोपेतैरयुक्तं हि निवर्तितुम्
Follow me from behind as I go forward into the battle; it is not fitting for the brave and noble to turn back.
एवमुक्ताः सुसंक्रुद्धा वायुपुत्रेण धीमता। शैलशृङ्गान् द्रुमांश्चैव जगृहुर्हृष्टमानसाः
Thus addressed by the wise son of the wind, they became greatly enraged; their hearts uplifted, they seized mountain peaks and trees.
अभिपेतुश्च गर्जन्तो राक्षसान् वानरर्षभाः। परिवार्य हनूमन्तमन्वयुश्च महाहवे
Roaring, the foremost of the monkeys rushed at the rākṣasas, surrounding Hanuman and following him into the great battle.
स तैर्वानरमुख्यैस्तु हनूमान् सर्वतो वृतः। हुताशन इवार्चिष्मानदहच्छत्रुवाहिनीम्
Thus surrounded on all sides by those leading monkeys, Hanuman blazed like fire, burning the enemy host.
स राक्षसानां कदनं चकार सुमहाकपिः। वृतो वानरसैन्येन कालान्तकयमोपमः
That great monkey, surrounded by the monkey army and resembling Death at the end of time, wrought destruction among the rākṣasas.
स तु शोकेन चाविष्टः कोपेन महता कपिः। हनूमान् रावणिरथे महतीं पातयच्छिलाम्
Then Hanuman, seized by great grief and anger, hurled a massive rock at Ravana's chariot.
तामापतन्तीं दृष्ट्वैव रथः सारथिना तदा। विधेयाश्वसमायुक्तः विदूरमपवाहितः
Seeing it falling, the charioteer quickly drove the chariot, yoked with well-trained horses, far away.
