The sound in the battlefield was like that of two clouds in the sky, or like the twang of bowstrings; the noise of arrows released from their bows was heard as they clashed.
All the gods, demons, gandharvas, kinnaras, and great serpents, moving through the sky, gathered to witness that wondrous event.
Struck on each other's bodies, their strength doubled; each responded to the other's attacks as they fought in the midst of battle.
The rākṣasa cut down the torrents of arrows released by Rāma in battle, and Rāma likewise cut down the arrows released by the rākṣasa in many pieces.
All the directions and quarters were covered by showers of arrows, and the earth itself was so shrouded on all sides that nothing could be seen.
Then, enraged, the mighty-armed Rāghava cut down the bow in battle and struck the charioteer with eight sharp arrows.
Rāma shattered the chariot with his arrows, killed the horses, and brought them down; thus, Makarākṣa, the night-wanderer, stood on the ground, deprived of his chariot.
That Rākṣasa, standing on the earth, seized a spear with his hand—a terror to all beings, blazing like the fire at the end of the world.
That great spear, hard to obtain, given by Rudra and fearsome, blazed in the sky like another weapon of destruction.
Seeing it, all the gods, seized by fear, fled in all directions; and the night-wanderer whirled the blazing great spear.
Then, in great anger, he hurled it at Rāghava in the mighty battle—the flaming spear, released from the hand of Khara’s son, rushing forth.
With four arrows, Rāghava cut the spear in the sky; that divine, gold-adorned spear, shattered into many pieces by Rāma’s arrows, fell to the earth like a great meteor.
Seeing that spear destroyed by Rāma, whose deeds are effortless, the beings in the sky exclaimed, 'Well done! Well done!'
Seeing his spear destroyed, Makarākṣa, the night-wanderer, raised his fist and called out to Kakutstha, 'Stand! Stand!'
Seeing him charging, Rāghava laughed, and then Rāma fitted the fire-weapon to his bow.
By that weapon, the Rākṣasa was slain by Kakutstha in battle; his heart was pierced, and there he fell and died.
Seeing Makarākṣa’s fall, all the Rākṣasas, terrified by Rāma’s arrows, fled straight to Laṅkā.
The gods, delighted, beheld Khara’s son, the night-wanderer, struck down by the force of Daśaratha’s son’s arrows, lying shattered like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
Listen now to the eighty-third sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddhakāṇḍa.
Hearing that Makarākṣa was slain, Rāvaṇa, the conqueror in battle, was seized by great wrath and ground his teeth.
Enraged, pondering what should be done, he then commanded his son Indrajit, in anger, to go to battle.
Slay, O hero, the mighty Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, whether you are visible or invisible; in every way, you surpass them in strength.
You, whose deeds are unmatched, conquer Indra in battle; what need to say more—seeing these men, will you not slay them in battle?
Thus addressed by the king of the Rākṣasas, Indrajit accepted his father's words and, in the sacrificial ground, duly offered oblations into the fire.
And as he was offering oblations into the fire, Rākṣasa women, wearing red headbands, arrived there in a state of agitation, where Rāvaṇa's son was present.
They brought weapons, arrow-feathered shafts, sacred firewood, bibhītaka fruits, blood-red garments, and a ladle made of black iron.
All around the fire, he spread arrow-feathered shafts and spears, and then seized by the throat a living, entirely black goat.
As soon as the oblation was offered and the smokeless, blazing fire flared up, auspicious signs appeared, indicating victory.
The fire, with flames curling to the right and shining like molten gold, rose up on its own and accepted the offering.
Having offered oblations to the fire and satisfied the gods, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas, he ascended the excellent, invisible, auspicious chariot.
