Sugriva rushed at Kumbhakarna's son in battle, like a swift lion attacking an elephant that roams the slopes of a mountain.
Uprooting many great trees, such as ashvakarna and others, the mighty monkey hurled various other trees as well.
That rain of trees, which covered the sky and was hard to withstand, was cut down by the illustrious Kumbhakarna's son with his sharp arrows.
With precise and fierce arrows, Kumbha struck those trees, making them tremble like dreadful engines of war; seeing that rain of trees shattered by Kumbha, the valiant—
The illustrious and great-souled lord of the monkeys was not shaken; though struck suddenly, he endured those arrows.
Drawing Kumbha's bow, which shone like Indra's, he broke it; then, leaping swiftly, he performed a most difficult feat.
Angrily, he spoke to Kumbha, as one would to an elephant with its tusk broken: 'O elder brother of Nikumbha, your strength and the force of your arrows are indeed wondrous.'
Your dignity and power, whether yours or Ravana's, are like those of Prahlada, Bali, the slayer of Vritra, Kubera, or Varuna.
You alone were born as a son, stronger than your father; you alone, mighty-armed, holding a spear, destroyer of foes—
The gods do not surpass you, just as sorrows do not overcome one who has mastered his senses; act with your great intelligence, and behold my deeds.
By the boon of your uncle, you withstand gods and demons; and Kumbhakarna, by his might, withstands both gods and asuras.
Let all beings today witness the wondrous, great contest between you and me in battle, like that of Shakra and Shambara.
You have performed an unparalleled deed and displayed skill in weapons; these heroic monkeys of terrible valor have been struck down by you.
And, O hero, you have not been slain by me out of fear of reproach; having completed your task and grown weary, rest and witness my strength.
Honored, though with a touch of disdain, by Sugriva's words, his brilliance grew, like the flame of fire when clarified butter is poured upon it.
Then Kumbha seized Sugriva with his arms, both of them exhaling heavily again and again, like elephants maddened beyond measure.
Entwined with each other's limbs, grinding against one another, they released smoky flames from their mouths due to exhaustion.
From the blows of their feet, the earth became sunken, and the ocean, abode of Varuna, was agitated, its waves violently churned.
Then Sugriva, lifting Kumbha, hurled him with force into the salt waters, revealing the ocean floor.
From Kumbha's fall, a mass of water, resembling Mount Vindhya or Mandara, surged up and spread in all directions.
Then Kumbha, leaping up, rushed at Sugriva and struck his chest in anger with a fist like a thunderbolt.
His armor burst open, blood appeared, and that mighty blow of the fist struck his bones with great force.
From the force of that blow, a great blazing energy arose there, like a flame produced by the striking of a thunderbolt on Mount Meru.
Struck there by him, Sugriva, the foremost of monkeys, gathered his mighty fist, equal to a thunderbolt.
With a fist shining like a circle of a thousand rays of fire, the valiant Sugriva struck Kumbha on the chest.
Struck by that blow, Kumbha, overwhelmed and greatly tormented, fell down like a fire whose flames have gone out.
Struck by that fist, the demon quickly fell, like the red planet Mars, its rays blazing, falling from the sky by chance.
The form of Kumbha as he fell, his chest shattered by the fist, shone like the form of the bull of the cows struck by Rudra.
When that Kumbha, of terrible valor, was slain in battle by the bull among monkeys, the earth with its mountains and forests trembled, and greater fear entered the demons.
