तावप्युभौ मानुषराजपुत्रौ तं गन्धमाघ्राय महौषधीनाम्। बभूवतुस्तत्र तदा विशल्या- वुत्तस्थुरन्ये च हरिप्रवीराः
Then both sons of the human king, inhaling the fragrance of those great medicinal herbs, were healed of their wounds; and the other foremost monkeys also rose up, restored.
यदाप्रभृति लङ्कायां युध्यन्ते हरिराक्षसाः। तदाप्रभृति मानार्थमाज्ञया रावणस्य च
From the time the monkeys and rākṣasas began to fight in Laṅkā, by Rāvaṇa's command and for the sake of honor,
ये हन्यन्ते रणे तत्र राक्षसाः कपिकुञ्जरैः। हता हतास्तु क्षिप्यन्ते सर्व एव तु सागरे
All the rākṣasas who are slain there in battle by monkeys or bears are cast into the sea, every one of them, as soon as they fall.
ततो हरिर्गन्धवहात्मजस्तु तमोषधीशैलमुदग्रवेगः। निनाय वेगाद्धिमवन्तमेव पुनश्च रामेण समाजगाम
Then Hanumān, the son of the wind-god, with tremendous speed, carried the mountain of medicinal herbs back to Himavat, and then returned again to Rāma.

ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजाः सुग्रीवो वानरेश्वरः। अर्थ्यं विज्ञापयंश्चापि हनूमन्तमिदं वचः
Then Sugrīva, the mighty and radiant king of the monkeys, spoke these words to Hanumān, making a request:
यतो हतः कुम्भकर्णः कुमाराश्च निषूदिताः। नेदानीमुपनिर्हारं रावणो दातुमर्हति
Since Kumbhakarṇa has been slain and the princes have been destroyed, Rāvaṇa is no longer likely to offer surrender now.
ये ये महाबलाः सन्ति लघवश्च प्लवंगमाः। लङ्कामभिपतन्त्वाशु गृह्योल्काः प्लवगर्षभाः
All the mighty and even the swift monkeys—let the best of the monkey warriors seize torches and quickly rush upon Laṅkā!
ततोऽस्तं गत आदित्ये रौद्रे तस्मिन् निशामुखे। लङ्कामभिमुखाः सोल्का जग्मुस्ते प्लवगर्षभाः
Then, as the sun set and night began, those foremost monkey warriors, torches in hand, advanced toward Laṅkā.
उल्काहस्तैर्हरिगणैः सर्वतः समभिद्रुताः। आरक्षस्था विरूपाक्षाः सहसा विप्रदुद्रुवुः
Assaulted on all sides by the monkey hosts wielding torches, the rākṣasas stationed as guards, with deformed eyes, suddenly fled in panic.
गोपुराट्टप्रतोलीषु चर्यासु विविधासु च। प्रासादेषु च संहृष्टाः ससृजुस्ते हुताशनम्
In gateways, towers, streets, and various quarters, and in the palaces, the jubilant monkeys set fire everywhere.
तेषां गृहसहस्राणि ददाह हुतभुक् तदा। प्रासादाः पर्वताकाराः पतन्ति धरणीतले
At that time, the Fire-god burned thousands of their houses; palace-mansions shaped like mountains collapsed onto the earth.
अगुरुर्दह्यते तत्र परं चैव सुचन्दनम्। मौक्तिका मणयः स्निग्धा वज्रं चापि प्रवालकम्
There, aloeswood was consumed by fire, as well as the finest sandalwood, lustrous pearls, smooth gems, diamonds, and coral.
क्षौमं च दह्यते तत्र कौशेयं चापि शोभनम्। आविकं विविधं चौर्णं काञ्चनं भाण्डमायुधम्
Linen was also burned there, along with beautiful silk, various woolen cloths, powdered substances, golden vessels, and weapons.
नानाविकृतसंस्थानं वाजिभाण्डपरिच्छदम्। गजग्रैवेयकक्ष्याश्च रथभाण्डांश्च संस्कृतान्
All sorts of horse equipment of diverse shapes, elephant armor and girths, and well-crafted chariot fittings were consumed.
तनुत्राणि च योधानां हस्त्यश्वानां च वर्म च। खड्गा धनूंषि ज्याबाणास्तोमराङ्कुशशक्तयः
The armor of warriors, the mail of elephants and horses, swords, bows, bowstrings, arrows, javelins, hooks, and spears—all were burned.
रोमजं वालजं चर्म व्याघ्रजं चाण्डजं बहु। मुक्तामणिविचित्रांश्च प्रासादांश्च समन्ततः
Hides from hair, wool, tiger skins, and many bird skins, as well as mansions adorned with pearls and gems, were destroyed on all sides.
विविधानस्त्रसंघातानग्निर्दहति तत्र वै। नानाविधान् गृहांश्चित्रान् ददाह हुतभुक् तदा
There, the fire consumed various collections of weapons, and at that time, the Fire-god burned many splendid and diverse houses.
आवासान् राक्षसानां च सर्वेषां गृहगृध्नुनाम्। हेमचित्रतनुत्राणां स्रग्भाण्डाम्बरधारिणाम्
He burned the dwellings of all the greedy rakshasas, who wore golden, decorated armor, garlands, ornaments, and garments.
सीधुपानचलाक्षाणां मदविह्वलगामिनाम्। कान्तालम्बितवस्त्राणां शत्रुसंजातमन्युनाम्
Of those who drank liquor and played dice, who wandered about intoxicated, whose garments hung from their beloveds, and whose anger had arisen from enmity.
गदाशूलासिहस्तानां खादतां पिबतामपि। शयनेषु महार्हेषु प्रसुप्तानां प्रियैः सह
Of those holding maces, spears, and swords, of those eating and drinking, and even of those sleeping with their beloveds on costly beds.
त्रस्तानां गच्छतां तूर्णं पुत्रानादाय सर्वतः। तेषां शतसहस्राणि तदा लङ्कानिवासिनाम्
Of those terrified, hastily fleeing in all directions, taking their children with them; at that time, hundreds of thousands of the inhabitants of Lanka.
अदहत् पावकस्तत्र जज्वाल च पुनः पुनः। सारवन्ति महार्हाणि गम्भीरगुणवन्ति च
There, the Fire-god burned them and blazed again and again; mansions filled with precious things and possessing deep qualities.
हेमचन्द्रार्धचन्द्राणि चन्द्रशालोन्नतानि च। तत्र चित्रगवाक्षाणि साधिष्ठानानि सर्वशः
With golden and silver crescent shapes, and moon-chambered towers rising high; there, with ornate windows, all with their own platforms.
मणिविद्रुमचित्राणि स्पृशन्तीव दिवाकरम्। क्रौञ्चबर्हिणवीणानां भूषणानां च निःस्वनैः
Adorned with gems and coral, as if touching the sun; resounding with the sounds of krauncha and peacock lutes and ornaments.
नादितान्यचलाभानि वेश्मान्यग्निर्ददाह सः। ज्वलनेन परीतानि तोरणानि चकाशिरे
He, the fire, burned mansions that echoed like immovable mountains; gateways surrounded by flames shone brightly.
विद्युद्भिरिव नद्धानि मेघजालानि घर्मगे। ज्वलनेन परीतानि गृहाणि प्रचकाशिरे
Like clouds bound with lightning in the heat of summer, houses surrounded by fire shone forth.
दावाग्निदीप्तानि यथा शिखराणि महागिरेः। विमानेषु प्रसुप्ताश्च दह्यमाना वराङ्गनाः
Just as the peaks of a great mountain blaze with wildfire, so too, noble women sleeping in the mansions were being burned.
त्यक्ताभरणसंयोगा हाहेत्युच्चैर्विचुक्रुशुः। तत्र चाग्निपरीतानि निपेतुर्भवनान्यपि
Deprived of their ornaments, they cried out loudly, 'Alas! Alas!' and there, the houses surrounded by fire also collapsed.
वज्रिवज्रहतानीव शिखराणि महागिरेः। तानि निर्दह्यमानानि दूरतः प्रचकाशिरे
Like the peaks of a great mountain struck by the thunderbolt of Indra, those burning structures shone from afar.
