नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णं विकासिकमलोत्पलम्। सेवितं देवगन्धर्वैः षष्टियोजनमुच्छ्रितम्
Covered with various trees and creepers, blossoming with lotuses and water-lilies, frequented by gods and gandharvas, and rising sixty yojanas high.
विद्याधरैर्मुनिगणैरप्सरोभिर्निषेवितम्। नानामृगगणाकीर्णं बहुकन्दरशोभितम्
Attended by vidyādharas, groups of sages, and apsarases, filled with many kinds of animals and adorned with many caves.
सर्वानाकुलयंस्तत्र यक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरान्। हनूमान् मेघसंकाशो ववृधे मारुतात्मजः
There Hanuman, resembling a cloud and son of the wind, grew in size, causing confusion among all the yakṣas, gandharvas, and kinnaras.
पद्भ्यां तु शैलमापीड्य वडवामुखवन्मुखम्। विवृत्योग्रं ननादोच्चैस्त्रासयन् रजनीचरान्
Pressing the mountain with his feet, Hanuman opened his fierce mouth wide like the submarine fire, and roared loudly, terrifying the night-stalkers.
तस्य नानद्यमानस्य श्रुत्वा निनदमुत्तमम्। लङ्कास्था राक्षसव्याघ्रा न शेकुः स्पन्दितुं क्वचित्
Hearing his mighty roar, the tiger-like rākṣasas in Lanka could not move at all.
नमस्कृत्वा समुद्राय मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः। राघवार्थे परं कर्म समीहत परंतपः
Having bowed to the ocean, Hanuman of terrible prowess, the scorcher of foes, undertook the supreme task for the sake of Raghava.
स पुच्छमुद्यम्य भुजङ्गकल्पं विनम्य पृष्ठं श्रवणे निकुच्य। विवृत्य वक्त्रं वडवामुखाभ- मापुप्लुवे व्योम्नि स चण्डवेगः
He raised his tail, serpent-like, bent his back, drew in his ears, opened his mouth wide like the maw of a submarine fire, and with fierce speed leapt into the sky.
स वृक्षखण्डांस्तरसा जहार शैलान् शिलाः प्राकृतवानरांश्च। बाहूरुवेगोद्गतसम्प्रणुन्ना- स्ते क्षीणवेगाः सलिले निपेतुः
With great swiftness he seized tree trunks, mountains, rocks, and common monkeys; propelled by the force of his arms and thighs, they, their momentum spent, fell into the water.
स तौ प्रसार्योरगभोगकल्पौ भुजौ भुजंगारिनिकाशवीर्यः। जगाम शैलं नगराजमग्र्यं दिशः प्रकर्षन्निव वायुसूनुः
He stretched out his two arms, resembling the coils of serpents, his strength like the enemy of serpents; the son of the wind sped toward the foremost king of mountains, as if drawing the directions with him.
स सागरं घूर्णितवीचिमालं तदम्भसा भ्रामितसर्वसत्त्वम्। समीक्षमाणः सहसा जगाम चक्रं यथा विष्णुकराग्रमुक्तम्
He beheld the ocean, garlanded with swirling waves, its waters tossing all creatures; swiftly he moved onward, like the discus released from Vishnu’s hand.
स पर्वतान् पक्षिगणान् सरांसि नदीस्तटाकानि पुरोत्तमानि। स्फीताञ्जनांस्तानपि सम्प्रवीक्ष्य जगाम वेगात् पितृतुल्यवेगः
He surveyed mountains, flocks of birds, lakes, rivers, and splendid cities; seeing the flourishing Anjana mountain as well, he sped on with a force equal to his father’s.
आदित्यपथमाश्रित्य जगाम स गतश्रमः। हनूमांस्त्वरितो वीरः पितुस्तुल्यपराक्रमः
Taking the path of the sun, Hanuman, the tireless and swift hero, whose valor matched his father’s, hastened onward.
जवेन महता युक्तो मारुतिर्वातरंहसा। जगाम हरिशार्दूलो दिशः शब्देन नादयन्
Endowed with immense speed, Hanuman, the tiger among monkeys, traveled with the swiftness of the wind, resounding in all directions with his roar.
स्मरञ्जाम्बवतो वाक्यं मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः। ददर्श सहसा चापि हिमवन्तं महाकपिः
Remembering Jambavan’s words, Hanuman of terrible prowess, the great monkey, suddenly beheld the Himalaya.
नानाप्रस्रवणोपेतं बहुकन्दरनिर्झरम्। श्वेताभ्रचयसंकाशैः शिखरैश्चारुदर्शनैः। शोभितं विविधैर्वृक्षैरगमत् पर्वतोत्तमम्
He reached the supreme mountain, adorned with many springs, numerous caves and waterfalls, its peaks shining like clusters of white clouds, and beautiful with various trees.
स तं समासाद्य महानगेन्द्र- मतिप्रवृद्धोत्तमहेमशृङ्गम्। ददर्श पुण्यानि महाश्रमाणि सुरर्षिसङ्घोत्तमसेवितानि
Approaching that great lord of mountains, with its exceedingly lofty golden peaks, he saw the sacred hermitages, frequented by the foremost hosts of gods and sages.
स ब्रह्मकोशं रजतालयं च शक्रालयं रुद्रशरप्रमोक्षम्। हयाननं ब्रह्मशिरश्च दीप्तं ददर्श वैवस्वतकिंकरांश्च
He saw the abode of Brahma, the silver mansion, the dwelling of Indra, the place where Rudra’s arrow was released, the horse-headed peak, the radiant Brahma’s head, and the attendants of Vaivasvata.
वह्न्यालयं वैश्रवणालयं च सूर्यप्रभं सूर्यनिबन्धनं च। ब्रह्मालयं शङ्करकार्मुकं च ददर्श नाभिं च वसुन्धरायाः
He saw the abode of Agni, the mansion of Kubera, the Sun’s brilliance, the place where the Sun is bound, Brahma’s abode, Shiva’s bow, and the navel of the earth.
कैलासमग्र्यं हिमवच्छिलां च तं वै वृषं काञ्चनशैलमग्र्यम्। प्रदीप्तसर्वौषधिसम्प्रदीप्तं ददर्श सर्वौषधिपर्वतेन्द्रम्
He saw the summit of Kailasa, the icy rock of the Himalaya, that bull-like golden mountain, blazing with all medicinal herbs, the lord of all herb-bearing mountains.
स तं समीक्ष्यानलराशिदीप्तं विसिस्मिये वासवदूतसूनुः। आप्लुत्य तं चौषधिपर्वतेन्द्रं तत्रौषधीनां विचयं चकार
Beholding that mountain blazing with masses of fire, the son of the wind was amazed; leaping onto that lord of herb-bearing mountains, he began to search for the herbs.
स योजनसहस्राणि समतीत्य महाकपिः। दिव्यौषधिधरं शैलं व्यचरन्मारुतात्मजः
Having crossed thousands of leagues, the great monkey, son of the wind, roamed the divine, herb-bearing mountain.
महौषध्यस्ततः सर्वास्तस्मिन् पर्वतसत्तमे। विज्ञायार्थिनमायान्तं ततो जग्मुरदर्शनम्
Then all the great medicinal herbs on that foremost mountain, perceiving the seeker approaching, became invisible.
स ता महात्मा हनुमानपश्यं- श्चुकोप रोषाच्च भृशं ननाद। अमृष्यमाणोऽग्निसमानचक्षु- र्महीधरेन्द्रं तमुवाच वाक्यम्
That great-souled Hanuman, not seeing them, grew angry and roared loudly in his wrath; unable to bear it, his eyes blazing like fire, he spoke to that lord of mountains.
किमेतदेवं सुविनिश्चितं ते यद् राघवे नासि कृतानुकम्पः। पश्याद्य मद्बाहुबलाभिभूतो विकीर्णमात्मानमथो नगेन्द्र
How is it that you are so firmly resolved not to show compassion to Rāghava? Today, overwhelmed by the strength of my arms, you will see yourself scattered, O king of mountains.
स तस्य शृङ्गं सनगं सनागं सकाञ्चनं धातुसहस्रजुष्टम्। विकीर्णकूटं ज्वलिताग्रसानुं प्रगृह्य वेगात् सहसोन्ममाथ
He seized its peak—along with its forests, elephants, and golden ores, adorned with thousands of minerals, its summits shattered and its crest blazing—and wrenched it up with great force.
स तं समुत्पाट्य खमुत्पपात वित्रास्य लोकान् ससुरासुरेन्द्रान्। संस्तूयमानः खचरैरनेकै- र्जगाम वेगाद् गरुडोग्रवेगः
Uprooting that mountain, he leapt into the sky, terrifying all the worlds, including the lords of gods and demons. Praised by many sky-dwellers, he sped onward with the fierce swiftness of Garuḍa.
स भास्कराध्वानमनुप्रपन्न- स्तं भास्कराभं शिखरं प्रगृह्य। बभौ तदा भास्करसंनिकाशो रवेः समीपे प्रतिभास्कराभः
He entered the path of the sun, holding that sun-bright peak. At that moment, he shone like the sun itself, radiant near the sun, resembling a second sun.
स तेन शैलेन भृशं रराज शैलोपमो गन्धवहात्मजस्तु। सहस्रधारेण सपावकेन चक्रेण खे विष्णुरिवार्पितेन
With that mountain, the son of the wind-god shone brilliantly, resembling a mountain himself. With a thousand blazing streams, he looked like Viṣṇu in the sky, wielding his fiery discus.
तं वानराः प्रेक्ष्य तदा विनेदुः स तानपि प्रेक्ष्य मुदा ननाद। तेषां समुत्कृष्टरवं निशम्य लङ्कालया भीमतरं विनेदुः
Seeing him then, the monkeys shouted with joy; and seeing them, he too roared in delight. Hearing their triumphant cries, the residents of Laṅkā wailed even more fearfully.
ततो महात्मा निपपात तस्मिन् शैलोत्तमे वानरसैन्यमध्ये। हर्युत्तमेभ्यः शिरसाभिवाद्य विभीषणं तत्र च सस्वजे सः
Then the great-souled one descended onto that lofty mountain, in the midst of the monkey army. Bowing his head to the foremost monkeys, he embraced Vibhīṣaṇa there.
