धरते मारुतिस्तात मारुतप्रतिमो यदि। वैश्वानरसमो वीर्ये जीविताशा ततो भवेत्
'If Hanuman, equal to the wind in might and resembling fire in energy, still breathes, then hope for life remains.'
ततो वृद्धमुपागम्य विनयेनाभ्यवादयत्। गृह्य जाम्बवतः पादौ हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
Then Hanuman, son of the Wind, approached the aged one, greeted him with humility, and took hold of Jambavan's feet.
श्रुत्वा हनूमतो वाक्यं तदा विव्यथितेन्द्रियः। पुनर्जातमिवात्मानं मन्यते स्मर्क्षपुङ्गवः
Hearing Hanuman's words, Jambavan, his senses agitated, felt as if he had been born anew.
ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजा हनूमन्तं स जाम्बवान्। आगच्छ हरिशार्दूल वानरांस्त्रातुमर्हसि
Then Jambavan, of great brilliance, spoke to Hanuman: 'Come, tiger among vanaras, you must save the vanaras.'
नान्यो विक्रमपर्याप्तस्त्वमेषां परमः सखा। त्वत्पराक्रमकालोऽयं नान्यं पश्यामि कञ्चन
'No one else has sufficient prowess; you are their foremost friend. This is the time for your valor; I see no one else at all.'
ऋक्षवानरवीराणामनीकानि प्रहर्षय। विशल्यौ कुरु चाप्येतौ सादितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
'Inspire the troops of heroic bears and vanaras; also heal these two, Rama and Lakshmana, who have been struck down.'
गत्वा परममध्वानमुपर्युपरि सागरम्। हिमवन्तं नगश्रेष्ठं हनूमन् गन्तुमर्हसि
'You must go, Hanuman, across the vast ocean, to the highest mountain, Himavat, the chief of mountains.'
ततः काञ्चनमत्युच्चमृषभं पर्वतोत्तमम्। कैलासशिखरं चात्र द्रक्ष्यस्यरिनिषूदन
Then, O destroyer of enemies, you will see there the supreme mountain, the golden, towering bull among peaks, the summit of Kailāsa.
तयोः शिखरयोर्मध्ये प्रदीप्तमतुलप्रभम्। सर्वौषधियुतं वीर द्रक्ष्यस्योषधिपर्वतम्
Between those two peaks, O hero, you will see the blazing mountain of herbs, shining with incomparable radiance and filled with all medicinal plants.
तस्य वानरशार्दूल चतस्रो मूर्ध्नि सम्भवाः। द्रक्ष्यस्योषधयो दीप्ता दीपयन्तीर्दिशो दश
On its summit, O tiger among monkeys, you will see four brilliant herbs, arising there and illuminating the ten directions.
मृतसञ्जीवनीं चैव विशल्यकरणीमपि। सुवर्णकरणीं चैव संधानीं च महौषधीम्
These are the Mṛtasañjīvanī, the Viśalyakaraṇī, the Suvarṇakaraṇī, and the mighty Saṃdhānī herb.
ताः सर्वा हनुमन् गृह्य क्षिप्रमागन्तुमर्हसि। आश्वासय हरीन् प्राणैर्योज्य गन्धवहात्मज
Hanuman, you must quickly gather all these and return; revive the monkeys by joining their life-breaths, O son of the wind.
श्रुत्वा जाम्बवतो वाक्यं हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। आपूर्यत बलोद्धर्षैर्वायुवेगैरिवार्णवः
Hearing Jāmbavān's words, Hanuman, son of the wind, was filled with strength and vigor, like the ocean swelling with the force of the wind.
स पर्वततटाग्रस्थः पीडयन् पर्वतोत्तमम्। हनूमान् दृश्यते वीरो द्वितीय इव पर्वतः
Standing atop the mountain's peak, the heroic Hanuman pressed down on the great mountain and appeared like a second mountain himself.
हरिपादविनिर्भग्नो निषसाद स पर्वतः। न शशाक तदात्मानं वोढुं भृशनिपीडितः
Crushed by the monkey's feet, the mountain sank down, unable to support itself, overwhelmed by the intense pressure.
तस्य पेतुर्नगा भूमौ हरिवेगाच्च जज्वलुः। शृङ्गाणि च व्यकीर्यन्त पीडितस्य हनूमता
Its trees fell to the ground and blazed from the monkey's force, and its peaks were shattered by Hanuman's pressure.
तस्मिन् सम्पीड्यमाने तु भग्नद्रुमशिलातले। न शेकुर्वानराः स्थातुं घूर्णमाने नगोत्तमे
As the great mountain was being crushed, with its trees and rocks broken, the monkeys could not stand upon it as it swayed.
सा घूर्णितमहाद्वारा प्रभग्नगृहगोपुरा। लङ्का त्रासाकुला रात्रौ प्रनृत्तेवाभवत् तदा
With its great gates shaking, its houses and towers broken, Lanka, filled with fear and confusion in the night, seemed as if it were dancing.
पृथिवीधरसंकाशो निपीड्य पृथिवीधरम्। पृथिवीं क्षोभयामास सार्णवां मारुतात्मजः
Like a mountain among mountains, Hanuman, son of the wind, pressed down on the mountain and shook the earth together with the ocean.
आरुरोह तदा तस्माद्धरिर्मलयपर्वतम्। मेरुमन्दरसंकाशं नानाप्रस्रवणाकुलम्
Then the monkey climbed the Malaya mountain, resembling Meru and Mandara, crowded with many streams.
नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णं विकासिकमलोत्पलम्। सेवितं देवगन्धर्वैः षष्टियोजनमुच्छ्रितम्
Covered with various trees and creepers, blossoming with lotuses and water-lilies, frequented by gods and gandharvas, and rising sixty yojanas high.
विद्याधरैर्मुनिगणैरप्सरोभिर्निषेवितम्। नानामृगगणाकीर्णं बहुकन्दरशोभितम्
Attended by vidyādharas, groups of sages, and apsarases, filled with many kinds of animals and adorned with many caves.
सर्वानाकुलयंस्तत्र यक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरान्। हनूमान् मेघसंकाशो ववृधे मारुतात्मजः
There Hanuman, resembling a cloud and son of the wind, grew in size, causing confusion among all the yakṣas, gandharvas, and kinnaras.
पद्भ्यां तु शैलमापीड्य वडवामुखवन्मुखम्। विवृत्योग्रं ननादोच्चैस्त्रासयन् रजनीचरान्
Pressing the mountain with his feet, Hanuman opened his fierce mouth wide like the submarine fire, and roared loudly, terrifying the night-stalkers.
तस्य नानद्यमानस्य श्रुत्वा निनदमुत्तमम्। लङ्कास्था राक्षसव्याघ्रा न शेकुः स्पन्दितुं क्वचित्
Hearing his mighty roar, the tiger-like rākṣasas in Lanka could not move at all.
नमस्कृत्वा समुद्राय मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः। राघवार्थे परं कर्म समीहत परंतपः
Having bowed to the ocean, Hanuman of terrible prowess, the scorcher of foes, undertook the supreme task for the sake of Raghava.
स पुच्छमुद्यम्य भुजङ्गकल्पं विनम्य पृष्ठं श्रवणे निकुच्य। विवृत्य वक्त्रं वडवामुखाभ- मापुप्लुवे व्योम्नि स चण्डवेगः
He raised his tail, serpent-like, bent his back, drew in his ears, opened his mouth wide like the maw of a submarine fire, and with fierce speed leapt into the sky.
स वृक्षखण्डांस्तरसा जहार शैलान् शिलाः प्राकृतवानरांश्च। बाहूरुवेगोद्गतसम्प्रणुन्ना- स्ते क्षीणवेगाः सलिले निपेतुः
With great swiftness he seized tree trunks, mountains, rocks, and common monkeys; propelled by the force of his arms and thighs, they, their momentum spent, fell into the water.
स तौ प्रसार्योरगभोगकल्पौ भुजौ भुजंगारिनिकाशवीर्यः। जगाम शैलं नगराजमग्र्यं दिशः प्रकर्षन्निव वायुसूनुः
He stretched out his two arms, resembling the coils of serpents, his strength like the enemy of serpents; the son of the wind sped toward the foremost king of mountains, as if drawing the directions with him.
स सागरं घूर्णितवीचिमालं तदम्भसा भ्रामितसर्वसत्त्वम्। समीक्षमाणः सहसा जगाम चक्रं यथा विष्णुकराग्रमुक्तम्
He beheld the ocean, garlanded with swirling waves, its waters tossing all creatures; swiftly he moved onward, like the discus released from Vishnu’s hand.
