"Do not fear; this is not the time for despair. Though the noble princes are helpless and distressed, they are bearing the force of Indrajit's weapons, granted by the Self-born."
"This supreme weapon, the unfailing Brahmāstra, was given by the Self-born. The princes, honoring it in battle, have been struck down. So, what is the time for despair here?"
Then Hanūmān, wise and resolute, having heard Vibhīṣaṇa's words and honored the Brahmāstra, spoke as follows.
"Among the monkey army struck by this weapon, let us comfort each one who still holds on to life."
Then those two heroes, Hanūmān and the foremost Rākṣasa, both holding firebrands in their hands, roamed together at the head of the battlefield during the night.
They saw bodies with broken tails, hands, thighs, fingers, heads, and necks, with limbs oozing blood and wounds flowing all around.
The earth appeared covered with fallen monkeys, mountain-like in form, and with shining weapons lying scattered everywhere.
They saw Sugrīva, Aṅgada, Nīla, Śarabha, Gandhamādana, Jāmbavān, Suṣeṇa, and Vegadarśin.
Vibhīṣaṇa and Hanūmān also saw Mainda, Nala, Jyotirmukha, Dvivida, and other monkeys slain in battle.
Sixty-seven crores of swift vanaras were slain by the beloved of the Self-born, as the fifth part of the day remained.
Seeing the army, struck by arrows, vast and dreadful like a flood of the ocean, Hanuman, with Vibhishana, searched for Jambavan.
They saw Jambavan, the heroic son of Prajapati, aged and worn by nature, his body pierced by hundreds of arrows, like fire about to be extinguished.
Seeing him, the Rakshasa approached and spoke these words: 'Noble one, have your vital breaths not been destroyed by these sharp arrows?'
Hearing Vibhishana's words, Jambavan, the foremost of bears, with difficulty raised himself and spoke these words.
'O mighty lord of the Rakshasas, I recognize you by your voice; though my body is pierced by sharp arrows, I cannot see you with my eyes.'
'Wherever Hanuman, the best of vanaras, son of Anjana and the wind-god, who is of noble vows, preserves his life, there hope remains.'
Hearing Jambavan's words, Vibhishana spoke: 'Why, after passing over the sons of the noble one, do you ask about Maruti?'
'Neither for King Sugriva, nor for Angada, nor even for Rama, has such special affection been shown, noble one, as for the son of the Wind.'
Hearing Vibhishana's words, Jambavan spoke: 'Listen, tiger among Rakshasas, why I ask about Maruti.'
'While this hero lives, even if the army is slain, it is not destroyed; but if Hanuman gives up his life, even if we live, we are as good as dead.'
'If Hanuman, equal to the wind in might and resembling fire in energy, still breathes, then hope for life remains.'
Then Hanuman, son of the Wind, approached the aged one, greeted him with humility, and took hold of Jambavan's feet.
Hearing Hanuman's words, Jambavan, his senses agitated, felt as if he had been born anew.
Then Jambavan, of great brilliance, spoke to Hanuman: 'Come, tiger among vanaras, you must save the vanaras.'
'No one else has sufficient prowess; you are their foremost friend. This is the time for your valor; I see no one else at all.'
'Inspire the troops of heroic bears and vanaras; also heal these two, Rama and Lakshmana, who have been struck down.'
'You must go, Hanuman, across the vast ocean, to the highest mountain, Himavat, the chief of mountains.'
Then, O destroyer of enemies, you will see there the supreme mountain, the golden, towering bull among peaks, the summit of Kailāsa.
Between those two peaks, O hero, you will see the blazing mountain of herbs, shining with incomparable radiance and filled with all medicinal plants.
On its summit, O tiger among monkeys, you will see four brilliant herbs, arising there and illuminating the ten directions.
