ततः स रक्षोधिपतिर्महात्मा सर्वा दिशो बाणगणैः शिताग्रैः। प्रच्छादयामास रविप्रकाशै- र्विदारयामास च वानरेन्द्रान्
Then that great-souled lord of the rakshasas covered all directions with groups of sharp arrows, radiant as the sun, and tore apart the monkey chiefs.
स शूलनिस्त्रिंशपरश्वधानि व्याविद्धदीप्तानलसप्रभाणि। सविस्फुलिङ्गोज्ज्वलपावकानि ववर्ष तीव्रं प्लवगेन्द्रसैन्ये
He rained down spears, swords, axes, blazing like fiery flames, sparkling and brilliant, upon the army of monkey chiefs.
ततो ज्वलनसंकाशैर्बाणैर्वानरयूथपाः। ताडिताः शक्रजिद्बाणैः प्रफुल्ला इव किंशुकाः
Then, struck by Indrajit's arrows, glowing like fire, the monkey leaders appeared like blossoming kimshuka trees.
तेऽन्योन्यमभिसर्पन्तो निनदन्तश्च विस्वरम्। राक्षसेन्द्रास्त्रनिर्भिन्ना निपेतुर्वानरर्षभाः
Rushing at each other and crying out in confusion, pierced by the weapons of the king of the rakshasas, the foremost monkeys fell.
उदीक्षमाणा गगनं केचिन्नेत्रेषु ताडिताः। शरैर्विविशुरन्योन्यं पेतुश्च जगतीतले
Some, gazing at the sky, struck in the eyes by arrows, entered into one another and fell to the earth.
हनूमन्तं च सुग्रीवमङ्गदं गन्धमादनम्। जाम्बवन्तं सुषेणं च वेगदर्शिनमेव च
Hanuman, Sugriva, Angada, Gandhamadana, Jambavan, Sushena, and also Vegadarshi,
मैन्दं च द्विविदं नीलं गवाक्षं गवयं तथा। केसरिं हरिलोमानं विद्युद्दंष्ट्रं च वानरम्
Mainda, Dvivida, Nila, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Kesari, Hariloma, Vidyuddamshtra the monkey,
सूर्याननं ज्योतिर्मुखं तथा दधिमुखं हरिम्। पावकाक्षं नलं चैव कुमुदं चैव वानरम्
Suryanana, Jyotirmukha, Dadhimukha the monkey, Pavakaksha, Nala, and Kumuda the monkey,
प्रासैः शूलैः शितैर्बाणैरिन्द्रजिन्मन्त्रसंहितैः। विव्याध हरिशार्दूलान् सर्वांस्तान् राक्षसोत्तमः
With spears, lances, sharp arrows, empowered by Indrajit's mantras, that foremost rakshasa pierced all those tiger-like monkeys.
स वै गदाभिर्हरियूथमुख्यान् निर्भिद्य बाणैस्तपनीयवर्णैः। ववर्ष रामं शरवृष्टिजालैः सलक्ष्मणं भास्कररश्मिकल्पैः
He struck the chief monkey leaders with maces and arrows, golden-hued; he showered Rama and Lakshmana with torrents of arrows, like rays of the sun.
स बाणवर्षैरभिवृष्यमाणो धारानिपातानिव तानचिन्त्य। समीक्षमाणः परमाद्भुतश्री- रामस्तदा लक्ष्मणमित्युवाच
Rama, being showered with a rain of arrows, like streams pouring down, gazed in wonder and spoke to Lakshmana.
असौ पुनर्लक्ष्मण राक्षसेन्द्रो ब्रह्मास्त्रमाश्रित्य सुरेन्द्रशत्रुः। निपातयित्वा हरिसैन्यमस्मान्- शितैः शरैरर्दयति प्रसक्तम्
Lakṣmaṇa, that king of the Rākṣasas, the foe of the lord of the gods, having resorted to the Brahmāstra, has struck down our army of monkeys and now relentlessly torments us with sharp arrows.
स्वयंभुवा दत्तवरो महात्मा समाहितोऽन्तर्हितभीमकायः। कथं नु शक्यो युधि नष्टदेहो निहन्तुमद्येन्द्रजिदुद्यतास्त्रः
Granted a boon by the Self-born, that great-souled one, composed and with his dreadful form vanished, how can Indrajit, now wielding his weapons, be slain in battle when his body is lost?
मन्ये स्वयंभूर्भगवानचिन्त्य- स्तस्यैतदस्त्रं प्रभवश्च योऽस्य। बाणावपातं त्वमिहाद्य धीमन् मया सहाव्यग्रमनाः सहस्व
I think the Self-born Lord alone knows the power of this weapon and its source; but you, steadfast one, endure the fall of these arrows here today with me, keeping your mind unshaken.
प्रच्छादयत्येष हि राक्षसेन्द्रः सर्वा दिशः सायकवृष्टिजालैः। एतच्च सर्वं पतिताग्र्यशूरं न भ्राजते वानरराजसैन्यम्
This king of the Rākṣasas is covering all directions with torrents of arrow-rain; and now, with all the foremost heroes fallen, the army of the monkey king no longer shines.
आवां तु दृष्ट्वा पतितौ विसंज्ञौ निवृत्तयुद्धौ हतहर्षरोषौ। ध्रुवं प्रवेक्ष्यत्यमरारिवास- मसौ समासाद्य रणाग्र्यलक्ष्मीम्
Seeing us both fallen, unconscious, withdrawn from battle, with our joy and anger destroyed, surely that slayer of the immortals' foes, having attained supreme glory in war, will enter his city.
ततस्तदा वानरसैन्यमेवं रामं च संख्ये सह लक्ष्मणेन। विषादयित्वा सहसा विवेश पुरीं दशग्रीवभुजाभिगुप्ताम्। संस्तूयमानः स तु यातुधानैः पित्रे च सर्वं हृषितोऽभ्युवाच
Then, having thus suddenly disheartened the monkey army and Rāma together with Lakṣmaṇa in battle, he entered the city guarded by the arms of the ten-headed one, praised by the Rākṣasas, and joyfully reported everything to his father.

When those two were struck down at the forefront of battle, the army of monkey chiefs was bewildered; Sugrīva, Nīla, Aṅgada, and Jāmbavān did not respond at all.
ततो विषण्णं समवेक्ष्य सर्वं विभीषणो बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठः। उवाच शाखामृगराजवीरा- नाश्वासयन्नप्रतिमैर्वचोभिः
Then Vibhīṣaṇa, foremost among the wise, seeing all the army dejected, spoke to the heroic leaders of the monkey troops, consoling them with incomparable words.
मा भैष्ट नास्त्यत्र विषादकालो यदार्यपुत्रौ ह्यवशौ विषण्णौ। स्वयंभुवो वाक्यमथोद्वहन्तौ यत्सादिताविन्द्रजितास्त्रजालैः
"Do not fear; this is not the time for despair. Though the noble princes are helpless and distressed, they are bearing the force of Indrajit's weapons, granted by the Self-born."
तस्मै तु दत्तं परमास्त्रमेतत् स्वयंभुवा ब्राह्मममोघवीर्यम्। तन्मानयन्तौ युधि राजपुत्रौ निपातितौ कोऽत्र विषादकालः
"This supreme weapon, the unfailing Brahmāstra, was given by the Self-born. The princes, honoring it in battle, have been struck down. So, what is the time for despair here?"
ब्राह्ममस्त्रं ततो धीमान् मानयित्वा तु मारुतिः। विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा हनूमानिदमब्रवीत्
Then Hanūmān, wise and resolute, having heard Vibhīṣaṇa's words and honored the Brahmāstra, spoke as follows.
अस्मिन्नस्त्रहते सैन्ये वानराणां तरस्विनाम्। यो यो धारयते प्राणांस्तं तमाश्वासयावहे
"Among the monkey army struck by this weapon, let us comfort each one who still holds on to life."
तावुभौ युगपद् वीरौ हनूमद्राक्षसोत्तमौ। उल्काहस्तौ तदा रात्रौ रणशीर्षे विचेरतुः
Then those two heroes, Hanūmān and the foremost Rākṣasa, both holding firebrands in their hands, roamed together at the head of the battlefield during the night.
भिन्नलाङ्गूलहस्तोरुपादाङ्गुलिशिरोधरैः। स्रवद्भिः क्षतजं गात्रैः प्रस्रवद्भिः समन्ततः
They saw bodies with broken tails, hands, thighs, fingers, heads, and necks, with limbs oozing blood and wounds flowing all around.
पतितैः पर्वताकारैर्वानरैरभिसंवृताम्। शस्त्रैश्च पतितैर्दीप्तैर्ददृशाते वसुंधराम्
The earth appeared covered with fallen monkeys, mountain-like in form, and with shining weapons lying scattered everywhere.
सुग्रीवमङ्गदं नीलं शरभं गन्धमादनम्। जाम्बवन्तं सुषेणं च वेगदर्शिनमेव च
They saw Sugrīva, Aṅgada, Nīla, Śarabha, Gandhamādana, Jāmbavān, Suṣeṇa, and Vegadarśin.
मैन्दं नलं ज्योतिर्मुखं द्विविदं चापि वानरम्। विभीषणो हनूमांश्च ददृशाते हतान् रणे
Vibhīṣaṇa and Hanūmān also saw Mainda, Nala, Jyotirmukha, Dvivida, and other monkeys slain in battle.
सप्तषष्टिर्हताः कोट्यो वानराणां तरस्विनाम्। अह्नः पञ्चमशेषेण वल्लभेन स्वयंभुवः
Sixty-seven crores of swift vanaras were slain by the beloved of the Self-born, as the fifth part of the day remained.
