शरेणैकेन च हरीन् नव पञ्च च सप्त च। बिभेद समरे क्रुद्धो राक्षसान् सम्प्रहर्षयन्
In his wrath, he pierced monkeys in battle—one with a single arrow, others five, seven, or nine—delighting the rakshasas.
स शरैः सूर्यसंकाशैः शातकुम्भविभूषणैः। वानरान् समरे वीरः प्रममाथ सुदुर्जयः
That unconquerable hero, with arrows shining like the sun and adorned with gold, crushed the monkeys in battle.
ते भिन्नगात्राः समरे वानराः शरपीडिताः। पेतुर्मथितसंकल्पाः सुरैरिव महासुराः
Those monkeys, their bodies pierced and tormented by arrows in the fight, fell, their resolve shattered, like great asuras struck down by the gods.
ते तपन्तमिवादित्यं घोरैर्बाणगभस्तिभिः। अभ्यधावन्त संक्रुद्धाः संयुगे वानरर्षभाः
But the foremost monkeys, enraged, rushed at him in battle, as if at a blazing sun, with his dreadful arrows like rays.
ततस्तु वानराः सर्वे भिन्नदेहा विचेतसः। व्यथिता विद्रवन्ति स्म रुधिरेण समुक्षिताः
Then all the monkeys, their bodies wounded and minds bewildered, fled in pain, drenched in blood.
रामस्यार्थे पराक्रम्य वानरास्त्यक्तजीविताः। नर्दन्तस्तेऽनिवृत्तास्तु समरे सशिलायुधाः
Yet, for Rama's sake, the monkeys, having abandoned concern for their lives, roared and did not retreat in battle, fighting with stones as weapons.
ते द्रुमैः पर्वताग्रैश्च शिलाभिश्च प्लवंगमाः। अभ्यवर्षन्त समरे रावणिं समवस्थिताः
Those monkey warriors, standing firm in battle, showered Ravana with trees, mountain peaks, and rocks.
तं द्रुमाणां शिलानां च वर्षं प्राणहरं महत्। व्यपोहत महातेजा रावणिः समितिंजयः
But Ravana, the victorious and mighty, repelled that great, life-destroying rain of trees and rocks.
ततः पावकसंकाशैः शरैराशीविषोपमैः। वानराणामनीकानि बिभेद समरे प्रभुः
Then the lord, with arrows blazing like fire and resembling venomous serpents, pierced the ranks of the monkeys in battle.
अष्टादशशरैस्तीक्ष्णैः स विद्ध्वा गन्धमादनम्। विव्याध नवभिश्चैव नलं दूरादवस्थितम्
With eighteen sharp arrows he struck Gandhamadana, and with nine more, from afar, he wounded Nala.
सप्तभिस्तु महावीर्यो मैन्दं मर्मविदारणैः। पञ्चभिर्विशिखैश्चैव गजं विव्याध संयुगे
With seven mighty, marrow-piercing arrows he struck Mainda, and with five more, he wounded Gaja in the fight.
जाम्बवन्तं तु दशभिर्नीलं त्रिंशद्भिरेव च। सुग्रीवमृषभं चैव सोऽङ्गदं द्विविदं तथा
He struck Jambavan with ten arrows, Nila with thirty, and likewise Sugriva, Rishabha, Angada, and Dvivida.
घोरैर्दत्तवरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्निष्प्राणानकरोत् तदा। अन्यानपि तथा मुख्यान् वानरान् बहुभिः शरैः
With dreadful, boon-given, sharp arrows, he then made many other leading monkeys lifeless as well.
अर्दयामास संक्रुद्धः कालाग्निरिव मूर्च्छितः। स शरैः सूर्यसंकाशैः सुमुक्तैः शीघ्रगामिभिः
Enraged and stupefied like the fire of destruction, he assailed with arrows, brilliant as the sun, swiftly released.
वानराणामनीकानि निर्ममन्थ महारणे। आकुलां वानरीं सेनां शरजालेन पीडिताम्
He shattered the armies of the monkeys in the great battle, afflicting the monkey host, thrown into confusion, with a torrent of arrows.
हृष्टः स परया प्रीत्या ददर्श क्षतजोक्षिताम्। पुनरेव महातेजा राक्षसेन्द्रात्मजो बली
Filled with supreme delight, he beheld them drenched in blood; and again, the mighty and radiant son of the king of the rakshasas,
संसृज्य बाणवर्षं च शस्त्रवर्षं च दारुणम्। ममर्द वानरानीकं परितस्त्विन्द्रजिद् बली
Unleashing a rain of arrows and a fierce shower of weapons, Indrajit crushed the monkey troops all around.
स्वसैन्यमुत्सृज्य समेत्य तूर्णं महाहवे वानरवाहिनीषु। अदृश्यमानः शरजालमुग्रं ववर्ष नीलाम्बुधरो यथाम्बु
Leaving his own army, he swiftly joined the monkey forces in the great battle; unseen, he poured a fierce shower of arrows, like a dark cloud releasing water.
ते शक्रजिद्बाणविशीर्णदेहा मायाहता विस्वरमुन्नदन्तः। रणे निपेतुर्हरयोऽद्रिकल्पा यथेन्द्रवज्राभिहता नगेन्द्राः
Their bodies shattered by Indrajit's arrows, struck by illusion, they cried out in confusion; the monkey heroes fell in battle, like mountains struck by Indra's thunderbolt.
ते केवलं संददृशुः शिताग्रान् बाणान् रणे वानरवाहिनीषु। मायाविगूढं च सुरेन्द्रशत्रुं न चात्र तं राक्षसमप्यपश्यन्
They saw only sharp-pointed arrows among the monkey forces in battle; but the enemy of the gods, concealed by illusion, was not seen, nor did they see that rakshasa there.
ततः स रक्षोधिपतिर्महात्मा सर्वा दिशो बाणगणैः शिताग्रैः। प्रच्छादयामास रविप्रकाशै- र्विदारयामास च वानरेन्द्रान्
Then that great-souled lord of the rakshasas covered all directions with groups of sharp arrows, radiant as the sun, and tore apart the monkey chiefs.
स शूलनिस्त्रिंशपरश्वधानि व्याविद्धदीप्तानलसप्रभाणि। सविस्फुलिङ्गोज्ज्वलपावकानि ववर्ष तीव्रं प्लवगेन्द्रसैन्ये
He rained down spears, swords, axes, blazing like fiery flames, sparkling and brilliant, upon the army of monkey chiefs.
ततो ज्वलनसंकाशैर्बाणैर्वानरयूथपाः। ताडिताः शक्रजिद्बाणैः प्रफुल्ला इव किंशुकाः
Then, struck by Indrajit's arrows, glowing like fire, the monkey leaders appeared like blossoming kimshuka trees.
तेऽन्योन्यमभिसर्पन्तो निनदन्तश्च विस्वरम्। राक्षसेन्द्रास्त्रनिर्भिन्ना निपेतुर्वानरर्षभाः
Rushing at each other and crying out in confusion, pierced by the weapons of the king of the rakshasas, the foremost monkeys fell.
उदीक्षमाणा गगनं केचिन्नेत्रेषु ताडिताः। शरैर्विविशुरन्योन्यं पेतुश्च जगतीतले
Some, gazing at the sky, struck in the eyes by arrows, entered into one another and fell to the earth.
हनूमन्तं च सुग्रीवमङ्गदं गन्धमादनम्। जाम्बवन्तं सुषेणं च वेगदर्शिनमेव च
Hanuman, Sugriva, Angada, Gandhamadana, Jambavan, Sushena, and also Vegadarshi,
मैन्दं च द्विविदं नीलं गवाक्षं गवयं तथा। केसरिं हरिलोमानं विद्युद्दंष्ट्रं च वानरम्
Mainda, Dvivida, Nila, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Kesari, Hariloma, Vidyuddamshtra the monkey,
सूर्याननं ज्योतिर्मुखं तथा दधिमुखं हरिम्। पावकाक्षं नलं चैव कुमुदं चैव वानरम्
Suryanana, Jyotirmukha, Dadhimukha the monkey, Pavakaksha, Nala, and Kumuda the monkey,
प्रासैः शूलैः शितैर्बाणैरिन्द्रजिन्मन्त्रसंहितैः। विव्याध हरिशार्दूलान् सर्वांस्तान् राक्षसोत्तमः
With spears, lances, sharp arrows, empowered by Indrajit's mantras, that foremost rakshasa pierced all those tiger-like monkeys.
स वै गदाभिर्हरियूथमुख्यान् निर्भिद्य बाणैस्तपनीयवर्णैः। ववर्ष रामं शरवृष्टिजालैः सलक्ष्मणं भास्कररश्मिकल्पैः
He struck the chief monkey leaders with maces and arrows, golden-hued; he showered Rama and Lakshmana with torrents of arrows, like rays of the sun.
