मोक्तुं तद्बन्धनं घोरं यक्षगन्धर्वपन्नगैः। तन्न जाने प्रभावैर्वा मायया मोहनेन वा
That dreadful bondage could not be loosened by yakṣas, gandharvas, or serpents; I do not know whether it was by their power, or by illusion and delusion, that they were freed.
शरबन्धाद् विमुक्तौ तौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। ये योधा निर्गताः शूरा राक्षसा मम शासनात्
Freed from the bondage of arrows, those brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, have returned; and the warriors, the valiant rākṣasas who went forth by my command—
ते सर्वे निहता युद्धे वानरैः सुमहाबलैः। तं न पश्याम्यहं युद्धे योऽद्य रामं सलक्ष्मणम्
All of them have been slain in battle by the exceedingly strong monkeys; I do not see anyone today in battle who can destroy Rāma together with Lakṣmaṇa,
नाशयेत् सबलं वीरं ससुग्रीवं विभीषणम्। अहो सुबलवान् रामो महदस्त्रबलं च वै
Along with his army, the heroic Sugrīva, and Vibhīṣaṇa. Truly, Rāma is very powerful, and his mastery of weapons is indeed great.
यस्य विक्रममासाद्य राक्षसा निधनं गताः। तं मन्ये राघवं वीरं नारायणमनामयम्
Having encountered his valor, the rākṣasas have met their end; I consider that heroic Rāghava to be Nārāyaṇa himself, free from all harm.
तद्भयाद्धि पुरी लङ्का पिहितद्वारतोरणा। अप्रमत्तैश्च सर्वत्र गुल्मे रक्ष्या पुरी त्वियम्
Out of fear of him, the city of Laṅkā has its gates and arches closed; and everywhere, this city must be guarded by ever-vigilant troops.
अशोकवनिका चैव यत्र सीताभिरक्ष्यते। निष्क्रमो वा प्रवेशो वा ज्ञातव्यः सर्वदैव नः
And especially the Aśoka grove, where Sītā is guarded—at all times, we must know of any exit or entry there.
यत्र यत्र भवेद् गुल्मस्तत्र तत्र पुनः पुनः। सर्वतश्चापि तिष्ठध्वं स्वैः स्वैः परिवृता बलैः
Wherever there is a garrison, there again and again, and everywhere, you must stand, each with your own forces surrounding you.
द्रष्टव्यं च पदं तेषां वानराणां निशाचराः। प्रदोषे वार्धरात्रे वा प्रत्यूषे वापि सर्वशः
The movements of the monkeys must be observed by the night-stalking rākṣasas, whether at dusk, midnight, or dawn—at all times.
नावज्ञा तत्र कर्तव्या वानरेषु कदाचन। द्विषतां बलमुद्युक्तमापतत् किं स्थितं यथा
One must never show disrespect towards the monkeys; what enemy force, though prepared and advancing, has remained standing?
ततस्ते राक्षसाः सर्वे श्रुत्वा लङ्काधिपस्य तत्। वचनं सर्वमातिष्ठन् यथावत् तु महाबलाः
Then all the mighty Rākṣasas, having heard those words of the lord of Laṅkā, carried them out exactly as instructed.
तान् सर्वान् हि समादिश्य रावणो राक्षसाधिपः। मन्युशल्यं वहन् दीनः प्रविवेश स्वमालयम्
Having given all those commands, Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, burdened with the arrow of anger and dejected, entered his own palace.
ततः स संदीपितकोपवह्नि- र्निशाचराणामधिपो महाबलः। तदेव पुत्रव्यसनं विचिन्तयन् मुहुर्मुहुश्चैव तदा विनिःश्वसन्
Then that mighty lord of the night-walkers, his fire of wrath blazing, kept thinking again and again of his son's calamity, sighing deeply at that time.

Hear now the seventy-third sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
ततो हतान् राक्षसपुङ्गवांस्तान् देवान्तकादित्रिशिरोऽतिकायान्। रक्षोगणास्तत्र हतावशिष्टा- स्ते रावणाय त्वरिताः शशंसुः
Then the remaining Rākṣasas, after the chiefs—Devāntaka, Triśiras, Atikāya, and others—had been slain, quickly reported to Rāvaṇa.
ततो हतांस्तान् सहसा निशम्य राजा महाबाष्पपरिप्लुताक्षः। पुत्रक्षयं भ्रातृवधं च घोरं विचिन्त्य राजा विपुलं प्रदध्यौ
Then, suddenly hearing of their deaths, the king, his eyes overflowing with great tears, reflected deeply on the terrible loss of his sons and brothers.
ततस्तु राजानमुदीक्ष्य दीनं शोकार्णवे सम्परिपुप्लुवानम्। रथर्षभो राक्षसराजसूनु- स्तमिन्द्रजिद् वाक्यमिदं बभाषे
Then, seeing the king, dejected and submerged in an ocean of grief, the best of charioteers, Indrajit, son of the Rākṣasa king, spoke these words to him.
न तात मोहं परिगन्तुमर्हसे यत्रेन्द्रजिज्जीवति नैर्ऋतेश। नेन्द्रारिबाणाभिहतो हि कश्चित् प्राणान् समर्थः समरेऽभिपातुम्
Father, you should not give in to delusion while Indrajit, the lord of the night-dwellers, still lives; for no one struck by Indra's enemy's arrows is able to keep his life in battle.
पश्याद्य रामं सह लक्ष्मणेन मद्बाणनिर्भिन्नविकीर्णदेहम्। गतायुषं भूमितले शयानं शितैः शरैराचितसर्वगात्रम्
Today, see Rāma together with Lakṣmaṇa, their bodies shattered and torn by my arrows, lying lifeless on the ground, their limbs entirely covered with sharp shafts.
इमां प्रतिज्ञां शृणु शक्रशत्रोः सुनिश्चितां पौरुषदैवयुक्ताम्। अद्यैव रामं सह लक्ष्मणेन संतर्पयिष्यामि शरैरमोघैः
Hear this vow of mine, certain and joined with both valor and destiny: today itself I will satisfy you by striking down Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa with unfailing arrows.
अद्येन्द्रवैवस्वतविष्णुरुद्र- साध्याश्च वैश्वानरचन्द्रसूर्याः। द्रक्ष्यन्ति मे विक्रममप्रमेयं विष्णोरिवोग्रं बलियज्ञवाटे
Today, Indra, Yama, Viṣṇu, Rudra, the Sādhyas, Agni, the Moon, and the Sun shall witness my immeasurable prowess, fierce as Viṣṇu's at the sacrifice of Bali.
स एवमुक्त्वा त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रु- रापृच्छ्य राजानमदीनसत्त्वः। समारुरोहानिलतुल्यवेगं रथं खरश्रेष्ठसमाधियुक्तम्
Having spoken thus, the enemy of the lord of the gods, Indrajit, whose spirit was undaunted, took leave of the king and mounted his chariot, swift as the wind and yoked to the best of steeds.
समास्थाय महातेजा रथं हरिरथोपमम्। जगाम सहसा तत्र यत्र युद्धमरिंदमः
Possessed of great energy, he ascended his chariot, equal to the chariot of the gods, and swiftly went to the place where the subduer of foes was fighting.
तं प्रस्थितं महात्मानमनुजग्मुर्महाबलाः। संहर्षमाणा बहवो धनुःप्रवरपाणयः
Many mighty warriors, delighted and armed with excellent bows, followed that great-souled one as he set out.
गजस्कन्धगताः केचित् केचित् परमवाजिभिः। व्याघ्रवृश्चिकमार्जारखरोष्ट्रैश्च भुजङ्गमैः
Some rode on elephants, some on supreme horses, and others on tigers, scorpions, cats, donkeys, camels, and serpents.
वराहैः श्वापदैः सिंहैर्जम्बुकैः पर्वतोपमैः। काकहंसमयूरैश्च राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः
With boars, wild beasts, lions, jackals as large as mountains, crows, swans, and peacocks, the Rākṣasas of terrifying valor advanced.
प्रासपट्टिशनिस्त्रिंशपरश्वधगदाधराः। भुशुण्डिमुद्गरायष्टिशतघ्नीपरिघायुधाः
Armed with spears, pikes, swords, axes, maces, clubs, slings, cudgels, iron rods, and bars, they marched forth.
स शङ्खनिनदैः पूर्णैर्भेरीणां चापि निःस्वनैः। जगाम त्रिदशेन्द्रारिराजिं वेगेन वीर्यवान्
With the full sounds of conch shells and the resounding blasts of drums, the mighty and valorous enemy of the gods advanced swiftly toward the battlefield.
स शङ्खशशिवर्णेन छत्रेण रिपुसूदनः। रराज प्रतिपूर्णेन नभश्चन्द्रमसा यथा
The destroyer of foes shone with a parasol white as a conch shell, filled to its brim, like the moon filling the sky.
वीज्यमानस्ततो वीरो हैमैर्हेमविभूषणः। चारुचामरमुख्यैश्च मुख्यः सर्वधनुष्मताम्
Then the hero, adorned with golden ornaments, was fanned by splendid golden fans, and stood foremost among all bowmen.
