For a moment he lay as if lifeless; then, suddenly regaining his senses, the enemy of the gods, leaping up, his color like a twilight cloud, struck the son of the lord of waters.
He fell unconscious to the ground, but after a moment, rising again with his senses restored, he grasped that very mace, massive as a mountain, and struck in battle.
That fierce mace, approaching the body of the dreadful enemy of gods and priests, shattered his chest, and much blood flowed, as water from a mountain king.
He rushed swiftly toward the mace of that great-souled one, seized the terrible mace, and brandished it again and again.
The great-souled one struck the intoxicated Anika on the battlefield; shattered by his own mace, his ten eyes destroyed.
Then, like a maddened mountain struck by a thunderbolt, he fell to the earth, his eyes shattered, life and spirit departed; when that rakshasa fell, the rakshasa army fled.
When that brother of Ravana was slain, the army of the night-stalkers, vast as the ocean, abandoned their weapons and fled, seeking only to save their lives, like a broken sea.
The seventy-first sarga is to be heard.
Seeing his own army distressed, tumultuous and hair-raising, and his brothers, equal in valor to Indra, slain,
And seeing also his uncles fallen in battle, and his two brothers, the foremost rakshasas, maddened by war and intoxication,
The mighty Atikaya, radiant, granted a boon by Brahma, destroyer of the pride of gods and demons, became enraged in battle.
He, shining like a mass of a thousand suns, mounted his chariot and, enemy of Indra, rushed toward the vanaras.
Then, drawing his bow, adorned with a crown and polished earrings, he announced his name and roared with a great sound.
With his lion-like roar, his proclamation of his name, and the terrible twang of his bowstring, he struck terror into the hearts of the monkeys.
Seeing the majesty of his form—Kumbhakarṇa himself arisen—all the monkeys, seized by fear, clung to one another for refuge.
Beholding his appearance, as when Viṣṇu took three strides, those monkey warriors, out of fear, scattered in all directions.
Encountering Atikāya, the monkeys, their minds bewildered, sought shelter in Lakṣmaṇa’s elder brother on the battlefield.
Then the descendant of Kakutstha saw Atikāya, standing on his chariot, mountain-like, armed with a bow, roaring from afar like a dark thundercloud.
Seeing that mighty figure, Rāghava was greatly astonished; after consoling the monkeys, he spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa.
Who is this, mountain-like, armed with a bow, with eyes like a lion, standing in a vast chariot yoked to a thousand horses?
He who shines, surrounded by sharp spears, very keen javelins and darts, blazing like fire—just as Maheśvara is surrounded by spirits.
He who is adorned with chariot-lances gleaming like tongues of Time, shines forth as a raincloud with flashes of lightning.
His bows, all with golden backs, adorn his splendid chariot, like Indra’s rainbow gracing the sky.
This tiger among rākṣasas, illuminating the battlefield, approaches—the foremost of chariot-warriors, with a chariot radiant as the sun.
With a banner mounted on his chariot like Rāhu, he shines, illuminating the ten directions with arrows bright as sunbeams.
His bow, triple-banded, thundering like a cloud, adorned with gold, shines like Indra’s own bow.
With banner and streamers, with a rear platform, this great chariot, drawn by four horses, resounds like the rumble of clouds.
Twenty, ten, and eight quivers are mounted on his chariot, along with mighty bows and bowstrings golden-yellow in hue.
And two blazing swords at his sides, adorned on either flank, each with four handles and clearly visible ten-fingered hilts.
With a red-throated bowstring, steadfast, massive as a great mountain, he is Time itself, with a vast, gaping mouth, like the sun amidst the clouds.
