Now, truly, I am not myself, for my right arm, on which I relied, has fallen; I do not fear gods or demons.
How could such a hero, destroyer of the pride of gods and demons, like the fire of time, be slain today in battle by Rāghava?
He whom even the blow of a thunderbolt could never harm—how is it that, wounded by Rāma’s arrows, you now lie asleep upon the earth?
These hosts of gods, together with the sages, stand in the sky; seeing you slain in battle, they cry out in delight.
Surely today, the monkeys, overjoyed and having achieved their aim, will storm all the fortresses and gates of Lanka here.
I have no concern for the kingdom, nor for Sita—what shall I do with her? With Kumbhakarna gone, I have no desire to live.
If I do not slay Rama, my brother's killer, in battle, then surely death is better for me than this wasted life.
Today itself I will go to the place where my younger brother is, for I cannot endure living even a moment, having abandoned my brothers.
The gods will surely mock me, seeing me who first wronged them; how shall I conquer Indra, now that you, Kumbhakarna, are slain?
Thus, this good counsel of Vibhishana has come to me now—yet, out of ignorance, I did not heed that great soul's advice.
Because I ignored Vibhishana's words, this destruction of Kumbhakarna and Prahasta has arisen, and it brings me terrible shame.
This is the bitter fruit of my deed, bringing me sorrow: that I drove away the righteous and illustrious Vibhishana.
Thus, with his heart greatly troubled, lamenting most pitiably, Ravana, deeply afflicted, fell down beside his brother Kumbhakarna, having learned that the foe of Indra was slain.
Hear now the sixty-ninth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Hearing Ravana, that wicked soul, lamenting in grief, Trishira spoke these words.
Indeed, our mighty hero, the best among fathers, has been slain; but noble men, O King, do not lament as you do.
Surely, you are sufficient even for the three worlds, O Lord; so why do you grieve for yourself like an ordinary man?
You possess a power granted by Brahma, armor, arrows, and a bow; your chariot, joined with a thousand mules, resounds like a thundercloud.
You have often struck down gods and demons with your weapons; so, equipped with all arms, you should subdue Rama.
Stay as you wish, great king; I myself will go forth to battle and will sweep away your enemies as Garuda does serpents.
Just as Shambara was struck down by the king of gods, and Naraka by Vishnu, so today Rama shall lie slain by me in battle.
Hearing Triśiras's words, Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, felt as if he had been reborn, impelled by fate.
Hearing Triśiras's words, Devāntaka, Narāntaka, and the radiant Atikāya became filled with joy for battle.
Then, proclaiming 'I am foremost!' with mighty roars, the heroic sons of Rāvaṇa, equal in valor to Indra, bellowed forth.
All of them moved through the sky, all skilled in magical arts, all destroyers of the pride of the gods, all intoxicated by battle.
All were endowed with great strength, all possessed widespread fame; never were any of them heard to be defeated in battle.
Even by the gods, gandharvas, kinnaras, and mighty serpents, all these heroes, skilled in weapons and battle, of supreme knowledge and granted boons, could not be overcome.
Surrounded by his sons, radiant as the sun, destroyers of the splendor of enemy forces, the king shone like Indra among the gods, encircled by those who broke the pride of great dānavas.
He embraced his sons, adorned them with ornaments, and, with auspicious blessings, sent them forth to battle.
Rāvaṇa also sent his brothers, maddened and wild for battle, to protect his sons in the conflict.
