तद् रामबाणाभिहतं पपात रक्षःशिरः पर्वतसंनिकाशम्। बभञ्ज चर्यागृहगोपुराणि प्राकारमुच्चं तमपातयच्च
That rākṣasa’s head, struck by Rāma’s arrow and mountain-like, fell down, shattering hermitages and gateways, and brought down the high rampart.
तच्चातिकायं हिमवत् प्रकाशं रक्षस्तदा तोयनिधौ पपात। ग्राहान् परान् मीनवरान् भुजंगमान् ममर्द भूमिं च तथा विवेश
That enormous head, shining like Himavat, fell into the ocean; it crushed crocodiles, great fish, and serpents, and entered the earth as well.
तस्मिन् हते ब्राह्मणदेवशत्रौ महाबले संयति कुम्भकर्णे। चचाल भूर्भूमिधराश्च सर्वे हर्षाच्च देवास्तुमुलं प्रणेदुः
When Kumbhakarṇa, the mighty foe of Brahmins and gods, was slain in battle, the earth and all its mountains trembled, and the gods, overjoyed, resounded with tumultuous praise.
ततस्तु देवर्षिमहर्षिपन्नगाः सुराश्च भूतानि सुपर्णगुह्यकाः। सयक्षगन्धर्वगणा नभोगताः प्रहर्षिता रामपराक्रमेण
Then the gods, seers, great sages, serpents, divine beings, spirits, eagles, and hidden ones, along with yakṣas and gandharvas in the sky, rejoiced at Rāma’s valor.
ततस्तु ते तस्य वधेन भूरिणा मनस्विनो नैर्ऋतराजबान्धवाः। विनेदुरुच्चैर्व्यथिता रघूत्तमं हरिं समीक्ष्यैव यथा मतंगजाः
Then, because of his great death, the wise kinsmen of the lord of the rākṣasas wailed loudly in distress, gazing at Rāma, the foremost of the Raghus, just as elephants mourn.
स देवलोकस्य तमो निहत्य सूर्यो यथा राहुमुखाद् विमुक्तः। तथा व्यभासीद्धरिसैन्यमध्ये निहत्य रामो युधि कुम्भकर्णम्
Just as the sun, freed from the mouth of Rāhu, dispels the darkness of the world of the gods, so too did Rāma, having slain Kumbhakarṇa in battle, shine forth in the midst of the army of monkeys.
प्रहर्षमीयुर्बहवश्च वानराः प्रबुद्धपद्मप्रतिमैरिवाननैः। अपूजयन् राघवमिष्टभागिनं हते रिपौ भीमबले नृपात्मजम्
Many of the monkeys, their faces radiant like awakened lotuses, were filled with joy; they honored Rāghava, the bringer of blessings, after the mighty and fearsome son of the king, their enemy, had been slain.
स कुम्भकर्णं सुरसैन्यमर्दनं महत्सु युद्धेषु कदाचनाजितम्। ननन्द हत्वा भरताग्रजो रणे महासुरं वृत्रमिवामराधिपः
He, Bharata’s elder brother, rejoiced after slaying in battle Kumbhakarṇa, the destroyer of the armies of the gods, undefeated in great wars—just as the lord of the immortals rejoiced after killing the great demon Vṛtra.

कुम्भकर्णं हतं दृष्ट्वा राघवेण महात्मना। राक्षसा राक्षसेन्द्राय रावणाय न्यवेदयन्
Seeing Kumbhakarṇa slain by the great-souled Rāghava, the rākṣasas reported it to Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas.
राजन् स कालसंकाशः संयुक्तः कालकर्मणा। विद्राव्य वानरीं सेनां भक्षयित्वा च वानरान्
O King, he, resembling Death itself and joined with the work of Death, scattered the army of monkeys and devoured many of them.
प्रतपित्वा मुहूर्तं तु प्रशान्तो रामतेजसा। कायेनार्धप्रविष्टेन समुद्रं भीमदर्शनम्
After scorching the enemy for a time, he was subdued by Rāma’s splendor; with half his body sunk into the dreadful sea, he became still.
निकृत्तनासाकर्णेन विक्षरद्रुधिरेण च। रुद्ध्वा द्वारं शरीरेण लङ्कायाः पर्वतोपमः
His nose and ears cut off, blood streaming, he blocked the gate of Laṅkā with his mountain-like body.
कुम्भकर्णस्तव भ्राता काकुत्स्थशरपीडितः। अगण्डभूतो विवृतो दावदग्ध इव द्रुमः
Kumbhakarṇa, your brother, afflicted by Kākutstha’s arrows, lay disfigured and exposed, like a tree scorched by fire.
श्रुत्वा विनिहतं संख्ये कुम्भकर्णं महाबलम्। रावणः शोकसंतप्तो मुमोह च पपात च
Hearing that mighty Kumbhakarṇa had been slain in battle, Rāvaṇa, tormented by grief, fainted and fell.
पितृव्यं निहतं श्रुत्वा देवान्तकनरान्तकौ। त्रिशिराश्चातिकायश्च रुरुदुः शोकपीडिताः
Hearing that their uncle had been killed, Devāntaka, Narāntaka, Triśiras, and Atikāya wept, overcome by sorrow.
भ्रातरं निहतं श्रुत्वा रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। महोदरमहापार्श्वौ शोकाक्रान्तौ बभूवतुः
Hearing that their brother had been slain by Rāma, whose deeds are unblemished, Mahodara and Mahāpārśva were seized by grief.
ततः कृच्छ्रात् समासाद्य संज्ञां राक्षसपुङ्गवः। कुम्भकर्णवधाद् दीनो विललापाकुलेन्द्रियः
Then, after great difficulty regaining consciousness, the foremost of rākṣasas, stricken by Kumbhakarṇa’s death, lamented with senses bewildered.
हा वीर रिपुदर्पघ्न कुम्भकर्ण महाबल। त्वं मां विहाय वै दैवाद् यातोऽसि यमसादनम्
Alas, mighty Kumbhakarṇa, destroyer of enemy pride, hero—by fate you have left me and gone to the abode of Yama.
मम शल्यमनुद्धृत्य बान्धवानां महाबल। शत्रुसैन्यं प्रताप्यैकः क्व मां संत्यज्य गच्छसि
Having removed the thorn from my side and those of our kin, mighty one, and scorched the enemy army alone, where do you go, leaving me behind?
इदानीं खल्वहं नास्मि यस्य मे पतितो भुजः। दक्षिणोऽयं समाश्रित्य न बिभेमि सुरासुरात्
Now, truly, I am not myself, for my right arm, on which I relied, has fallen; I do not fear gods or demons.
कथमेवंविधो वीरो देवदानवदर्पहा। कालाग्निप्रतिमो ह्यद्य राघवेण रणे हतः
How could such a hero, destroyer of the pride of gods and demons, like the fire of time, be slain today in battle by Rāghava?
यस्य ते वज्रनिष्पेषो न कुर्याद् व्यसनं सदा। स कथं रामबाणार्तः प्रसुप्तोऽसि महीतले
He whom even the blow of a thunderbolt could never harm—how is it that, wounded by Rāma’s arrows, you now lie asleep upon the earth?
एते देवगणाः सार्धमृषिभिर्गगने स्थिताः। निहतं त्वां रणे दृष्ट्वा निनदन्ति प्रहर्षिताः
These hosts of gods, together with the sages, stand in the sky; seeing you slain in battle, they cry out in delight.
ध्रुवमद्यैव संहृष्टा लब्धलक्षाः प्लवंगमाः। आरोक्ष्यन्तीह दुर्गाणि लङ्काद्वाराणि सर्वशः
Surely today, the monkeys, overjoyed and having achieved their aim, will storm all the fortresses and gates of Lanka here.
राज्येन नास्ति मे कार्यं किं करिष्यामि सीतया। कुम्भकर्णविहीनस्य जीविते नास्ति मे मतिः
I have no concern for the kingdom, nor for Sita—what shall I do with her? With Kumbhakarna gone, I have no desire to live.
यद्यहं भ्रातृहन्तारं न हन्मि युधि राघवम्। ननु मे मरणं श्रेयो न चेदं व्यर्थजीवितम्
If I do not slay Rama, my brother's killer, in battle, then surely death is better for me than this wasted life.
अद्यैव तं गमिष्यामि देशं यत्रानुजो मम। नहि भ्रातॄन् समुत्सृज्य क्षणं जीवितुमुत्सहे
Today itself I will go to the place where my younger brother is, for I cannot endure living even a moment, having abandoned my brothers.
देवा हि मां हसिष्यन्ति दृष्ट्वा पूर्वापकारिणम्। कथमिन्द्रं जयिष्यामि कुम्भकर्ण हते त्वयि
The gods will surely mock me, seeing me who first wronged them; how shall I conquer Indra, now that you, Kumbhakarna, are slain?
तदिदं मामनुप्राप्तं विभीषणवचः शुभम्। यदज्ञानान्मया तस्य न गृहीतं महात्मनः
Thus, this good counsel of Vibhishana has come to me now—yet, out of ignorance, I did not heed that great soul's advice.
