दर्शयेक्ष्वाकुशार्दूल वीर्यं गात्रेषु मेऽनघ। ततस्त्वां भक्षयिष्यामि दृष्टपौरुषविक्रमम्
Show your strength, tiger among the Ikṣvākus, upon my body, O sinless one! Then, having witnessed your valor, I will devour you.
स कुम्भकर्णस्य वचो निशम्य रामः सुपुङ्खान् विससर्ज बाणान्। तैराहतो वज्रसमप्रवेगै- र्न चुक्षुभे न व्यथते सुरारिः
Hearing Kumbhakarṇa's words, Rāma released well-feathered arrows; struck by them, swift as thunderbolts, the enemy of the gods neither wavered nor was disturbed.
यैः सायकैः सालवरा निकृत्ता वाली हतो वानरपुङ्गवश्च। ते कुम्भकर्णस्य तदा शरीरं वज्रोपमा न व्यथयाम्प्रचक्रुः
Those very arrows with which Vāli, the foremost of monkeys, was slain and mighty trees were cut down, now struck Kumbhakarṇa's body, but, being like adamant, they did not trouble him.
स वारिधारा इव सायकांस्तान् पिबन् शरीरेण महेन्द्रशत्रुः। जघान रामस्य शरप्रवेगं व्याविध्य तं मुद्गरमुग्रवेगम्
That enemy of Indra, drinking up those arrows with his body as if they were streams of water, brandished his terrible, swift mace and struck at Rāma's arrow assault.
ततस्तु रक्षः क्षतजानुलिप्तं वित्रासनं देवमहाचमूनाम्। व्याविध्य तं मुद्गरमुग्रवेगं विद्रावयामास चमूं हरीणाम्
Then that rākṣasa, with blood-smeared knees, terrifying the great armies of the gods, brandished his terrible, swift mace and routed the army of monkeys.
वायव्यमादाय ततोऽपरास्त्रं रामः प्रचिक्षेप निशाचराय। समुद्गरं तेन जहार बाहुं स कृत्तबाहुस्तुमुलं ननाद
Then Rāma took up the wind-missile and hurled another weapon at the night-wanderer; with it he severed his arm along with the mace, and the one-armed giant roared fiercely.
स तस्य बाहुर्गिरिशृङ्गकल्पः समुद्गरो राघवबाणकृत्तः। पपात तस्मिन् हरिराजसैन्ये जघान तां वानरवाहिनीं च
That arm of his, like a mountain peak, with the mace, cut off by Rāghava's arrow, fell among the monkey army and struck down the monkey troops.
ते वानरा भग्नहतावशेषाः पर्यन्तमाश्रित्य तदा विषण्णाः। प्रपीडिताङ्गा ददृशुः सुघोरं नरेन्द्ररक्षोऽधिपसंनिपातम्
Those remaining vanaras, shattered and wounded, then took refuge at the edge, dejected; their bodies crushed, they beheld that dreadful clash between the king of men and the lord of the rākṣasas.
स कुम्भकर्णोऽस्त्रनिकृत्तबाहु- र्महासिकृत्ताग्र इवाचलेन्द्रः। उत्पाटयामास करेण वृक्षं ततोऽभिदुद्राव रणे नरेन्द्रम्
Kumbhakarṇa, his arm severed by a divine weapon—like a great mountain peak cut off by a mighty sword—uprooted a tree with his hand and then charged at the king of men in battle.
तं तस्य बाहुं सहतालवृक्षं समुद्यतं पन्नगभोगकल्पम्। ऐन्द्रास्त्रयुक्तेन जघान रामो बाणेन जाम्बूनदचित्रितेन
Rāma struck that upraised arm of his, which held a palm tree and resembled the coil of a serpent, with an arrow adorned with gold, empowered by Indra’s missile.
स कुम्भकर्णस्य भुजो निकृत्तः पपात भूमौ गिरिसंनिकाशः। विचेष्टमानो निजघान वृक्षान् शैलान् शिलावानरराक्षसांश्च
That arm of Kumbhakarṇa, severed, fell to the ground like a mountain; thrashing about, he struck down trees, rocks, and both vanaras and rākṣasas.
तं छिन्नबाहुं समवेक्ष्य रामः समापतन्तं सहसा नदन्तम्। द्वावर्धचन्द्रौ निशितौ प्रगृह्य चिच्छेद पादौ युधि राक्षसस्य
Seeing him, with his arm cut off, suddenly rushing and roaring, Rāma seized two sharp half-moon arrows and, in battle, severed the rākṣasa’s legs.
तौ तस्य पादौ प्रदिशो दिशश्च गिरेर्गुहाश्चैव महार्णवं च। लङ्कां च सेनां कपिराक्षसानां विनादयन्तौ विनिपेततुश्च
Those two legs of his, resounding as they fell, crashed down upon the quarters, the directions, the mountain caves, the great ocean, Laṅkā, and the armies of monkeys and rākṣasas.
निकृत्तबाहुर्विनिकृत्तपादो विदार्य वक्त्रं वडवामुखाभम्। दुद्राव रामं सहसाभिगर्जन् राहुर्यथा चन्द्रमिवान्तरिक्षे
His arm and legs severed, his mouth gaping like the maw of death, he rushed at Rāma with a sudden roar, like Rāhu charging at the moon in the sky.
अपूरयत् तस्य मुखं शिताग्रै रामः शरैर्हेमपिनद्धपुङ्खैः। सम्पूर्णवक्त्रो न शशाक वक्तुं चुकूज कृच्छ्रेण मुमूर्च्छ चापि
Rāma filled his mouth with sharp-tipped arrows, their shafts bound with gold; his mouth completely filled, he could not speak, groaned with difficulty, and then lost consciousness.
अथाददे सूर्यमरीचिकल्पं स ब्रह्मदण्डान्तककालकल्पम्। अरिष्टमैन्द्रं निशितं सुपुङ्खं रामः शरं मारुततुल्यवेगम्
Then Rāma took up an arrow like a sunbeam, resembling the staff of Brahmā, Death, and Time; the mighty, sharp, well-feathered Indra-missile, swift as the wind.
तं वज्रजाम्बूनदचारुपुङ्खं प्रदीप्तसूर्यज्वलनप्रकाशम्। महेन्द्रवज्राशनितुल्यवेगं रामः प्रचिक्षेप निशाचराय
That arrow, with a shining golden shaft like a thunderbolt, blazing like the sun and fire, and with the speed of Indra’s thunderbolt, Rāma hurled at the night-wandering rākṣasa.
स सायको राघवबाहुचोदितो दिशःस्वभासा दश सम्प्रकाशयन्। विधूमवैश्वानरभीमदर्शनो जगाम शक्राशनिभीमविक्रमः
That arrow, launched from Rāghava’s arm, illuminated the ten directions with its radiance; appearing like smokeless fire, it advanced with the terrifying force of Indra’s thunderbolt.
स तन्महापर्वतकूटसंनिभं सुवृत्तदंष्ट्रं चलचारुकुण्डलम्। चकर्त रक्षोऽधिपतेः शिरस्तदा यथैव वृत्रस्य पुरा पुरंदरः
That arrow then severed the head of the lord of rākṣasas, massive as a mountain peak, with well-formed fangs and beautiful, trembling earrings—just as Purandara once struck down Vṛtra.
कुम्भकर्णशिरो भाति कुण्डलालंकृतं महत्। आदित्येऽभ्युदिते रात्रौ मध्यस्थ इव चन्द्रमाः
Kumbhakarṇa’s head, adorned with earrings and immense, shone like the moon in the midst of the night when the sun has risen.
तद् रामबाणाभिहतं पपात रक्षःशिरः पर्वतसंनिकाशम्। बभञ्ज चर्यागृहगोपुराणि प्राकारमुच्चं तमपातयच्च
That rākṣasa’s head, struck by Rāma’s arrow and mountain-like, fell down, shattering hermitages and gateways, and brought down the high rampart.
तच्चातिकायं हिमवत् प्रकाशं रक्षस्तदा तोयनिधौ पपात। ग्राहान् परान् मीनवरान् भुजंगमान् ममर्द भूमिं च तथा विवेश
That enormous head, shining like Himavat, fell into the ocean; it crushed crocodiles, great fish, and serpents, and entered the earth as well.
तस्मिन् हते ब्राह्मणदेवशत्रौ महाबले संयति कुम्भकर्णे। चचाल भूर्भूमिधराश्च सर्वे हर्षाच्च देवास्तुमुलं प्रणेदुः
When Kumbhakarṇa, the mighty foe of Brahmins and gods, was slain in battle, the earth and all its mountains trembled, and the gods, overjoyed, resounded with tumultuous praise.
ततस्तु देवर्षिमहर्षिपन्नगाः सुराश्च भूतानि सुपर्णगुह्यकाः। सयक्षगन्धर्वगणा नभोगताः प्रहर्षिता रामपराक्रमेण
Then the gods, seers, great sages, serpents, divine beings, spirits, eagles, and hidden ones, along with yakṣas and gandharvas in the sky, rejoiced at Rāma’s valor.
ततस्तु ते तस्य वधेन भूरिणा मनस्विनो नैर्ऋतराजबान्धवाः। विनेदुरुच्चैर्व्यथिता रघूत्तमं हरिं समीक्ष्यैव यथा मतंगजाः
Then, because of his great death, the wise kinsmen of the lord of the rākṣasas wailed loudly in distress, gazing at Rāma, the foremost of the Raghus, just as elephants mourn.
स देवलोकस्य तमो निहत्य सूर्यो यथा राहुमुखाद् विमुक्तः। तथा व्यभासीद्धरिसैन्यमध्ये निहत्य रामो युधि कुम्भकर्णम्
Just as the sun, freed from the mouth of Rāhu, dispels the darkness of the world of the gods, so too did Rāma, having slain Kumbhakarṇa in battle, shine forth in the midst of the army of monkeys.
प्रहर्षमीयुर्बहवश्च वानराः प्रबुद्धपद्मप्रतिमैरिवाननैः। अपूजयन् राघवमिष्टभागिनं हते रिपौ भीमबले नृपात्मजम्
Many of the monkeys, their faces radiant like awakened lotuses, were filled with joy; they honored Rāghava, the bringer of blessings, after the mighty and fearsome son of the king, their enemy, had been slain.
स कुम्भकर्णं सुरसैन्यमर्दनं महत्सु युद्धेषु कदाचनाजितम्। ननन्द हत्वा भरताग्रजो रणे महासुरं वृत्रमिवामराधिपः
He, Bharata’s elder brother, rejoiced after slaying in battle Kumbhakarṇa, the destroyer of the armies of the gods, undefeated in great wars—just as the lord of the immortals rejoiced after killing the great demon Vṛtra.
