At that moment, Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, destroyer of enemy hosts, enraged, began battle, the conqueror of enemy cities.
Lakshmana, the valiant one, drove seven arrows into Kumbhakarna’s body, took up others, and released them as well.
Tormented by those special missiles, that rakshasa became furious, and then the mighty Lakshmana, delight of Sumitra, grew angry.
Then, his radiant armor, made of pure gold, was covered by arrows, as the wind covers evening clouds.
Pressed by arrows dark as clusters of collyrium and adorned with golden ornaments, he shone like the sun surrounded by clouds.
Then that formidable rakshasa, increasing the joy of Sumitra, spoke with disdain, his voice thundering like a mass of clouds.
Even Death himself would find it difficult to defeat me in battle; by fighting me without fear, you have displayed your valor.
One who stands armed in battle, like Death in a great conflict, is worthy of honor even if he stands before you—how much more so one who offers battle.
Even Indra, mounted on Airavata and surrounded by all the gods, has never before stood against me in battle.
Today, O Saumitri, I am pleased by your prowess, even though you are young; I wish to depart, having sought permission from Rāghava.
Though I am satisfied by your courage, strength, and enthusiasm in battle, I desire to slay only Rāma, for with him slain, all is slain.
When Rāma is killed by me here, whoever else remains in battle, I will fight them with my crushing strength.
Having spoken thus, that rakshasa uttered words mingled with praise, and Saumitri, laughing, replied with words even more fierce in battle.
You, who are insurmountable even to Indra and the other gods, have indeed attained heroism; this is true, O warrior, for today your valor has been witnessed.
Here stands Rāma, son of Daśaratha, firm as a mountain; hearing this, the night-dweller disregarded Lakṣmaṇa.
Surpassing Saumitri, the mighty Kumbhakarṇa rushed straight toward Rāma, shaking the earth as he went.
Then Rāma, son of Daśaratha, employed a fierce weapon and launched sharp arrows at the heart of Kumbhakarṇa.
Pierced by Rāma as he charged forward, flames mixed with embers burst from the mouth of the enraged one.
Struck by Rāma's weapon, the dreadful leader of rakshasas roared and, enraged, rushed at the monkeys, scattering them in battle.
The arrows, adorned with peacock feathers, sank into his chest, and his mace slipped from his hand and fell to the ground.
All his weapons were scattered on the earth, and the mighty one realized he was now without arms.
With fists and hands he wrought great slaughter; his body pierced by arrows, drenched in blood, he poured forth crimson like a mountain with flowing streams.
Overcome by fierce anger and faint from blood loss, he ran about devouring monkeys, rakshasas, and bears.
Then, the mighty one of terrifying valor, brandishing a dreadful mountain peak, hurled it toward Rama with strength like Death incarnate.
Before it could reach him, Rama, stringing his bow, cut that mountain peak into seven pieces with straight-flying arrows.
Then Rama, righteous in soul, the foremost of Bharata's brothers, shattered that great peak with arrows adorned in gold.
That peak, resembling the summit of Meru and shining with splendor, fell upon two hundred monkeys as it descended.
At that moment, the righteous Lakshmana spoke to Rama, preparing himself for Kumbhakarna's slaying and reflecting on many strategies.
O King, he does not recognize monkeys or rakshasas; intoxicated by the scent of blood, he devours both his own and his enemies.
Let the foremost monkeys ascend everywhere, and let the chief leaders stand all around him.
