'Therefore, I will wait a moment for the valor of the one who is freed; meanwhile, I will encourage the scattered monkey troops.'
Thus reflecting, Hanuman, the son of the wind-god, once again rallied the great army of monkeys.
Then Kumbhakarna entered Lanka, carrying the great monkey who was struggling, and was honored with showers of the finest flowers from those in palaces, mansions, and gateways.
Sprinkled slowly with showers of parched grain and fragrant powders, the mighty one regained consciousness from the coolness of the royal avenue.
Then, having with difficulty regained his senses while still held in the powerful one's arms, the great-souled Sugriva looked about the royal road of the city and pondered repeatedly.
Now that I have been seized in this way, how indeed can I possibly act today? Yet I will act so that what is desired and beneficial for the monkeys will be accomplished.
Then, suddenly approaching with his hands, the king of the monkeys, enemy of Indra among the gods, bit his ears with his sharp teeth, his nose with his fangs, and tore his sides with his feet.
Thus Kumbhakarna, his ears and nose torn away, wounded by those teeth and claws, overcome by rage, his body soaked with blood, seized Sugriva and crushed him to the ground.
Crushed on the earth by those fierce and mighty enemies of the gods, he, like a ball, quickly leapt into the sky and again returned to Rama.
Kumbhakarna, the mighty one, deprived of his ears and nose, shone, drenched in blood, like a mountain with flowing streams.
The great-bodied, terrifying-looking rakshasa, his body wet with blood, once more turned his mind to battle.
Ravana’s brother, streaming with blood in his anger, shone like a mass of dark clouds tinged with evening light.
When he had departed, the enemy of the gods, burning with rage, rushed again to battle; thinking, 'I am without weapons,' the fierce one then seized a great club.
Then, suddenly emerging from the city with great energy, Kumbhakarna, the rakshasa, devoured the fierce army of monkeys in battle, like the fire of destruction at the end of an age consuming creatures.
Hungry, greedy for blood and flesh, Kumbhakarna entered that fierce army of monkeys and, deluded in battle, devoured rakshasas, monkeys, pishachas, and bears, just as Death seizes beings at the end of an age; he also ate the chief monkeys.
In his fury, he seized one, two, three, or many monkeys together with rakshasas in a single hand and quickly threw them into his mouth.
While being struck by the peaks of great mountains, the mighty one, his body streaming with fat and blood, continued to devour the monkeys.
Those monkeys, being eaten, then fled to Rama for refuge, while Kumbhakarna, greatly enraged, ran about devouring the monkeys.
Seizing with his arms seven hundred, eight hundred, twenty, thirty, and so on, he ran about, eating them.
His body smeared with fat, marrow, and blood, garlands of entrails hanging from his ears, with sharp fangs he rained down spears, like Time grown fierce at the end of an age.
At that moment, Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, destroyer of enemy hosts, enraged, began battle, the conqueror of enemy cities.
Lakshmana, the valiant one, drove seven arrows into Kumbhakarna’s body, took up others, and released them as well.
Tormented by those special missiles, that rakshasa became furious, and then the mighty Lakshmana, delight of Sumitra, grew angry.
Then, his radiant armor, made of pure gold, was covered by arrows, as the wind covers evening clouds.
Pressed by arrows dark as clusters of collyrium and adorned with golden ornaments, he shone like the sun surrounded by clouds.
Then that formidable rakshasa, increasing the joy of Sumitra, spoke with disdain, his voice thundering like a mass of clouds.
Even Death himself would find it difficult to defeat me in battle; by fighting me without fear, you have displayed your valor.
One who stands armed in battle, like Death in a great conflict, is worthy of honor even if he stands before you—how much more so one who offers battle.
Even Indra, mounted on Airavata and surrounded by all the gods, has never before stood against me in battle.
Today, O Saumitri, I am pleased by your prowess, even though you are young; I wish to depart, having sought permission from Rāghava.
