स कुम्भकर्णस्य वचो निशम्य व्याविध्य शैलं सहसा मुमोच। तेनाजघानोरसि कुम्भकर्णं शैलेन वज्राशनिसंनिभेन
Hearing Kumbhakarna's words, he whirled the mountain and hurled it swiftly; with that mountain, like a thunderbolt, he struck Kumbhakarna on the chest.
तच्छैलशृङ्गं सहसा विभिन्नं भुजान्तरे तस्य तदा विशाले। ततो विषेदुः सहसा प्लवंगा रक्षोगणाश्चापि मुदा विनेदुः
That mountain peak, swiftly shattered between his vast arms, then the monkeys cried out in alarm, and the rakshasa hosts shouted in joy.
स शैलशृङ्गाभिहतश्चुकोप ननाद रोषाच्च विवृत्य वक्त्रम्। व्याविध्य शूलं स तडित्प्रकाशं चिक्षेप हर्यृक्षपतेर्वधाय
Struck by the mountain peak, he grew angry, roared, and opened his mouth wide in rage; whirling his spear, shining like lightning, he hurled it to slay the monkey chief.
तत् कुम्भकर्णस्य भुजप्रणुन्नं शूलं शितं काञ्चनधामयष्टिम्। क्षिप्रं समुत्पत्य निगृह्य दोर्भ्यां बभञ्ज वेगेन सुतोऽनिलस्य
That sharp spear, with a golden shaft, struck by Kumbhakarna's arm, Hanuman quickly leapt up, seized it with both hands, and broke it with force.
कृतं भारसहस्रस्य शूलं कालायसं महत्। बभञ्ज जानुमारोप्य तदा हृष्टः प्लवंगमः
The great iron spear, weighing a thousand loads, Hanuman broke by placing it on his knee, rejoicing.
शूलं भग्नं हनुमता दृष्ट्वा वानरवाहिनी। हृष्टा ननाद बहुशः सर्वतश्चापि दुद्रुवे
Seeing the spear broken by Hanuman, the monkey army rejoiced, roared repeatedly, and ran everywhere.
बभूवाथ परित्रस्तो राक्षसो विमुखोऽभवत्। सिंहनादं च ते चक्रुः प्रहृष्टा वनगोचराः। मारुतिं पूजयांचक्रुर्दृष्ट्वा शूलं तथागतम्
Then the rakshasa became fearful and turned away; the delighted forest-dwellers gave lion-roars, honored Maruti, seeing the spear thus destroyed.
स तत् तथा भग्नमवेक्ष्य शूलं चुकोप रक्षोधिपतिर्महात्मा। उत्पाट्य लङ्कामलयात् स शृङ्गं जघान सुग्रीवमुपेत्य तेन
Seeing his spear thus broken, the great-souled king of the rakshasas grew enraged; uprooting a peak from Lanka's mountain, he struck Sugriva with it as he approached.
समभ्युपेत्याद्भुतघोरवीर्यं स कुम्भकर्णो युधि वानरेन्द्रम्। जहार सुग्रीवमभिप्रगृह्य यथानिलो मेघमिव प्रचण्डः
Then Kumbhakarna, of wondrous and terrible might, advanced in battle upon the king of the monkeys; seizing Sugriva firmly, he carried him off as a fierce wind carries off a cloud.
स तं महामेघनिकाशरूप- मुत्पाट्य गच्छन् युधि कुम्भकर्णः। रराज मेरुप्रतिमानरूपो मेरुर्यथा व्युच्छ्रितघोरशृङ्गः
Kumbhakarna, resembling a great dark cloud, carried him away in battle; his form, like Mount Meru, shone forth, towering with its dreadful peak.
ततस्तमादाय जगाम वीरः संस्तूयमानो युधि राक्षसेन्द्रः। शृण्वन् निनादं त्रिदिवालयानां प्लवङ्गराजग्रहविस्मितानाम्
Then the heroic lord of the rakshasas, praised on the battlefield, carried him off, hearing the cries of the dwellers of the heavens, who were astonished at the capture of the monkey king.
ततस्तमादाय तदा स मेने हरीन्द्रमिन्द्रोपममिन्द्रवीर्यः। अस्मिन् हते सर्वमिदं हतं स्यात् सराघवं सैन्यमितीन्द्रशत्रुः
Then, having seized him, the mighty Kumbhakarna, equal in strength to Indra, thought: 'If this lord of monkeys is slain, all this army, along with Rama, will be destroyed.'
विद्रुतां वाहिनीं दृष्ट्वा वानराणामितस्ततः। कुम्भकर्णेन सुग्रीवं गृहीतं चापि वानरम्
Seeing the monkey army fleeing here and there, and Sugriva seized by Kumbhakarna, the monkeys were dismayed.
हनूमांश्चिन्तयामास मतिमान् मारुतात्मजः। एवं गृहीते सुग्रीवे किं कर्तव्यं मया भवेत्
Hanuman, the wise son of the wind-god, began to ponder: 'With Sugriva thus captured, what should I do now?'
यद्धि न्याय्यं मया कर्तुं तत् करिष्याम्यसंशयम्। भूत्वा पर्वतसंकाशो नाशयिष्यामि राक्षसम्
'Whatever is right for me to do, that I will certainly do; assuming a form like a mountain, I will destroy the rakshasa.'
मया हते संयति कुम्भकर्णे महाबले मुष्टिविशीर्णदेहे। विमोचिते वानरपार्थिवे च भवन्तु हृष्टाः प्लवगाः समग्राः
'If I slay the mighty Kumbhakarna in battle, shattering his body with my fists, and free the monkey king, then all the monkeys will rejoice.'
अथवा स्वयमप्येष मोक्षं प्राप्स्यति वानरः। गृहीतोऽयं यदि भवेत् त्रिदशैः सासुरोरगैः
'Or perhaps this monkey will himself gain release, if he has been seized by the gods, asuras, or serpents.'
मन्ये न तावदात्मानं बुध्यते वानराधिपः। शैलप्रहाराभिहतः कुम्भकर्णेन संयुगे
'I think the lord of the monkeys is not yet conscious of himself, struck by Kumbhakarna in battle with a blow like a mountain.'
अयं मुहूर्तात् सुग्रीवो लब्धसंज्ञो महाहवे। आत्मनो वानराणां च यत् पथ्यं तत् करिष्यति
'In a moment, Sugriva will regain his senses in this great conflict, and will do whatever is best for himself and the monkeys.'
मया तु मोक्षितस्यास्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः। अप्रीतिश्च भवेत् कष्टा कीर्तिनाशश्च शाश्वतः
'But if I free this great-souled Sugriva, it would bring him bitter displeasure and a lasting loss of honor.'
तस्मान्मुहूर्तं कांक्षिष्ये विक्रमं मोक्षितस्य तु। भिन्नं च वानरानीकं तावदाश्वासयाम्यहम्
'Therefore, I will wait a moment for the valor of the one who is freed; meanwhile, I will encourage the scattered monkey troops.'
इत्येवं चिन्तयित्वाथ हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। भूयः संस्तम्भयामास वानराणां महाचमूम्
Thus reflecting, Hanuman, the son of the wind-god, once again rallied the great army of monkeys.
स कुम्भकर्णोऽथ विवेश लङ्कां स्फुरन्तमादाय महाहरिं तम्। विमानचर्यागृहगोपुरस्थैः पुष्पाग्र्यवर्षैरभिपूज्यमानः
Then Kumbhakarna entered Lanka, carrying the great monkey who was struggling, and was honored with showers of the finest flowers from those in palaces, mansions, and gateways.
लाजगन्धोदवर्षैस्तु सेच्यमानः शनैः शनैः। राजवीथ्यास्तु शीतत्वात् संज्ञां प्राप महाबलः
Sprinkled slowly with showers of parched grain and fragrant powders, the mighty one regained consciousness from the coolness of the royal avenue.
ततः स संज्ञामुपलभ्य कृच्छ्राद् बलीयसस्तस्य भुजान्तरस्थः। अवेक्षमाणः पुरराजमार्गं विचिन्तयामास मुहुर्महात्मा
Then, having with difficulty regained his senses while still held in the powerful one's arms, the great-souled Sugriva looked about the royal road of the city and pondered repeatedly.
एवं गृहीतेन कथं नु नाम शक्यं मया सम्प्रतिकर्तुमद्य। तथा करिष्यामि यथा हरीणां भविष्यतीष्टं च हितं च कार्यम्
Now that I have been seized in this way, how indeed can I possibly act today? Yet I will act so that what is desired and beneficial for the monkeys will be accomplished.
ततः कराग्रैः सहसा समेत्य राजा हरीणाममरेन्द्रशत्रोः। खरैश्च कर्णौ दशनैश्च नासां ददंश पादैर्विददार पार्श्वौ
Then, suddenly approaching with his hands, the king of the monkeys, enemy of Indra among the gods, bit his ears with his sharp teeth, his nose with his fangs, and tore his sides with his feet.
स कुम्भकर्णो हृतकर्णनासो विदारितस्तेन रदैर्नखैश्च। रोषाभिभूतः क्षतजार्द्रगात्रः सुग्रीवमाविध्य पिपेष भूमौ
Thus Kumbhakarna, his ears and nose torn away, wounded by those teeth and claws, overcome by rage, his body soaked with blood, seized Sugriva and crushed him to the ground.
स भूतले भीमबलाभिपिष्टः सुरारिभिस्तैरभिहन्यमानः। जगाम खं कन्दुकवज्जवेन पुनश्च रामेण समाजगाम
Crushed on the earth by those fierce and mighty enemies of the gods, he, like a ball, quickly leapt into the sky and again returned to Rama.
कर्णनासाविहीनस्तु कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः। रराज शोणितोत्सिक्तो गिरिः प्रस्रवणैरिव
Kumbhakarna, the mighty one, deprived of his ears and nose, shone, drenched in blood, like a mountain with flowing streams.
