लोहितार्द्रास्तु बहवः शेरते वानरर्षभाः। निरस्ताः पतिता भूमौ ताम्रपुष्पा इव द्रुमाः
Many monkey chiefs, blood-soaked, lie defeated on the ground, like trees with copper-colored flowers fallen.
लङ्घयन्तः प्रधावन्तो वानरा नावलोकयन्। केचित् समुद्रे पतिताः केचिद् गगनमास्थिताः
The monkeys, leaping and running without looking back, some fell into the ocean, others reached the sky.
वध्यमानास्तु ते वीरा राक्षसेन च लीलया। सागरं येन ते तीर्णाः पथा तेनैव दुद्रुवुः
Those heroes, being slain by the rakshasa with ease, fled by the same path by which they had crossed the ocean.
ते स्थलानि तदा निम्नं विवर्णवदना भयात्। ऋक्षा वृक्षान् समारूढाः केचित् पर्वतमाश्रिताः
At that time, the bears, faces pale with fear, climbed trees or took refuge on mountains, abandoning the ground.
ममज्जुरर्णवे केचिद् गुहाः केचित् समाश्रिताः। निपेतुः केचिदपरे केचिन्नैवावतस्थिरे। केचिद् भूमौ निपतिताः केचित् सुप्ता मृता इव
Some sank into the turbulent sea, some took shelter in caves, others fell, some did not stand firm; some lay on the ground, some slept as if dead.
तान् समीक्ष्याङ्गदो भग्नान् वानरानिदमब्रवीत्। अवतिष्ठत युध्यामो निवर्तध्वं प्लवंगमाः
Seeing the monkeys broken, Angada spoke: 'Stand firm! Let us fight! Turn back, O vanaras!'
भग्नानां वो न पश्यामि परिक्रम्य महीमिमाम्। स्थानं सर्वे निवर्तध्वं किं प्राणान् परिरक्षथ
I do not see a place for you, broken as you are, after circling this earth. All return! Why do you protect your lives?
निरायुधानां क्रमतामसङ्गगतिपौरुषाः। दारा ह्युपहसिष्यन्ति स वै घातः सुजीवताम्
Devoid of weapons, lacking resolve and valor, your wives will mock you; that is the downfall of those who live well.
कुलेषु जाताः सर्वेऽस्मिन् विस्तीर्णेषु महत्सु च। क्व गच्छत भयत्रस्ताः प्राकृता हरयो यथा। अनार्याः खलु यद्भीतास्त्यक्त्वा वीर्यं प्रधावत
All born in these vast and noble clans—where are you going, frightened like ordinary monkeys? Truly, ignoble ones flee in fear, abandoning their courage.
विकत्थनानि वो यानि भवद्भिर्जनसंसदि। तानि वः क्व नु यातानि सोदग्राणि हितानि च
Where now are your boasts, spoken among people, those proud and noble words?
भीरोः प्रवादाः श्रूयन्ते यस्तु जीवति धिक्कृतः। मार्गः सत्पुरुषैर्जुष्टः सेव्यतां त्यज्यतां भयम्
Cowards' talk is heard; whoever lives is disgraced. Follow the path honored by the noble, abandon fear.
शयामहे वा निहताः पृथिव्यामल्पजीविताः। प्राप्नुयामो ब्रह्मलोकं दुष्प्रापं च कुयोधिभिः
Let us lie slain upon the earth, our lives short; we may attain Brahma's world, which is hard to reach for the wicked.
अवाप्नुयामः कीर्तिं वा निहत्वा शत्रुमाहवे। निहता वीरलोकस्य भोक्ष्यामो वसु वानराः
Or let us gain fame by slaying the enemy in battle; if slain, we shall enjoy the realm of heroes, or riches, O monkeys.
न कुम्भकर्णः काकुत्स्थं दृष्ट्वा जीवन् गमिष्यति। दीप्यमानमिवासाद्य पतङ्गो ज्वलनं यथा
Kumbhakarna will not survive after seeing Kakutstha, just as a moth, approaching a blazing fire, perishes.
पलायनेन चोद्दिष्टाः प्राणान् रक्षामहे वयम्। एकेन बहवो भग्ना यशो नाशं गमिष्यति
Driven to flight, we protect our lives; many are broken by one, and our glory will be lost.
एवं ब्रुवाणं तं शूरमङ्गदं कनकाङ्गदम्। द्रवमाणास्ततो वाक्यमूचुः शूरविगर्हितम्
As the heroic Angada, adorned with golden ornaments, spoke thus, those who were fleeing uttered words that were scorned by the brave.
कृतं नः कदनं घोरं कुम्भकर्णेन रक्षसा। न स्थानकालो गच्छामो दयितं जीवितं हि नः
A terrible slaughter has been wrought upon us by the demon Kumbhakarna; this is not the time or place to stand—let us go, for our lives are dear to us.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं सर्वे ते भेजिरे दिशः। भीमं भीमाक्षमायान्तं दृष्ट्वा वानरयूथपाः
Having spoken these words, all of them scattered in different directions, for the monkey leaders saw the dreadful Bhima with his fierce eyes approaching.
द्रवमाणास्तु ते वीरा अङ्गदेन बलीमुखाः। सान्त्वनैश्चानुमानैश्च ततः सर्वे निवर्तिताः
But those valiant ones, with Angada at their head, were turned back by his consolations and persuasions.
प्रहर्षमुपनीताश्च वालिपुत्रेण धीमता। आज्ञाप्रतीक्षास्तस्थुश्च सर्वे वानरयूथपाः
Filled with joy by the wise son of Vali, all the monkey leaders stood waiting for orders.
ऋषभशरभमैन्दधूम्रनीलाः कुमुदसुषेणगवाक्षरम्भताराः। द्विविदपनसवायुपुत्रमुख्या- स्त्वरिततराभिमुखं रणं प्रयाताः
Rishabha, Sharabha, Mainda, Dhumra, Nila, Kumuda, Sushena, Gavaksha, Rambha, Tara, and the foremost among them—Dvividha, Panasa, and the son of the Wind—hurried swiftly toward the battle.

Those great-bodied ones, having turned back after hearing Angada's words, adopted steadfast resolve, all desiring battle.
समुदीरितवीर्यास्ते समारोपितविक्रमाः। पर्यवस्थापिता वाक्यैरङ्गदेन बलीयसा
Their courage aroused, their valor set forth, they were steadied by the powerful Angada's words.
प्रयाताश्च गता हर्षं मरणे कृतनिश्चयाः। चक्रुः सुतुमुलं युद्धं वानरास्त्यक्तजीविताः
Resolved on death, they went forth joyfully; the monkeys, having abandoned concern for their lives, waged a tumultuous battle.
अथ वृक्षान् महाकायाः सानूनि सुमहान्ति च। वानरास्तूर्णमुद्यम्य कुम्भकर्णमभिद्रवन्
Then the great-bodied monkeys swiftly seized huge trees and mountain peaks, and charged at Kumbhakarna.
कुम्भकर्णः सुसंक्रुद्धो गदामुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्। धर्षयन् स महाकायः समन्ताद् व्यक्षिपद् रिपून्
Kumbhakarna, greatly enraged and mighty, raised his mace and, with his massive body, struck down enemies all around.
शतानि सप्त चाष्टौ च सहस्राणि च वानराः। प्रकीर्णाः शेरते भूमौ कुम्भकर्णेन ताडिताः
Seven hundred and eight thousand monkeys, struck by Kumbhakarna, lay scattered on the ground.
षोडशाष्टौ च दश च विंशत्त्रिंशत्तथैव च। परिक्षिप्य च बाहुभ्यां खादन् स परिधावति। भक्षयन् भृशसंक्रुद्धो गरुडः पन्नगानिव
Sixteen, eight, ten, twenty, and thirty more he encircled with his arms, devouring them as he ran, furious as Garuda devouring serpents.
कृच्छ्रेण च समाश्वस्ताः संगम्य च ततस्ततः। वृक्षाद्रिहस्ता हरयस्तस्थुः संग्राममूर्धनि
With great difficulty, some monkeys recovered and, gathering here and there, stood at the forefront of the battle, holding trees and mountains.
