निष्पपात तदा चोल्का ज्वलन्ती भीमनिःस्वना। आदित्यो निष्प्रभश्चासीन्न वाति च सुखोऽनिलः
Then a blazing meteor, terrifying in sound, fell; the sun lost its brilliance, and the wind no longer blew pleasantly.
अचिन्तयन् महोत्पातानुदितान् रोमहर्षणान्। निर्ययौ कुम्भकर्णस्तु कृतान्तबलचोदितः
Reflecting on the great and hair-raising omens that had arisen, Kumbhakarna departed, urged on by the force of Death.
स लङ्घयित्वा प्राकारं पद्भ्यां पर्वतसंनिभः। ददर्शाभ्रघनप्रख्यं वानरानीकमद्भुतम्
He, massive as a mountain, crossed the rampart on foot and beheld the wondrous army of monkeys, resembling a dense mass of clouds.
ते दृष्ट्वा राक्षसश्रेष्ठं वानराः पर्वतोपमम्। वायुनुन्ना इव घना ययुः सर्वा दिशस्तदा
Seeing the foremost of rakshasas, the monkeys, mountain-like themselves, scattered in all directions like clouds driven by the wind.
तद् वानरानीकमतिप्रचण्डं दिशो द्रवद्भिन्नमिवाभ्रजालम्। स कुम्भकर्णः समवेक्ष्य हर्षा- न्ननाद भूयो घनवद्घनाभः
Beholding the exceedingly fierce monkey army, breaking apart like a mass of clouds fleeing in all directions, Kumbhakarna, cloud-like in form, roared again with delight, like thunder.
ते तस्य घोरं निनदं निशम्य यथा निनादं दिवि वारिदस्य। पेतुर्धरण्यां बहवः प्लवङ्गा निकृत्तमूला इव शालवृक्षाः
Hearing his dreadful roar, like the thunder of a cloud in the sky, many monkeys fell to the ground, like shala trees whose roots have been cut.
विपुलपरिघवान् स कुम्भकर्णो रिपुनिधनाय विनिःसृतो महात्मा। कपिगणभयमाददत् सुभीमं प्रभुरिव किंकरदण्डवान् युगान्ते
Kumbhakarna, mighty and bearing a massive iron club, emerged to destroy his enemies, instilling great terror in the monkey hosts, like a lord wielding the rod of punishment at the end of an age.

स लङ्घयित्वा प्राकारं गिरिकूटोपमो महान्। निर्ययौ नगरात् तूर्णं कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः
Kumbhakarna, immense and mountain-peaked in form, swiftly crossed the rampart and departed from the city.
ननाद च महानादं समुद्रमभिनादयन्। विजयन्निव निर्घातान् विधमन्निव पर्वतान्
He roared a mighty roar, echoing across the ocean, as if triumphing over thunderbolts and scattering mountains.
तमवध्यं मघवता यमेन वरुणेन वा। प्रेक्ष्य भीमाक्षमायान्तं वानरा विप्रदुद्रुवुः
Seeing him approach, dreadful-eyed and invincible even to Indra, Yama, or Varuna, the monkeys fled in terror.
तांस्तु विप्रद्रुतान् दृष्ट्वा राजपुत्रोऽङ्गदोऽब्रवीत्। नलं नीलं गवाक्षं च कुमुदं च महाबलम्
Seeing them fleeing, Prince Angada addressed Nala, Nīla, Gavākṣa, and the mighty Kumuda.
आत्मनस्तानि विस्मृत्य वीर्याण्यभिजनानि च। क्व गच्छत भयत्रस्ताः प्राकृता हरयो यथा
Forgetting their own strength and noble lineage, he said, 'Where are you going, frightened as ordinary monkeys?'
साधु सौम्या निवर्तध्वं किं प्राणान् परिरक्षथ। नालं युद्धाय वै रक्षो महतीयं विभीषिका
'Good friends, return! Why do you only protect your lives? This rakshasa is not enough for battle; this terror is immense.'
महतीमुत्थितामेनां राक्षसानां विभीषिकाम्। विक्रमाद् विधमिष्यामो निवर्तध्वं प्लवङ्गमाः
'This great terror of the rakshasas has arisen; by valor we shall dispel it. Return, O monkeys!'
कृच्छ्रेण तु समाश्वस्य संगम्य च ततस्ततः। वृक्षान् गृहीत्वा हरयः सम्प्रतस्थू रणाजिरे
With difficulty regaining their composure and gathering together, the monkeys seized trees and advanced onto the battlefield.
ते निवर्त्य तु संरब्धाः कुम्भकर्णं वनौकसः। निजघ्नुः परमक्रुद्धाः समदा इव कुञ्जराः
Rallying, the forest-dwellers, now enraged, attacked Kumbhakarna with utmost fury, like intoxicated elephants.
प्रांशुभिर्गिरिशृङ्गैश्च शिलाभिश्च महाबलाः। पादपैः पुष्पिताग्रैश्च हन्यमानो न कम्पते
Though struck by towering mountain peaks, massive stones, and blossoming treetops, the mighty one does not waver.
तस्य गात्रेषु पतिता भिद्यन्ते बहवः शिलाः। पादपाः पुष्पिताग्राश्च भग्नाः पेतुर्महीतले
Many stones fall upon his body and shatter; blossoming treetops are broken and drop to the earth.
सोऽपि सैन्यानि संक्रुद्धौ वानराणां महौजसाम्। ममन्थ परमायत्तो वनान्यग्निरिवोत्थितः
He, enraged and fully exerting himself, churns through the armies of the great-spirited monkeys, like fire rising in a forest.
लोहितार्द्रास्तु बहवः शेरते वानरर्षभाः। निरस्ताः पतिता भूमौ ताम्रपुष्पा इव द्रुमाः
Many monkey chiefs, blood-soaked, lie defeated on the ground, like trees with copper-colored flowers fallen.
लङ्घयन्तः प्रधावन्तो वानरा नावलोकयन्। केचित् समुद्रे पतिताः केचिद् गगनमास्थिताः
The monkeys, leaping and running without looking back, some fell into the ocean, others reached the sky.
वध्यमानास्तु ते वीरा राक्षसेन च लीलया। सागरं येन ते तीर्णाः पथा तेनैव दुद्रुवुः
Those heroes, being slain by the rakshasa with ease, fled by the same path by which they had crossed the ocean.
ते स्थलानि तदा निम्नं विवर्णवदना भयात्। ऋक्षा वृक्षान् समारूढाः केचित् पर्वतमाश्रिताः
At that time, the bears, faces pale with fear, climbed trees or took refuge on mountains, abandoning the ground.
ममज्जुरर्णवे केचिद् गुहाः केचित् समाश्रिताः। निपेतुः केचिदपरे केचिन्नैवावतस्थिरे। केचिद् भूमौ निपतिताः केचित् सुप्ता मृता इव
Some sank into the turbulent sea, some took shelter in caves, others fell, some did not stand firm; some lay on the ground, some slept as if dead.
तान् समीक्ष्याङ्गदो भग्नान् वानरानिदमब्रवीत्। अवतिष्ठत युध्यामो निवर्तध्वं प्लवंगमाः
Seeing the monkeys broken, Angada spoke: 'Stand firm! Let us fight! Turn back, O vanaras!'
भग्नानां वो न पश्यामि परिक्रम्य महीमिमाम्। स्थानं सर्वे निवर्तध्वं किं प्राणान् परिरक्षथ
I do not see a place for you, broken as you are, after circling this earth. All return! Why do you protect your lives?
निरायुधानां क्रमतामसङ्गगतिपौरुषाः। दारा ह्युपहसिष्यन्ति स वै घातः सुजीवताम्
Devoid of weapons, lacking resolve and valor, your wives will mock you; that is the downfall of those who live well.
कुलेषु जाताः सर्वेऽस्मिन् विस्तीर्णेषु महत्सु च। क्व गच्छत भयत्रस्ताः प्राकृता हरयो यथा। अनार्याः खलु यद्भीतास्त्यक्त्वा वीर्यं प्रधावत
All born in these vast and noble clans—where are you going, frightened like ordinary monkeys? Truly, ignoble ones flee in fear, abandoning their courage.
विकत्थनानि वो यानि भवद्भिर्जनसंसदि। तानि वः क्व नु यातानि सोदग्राणि हितानि च
Where now are your boasts, spoken among people, those proud and noble words?
