यस्य नास्ति मनुष्येषु सदृशो राक्षसोत्तम। कथमाशंससे योद्धुं तुल्येनेन्द्रविवस्वतोः
O best of Rakshasas, when there is no one among men his equal, how do you hope to fight someone comparable to Indra or the Sun?
एवमुक्त्वा तु संरब्धं कुम्भकर्णं महोदरः। उवाच रक्षसां मध्ये रावणं लोकरावणम्
Having spoken thus to the enraged Kumbhakarna, Mahodara addressed Ravana, the terror of the worlds, in the midst of the Rakshasas.
लब्ध्वा पुरस्ताद् वैदेहीं किमर्थं त्वं विलम्बसे। यदीच्छसि तदा सीता वशगा ते भविष्यति
Having already seized Vaidehi, why do you delay? If you wish, Sita will become subject to you at that very moment.
दृष्टः कश्चिदुपायो मे सीतोपस्थानकारकः। रुचितश्चेत् स्वया बुद्ध्या राक्षसेन्द्र ततः शृणु
I have thought of a means to bring Sita before you; if it pleases your mind, O king of Rakshasas, then listen.
अहं द्विजिह्वः संह्रादी कुम्भकर्णो वितर्दनः। पञ्च रामवधायैते निर्यान्तीत्यवघोषय
Announce that I, Dvijihva, Samhradi, Kumbhakarna, and Vitardana—these five—are going out to kill Rama.
ततो गत्वा वयं युद्धं दास्यामस्तस्य यत्नतः। जेष्यामो यदि ते शत्रून् नोपायैः कार्यमस्ति नः
Then we shall go and fight him with all our effort; if we defeat your enemies, we will have no need for stratagems.
अथ जीवति नः शत्रुर्वयं च कृतसंयुगाः। ततः समभिपत्स्यामो मनसा यत् समीक्षितम्
But if our enemy survives and we return from battle, then we will pursue whatever plan you have considered in your mind.
वयं युद्धादिहैष्यामो रुधिरेण समुक्षिताः। विदार्य स्वतनुं बाणै रामनामाङ्कितैः शरैः
We will return here from battle, drenched in blood, our bodies pierced by arrows marked with Rama's name.
भक्षितो राघवोऽस्माभिर्लक्ष्मणश्चेति वादिनः। ततः पादौ ग्रहीष्यामस्त्वं नः कामं प्रपूरय
Claiming, 'Raghava and Lakshmana have been devoured by us,' we will grasp your feet—fulfill our desire.
ततोऽवघोषय पुरे गजस्कन्धेन पार्थिव। हतो रामः सह भ्रात्रा ससैन्य इति सर्वतः
Then proclaim everywhere in the city, from the back of an elephant, O king, that Rama and his brother, along with their army, have been slain.
प्रीतो नाम ततो भूत्वा भृत्यानां त्वमरिंदम। भोगांश्च परिवारांश्च कामान् वसु च दापय
Then, delighted in name, O subduer of foes, reward your servants with enjoyments, attendants, pleasures, and wealth.
ततो माल्यानि वासांसि वीराणामनुलेपनम्। पेयं च बहु योधेभ्यः स्वयं च मुदितः पिब
Then distribute garlands, garments, ointments for the heroes, and plenty to drink for the warriors; and you yourself, rejoicing, drink as well.
ततोऽस्मिन् बहुलीभूते कौलीने सर्वतो गते। भक्षितः ससुहृद् रामो राक्षसैरिति विश्रुते
When this festivity has spread everywhere and the report is widespread that Rama and his friends have been devoured by the Rakshasas—
प्रविश्याश्वास्य चापि त्वं सीतां रहसि सान्त्वयन्। धनधान्यैश्च कामैश्च रत्नैश्चैनां प्रलोभय
Then, entering and comforting Sita in private, soothe her and tempt her with wealth, grain, pleasures, and jewels.
अनयोपधया राजन् भूयः शोकानुबन्धया। अकामा त्वद्वशं सीता नष्टनाथा गमिष्यति
By this deceit, O king, which brings renewed sorrow, Sita, bereft of her protector and unwilling, will come under your control.
रमणीयं हि भर्तारं विनष्टमधिगम्य सा। नैराश्यात् स्त्रीलघुत्वाच्च त्वद्वशं प्रतिपत्स्यते
Having found her charming husband lost, she, out of despair and the fickleness of women, will come under your control.
सा पुरा सुखसंवृद्धा सुखार्हा दुःखकर्शिता। त्वय्यधीनं सुखं ज्ञात्वा सर्वथैव गमिष्यति
She, who was once raised in comfort and worthy of happiness, now tormented by sorrow, knowing that happiness depends on you, will surely turn to you in every way.
एतत् सुनीतं मम दर्शनेन रामं हि दृष्ट्वैव भवेदनर्थः। इहैव ते सेत्स्यति मोत्सुको भू- र्महानयुद्धेन सुखस्य लाभः
This is wisely spoken: by my appearance, disaster would arise merely from seeing Rāma; here itself you will succeed—do not be anxious—great happiness is gained not by a great war.
अनष्टसैन्यो ह्यनवाप्तसंशयो रिपुं त्वयुद्धेन जयञ्जनाधिपः। यशश्च पुण्यं च महान्महीपते श्रियं च कीर्तिं च चिरं समश्नुते
With your army intact and no uncertainty encountered, by defeating the enemy in battle, O lord of men, you will long enjoy great fame, merit, prosperity, and renown.

Hear now the sixty-fifth sarga (chapter).
स तथोक्तस्तु निर्भर्त्स्य कुम्भकर्णो महोदरम्। अब्रवीद् राक्षसश्रेष्ठं भ्रातरं रावणं ततः
Thus addressed and rebuked, Kumbhakarṇa spoke to Mahodara, and then to his brother Rāvaṇa, the foremost of rākṣasas.
सोऽहं तव भयं घोरं वधात् तस्य दुरात्मनः। रामस्याद्य प्रमार्जामि निर्वैरो हि सुखी भव
Now I will wipe away your dreadful fear of death at the hands of that wicked Rāma; be at ease, for I bear no enmity—be happy.
गर्जन्ति न वृथा शूरा निर्जला इव तोयदाः। पश्य सम्पद्यमानं तु गर्जितं युधि कर्मणा
Heroes do not boast in vain, like clouds without water; see how my words will be fulfilled in battle by my deeds.
न मर्षयन्ति चात्मानं सम्भावयितुमात्मना। अदर्शयित्वा शूरास्तु कर्म कुर्वन्ति दुष्करम्
The truly brave do not praise themselves or display themselves; instead, they perform difficult deeds without showing off.
विक्लवानां ह्यबुद्धीनां राज्ञां पण्डितमानिनाम्। रोचते त्वद्वचो नित्यं कथ्यमानं महोदर
Your words, Mahodara, are always pleasing to weak, foolish kings who consider themselves wise.
युद्धे कापुरुषैर्नित्यं भवद्भिः प्रियवादिभिः। राजानमनुगच्छद्भिः सर्वं कृत्यं विनाशितम्
Because of cowards like you, who always speak pleasing words and follow the king, all duties in war are ruined.
राजशेषा कृता लङ्का क्षीणः कोशो बलं हतम्। राजानमिममासाद्य सुहृच्चिह्नममित्रकम्
Lanka is left with only the king; the treasury is depleted, the army destroyed; this king, marked as a friend, has become an enemy.
एष निर्याम्यहं युद्धमुद्यतः शत्रुनिर्जये। दुर्नयं भवतामद्य समीकर्तुं महाहवे
Now I go forth, prepared for battle, to conquer the enemy and to correct your bad counsel in this great war.
एवमुक्तवतो वाक्यं कुम्भकर्णस्य धीमतः। प्रत्युवाच ततो वाक्यं प्रहसन् राक्षसाधिपः
When Kumbhakarṇa, wise as he was, had spoken thus, the lord of rākṣasas replied, laughing.
महोदरोऽयं रामात् तु परित्रस्तो न संशयः। न हि रोचयते तात युद्धं युद्धविशारद
This Mahodara is indeed afraid of Rāma, without doubt; for, skilled in war, he does not desire battle, dear brother.
