By killing you, son of Dasharatha, I shall attain great happiness; after slaying Rama along with Lakshmana, I will consume all the foremost monkey chiefs.
Enjoy yourself, O king, and drink the wine today; do what you must, setting aside sorrow. For when I send Rama to the abode of Yama today, Sita will long remain under your control.
Listen now to the sixty-fourth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Hearing the words spoken by the mighty and strong-armed Atikāya, Mahodara replied to Kumbhakarṇa.
Born in Kumbhakarṇa's lineage, you are bold and of ordinary understanding; being arrogant, you are unable to comprehend what must be done in every situation.
It is not that the king does not know right and wrong, Kumbhakarṇa; but you, emboldened since youth, only wish to speak out.
A foremost among rākṣasas knows the place, growth, decline, and the proper arrangement of time and place, both for himself and for others.
Who, possessing wisdom, would act as you do—speaking rashly with a common mind and without having served the elders?
The dharma, artha, and kāma you speak of as separate pursuits—by nature, you lack the capacity to truly understand their marks.
For all causes, action is the purpose; and here, the fruit of actions is better or worse depending on their nature.
Indeed, dharma and artha yield the highest fruit, while adharma and anartha bring about harmful results.
Men perform actions for results in this world and the next; even one devoted to desire attains auspicious deeds.
Thus, what the king has resolved in his heart is our counsel; what boldness is there to be brought against the enemy in this?
As for the reason you have given for a single person advancing alone, I will tell you what is improper and unfit in that.
How will you, alone, conquer Rāghava, by whom many mighty rākṣasas were previously slain in Janasthāna?
Those powerful rākṣasas whom he defeated before in Janasthāna—you do not see any of them in the city today, for they are all afraid.
You wish to rouse Rama, son of Dasharatha, who is like an enraged lion, like awakening a sleeping serpent.
Who is able to approach him, ever blazing with energy, formidable in his wrath, and as unassailable as death itself?
All this remains uncertain as we confront the enemy; Father, I do not at all approve of a single person going forth.
Who, being deprived of resources, would seek to subdue a prosperous enemy, like an ordinary man, with certain risk to his own life?
O best of Rakshasas, when there is no one among men his equal, how do you hope to fight someone comparable to Indra or the Sun?
Having spoken thus to the enraged Kumbhakarna, Mahodara addressed Ravana, the terror of the worlds, in the midst of the Rakshasas.
Having already seized Vaidehi, why do you delay? If you wish, Sita will become subject to you at that very moment.
I have thought of a means to bring Sita before you; if it pleases your mind, O king of Rakshasas, then listen.
Announce that I, Dvijihva, Samhradi, Kumbhakarna, and Vitardana—these five—are going out to kill Rama.
Then we shall go and fight him with all our effort; if we defeat your enemies, we will have no need for stratagems.
But if our enemy survives and we return from battle, then we will pursue whatever plan you have considered in your mind.
We will return here from battle, drenched in blood, our bodies pierced by arrows marked with Rama's name.
Claiming, 'Raghava and Lakshmana have been devoured by us,' we will grasp your feet—fulfill our desire.
Then proclaim everywhere in the city, from the back of an elephant, O king, that Rama and his brother, along with their army, have been slain.
