Let all the monkeys be told: this is a great engine raised up; knowing this, the monkeys here will become fearless.
Hearing Vibhīṣaṇa’s words, reasonable and well-spoken, Rāghava then addressed these words to Nīla, the commander.
Go, arrange all the armies and stand ready, O fiery one; take up the gates of Laṅkā and its various passages.
Gather mountain peaks, trees, and also rocks; let all the monkeys be armed, holding mountains in their hands.
Thus commanded by Rāghava, Nīla, the leader of the monkey hosts, properly ordered the monkey army, like a great monkey-chief.
Then Gavākṣa, Śarabha, Hanumān, and Aṅgada, resembling mountains, took up mountain peaks and approached the gate.
Hearing Rāma’s command, the victorious monkeys, heroes, battered the enemy forces with trees.
Then that fierce army of monkeys, with trees and mountain peaks in hand, shone near the mountain like a mighty, fearsome mass of great storm clouds.
Hear now the sixty-second sarga (canto) in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddhakāṇḍa.
That tiger among rākṣasas, overwhelmed by sleep and intoxication, of great might, went along the royal road adorned with splendor.
Surrounded by thousands of rākṣasas, most difficult to conquer, he proceeded, showered with flowers from the houses.
He saw the vast and splendid palace of the king of rākṣasas, adorned with golden lattices and shining like the sun.
Then, like the sun entering a mass of clouds, he entered the palace of the lord of rākṣasas and saw, seated at a distance, his elder brother on a throne, like Indra himself.
As he went to his brother’s palace, accompanied by hosts of rākṣasas, Kumbhakarṇa made the earth tremble with his footsteps.
Approaching his brother’s house and entering the inner chambers, he saw his venerable brother seated, anxious, in the Puṣpaka aerial car.
Then, seeing Kumbhakarṇa present, Daśagrīva quickly rose, delighted, and brought him near.
Then, as Kumbhakarṇa of great strength sat on the couch, he bowed to his brother’s feet and asked, 'What should be done?'
Rāvaṇa, delighted, rose up and embraced him; and he, embraced by his brother, was duly welcomed.
Kumbhakarṇa accepted the auspicious and divine seat; that mighty Kumbhakarṇa then took his place upon it.
With eyes reddened by anger, he spoke to Rāvaṇa: 'For what reason, O king, have you awakened me with such urgency?'
'Tell me, what is this fear of yours here? Who is destined to die?' Thus Rāvaṇa addressed his angry brother Kumbhakarṇa, who stood before him.
With eyes turned in anger, he spoke: 'A very long time has passed for you, O mighty one, lying asleep.'
'Deep in sleep, you did not know the fear caused to me by Rāma. This son of Daśaratha, glorious and strong, has come with Sugrīva.'
'Having crossed the ocean, he is cutting at our very root. Behold, in Laṅkā, the forests and groves.'
'Having come easily by the bridge, the sea has been filled with monkeys. The foremost Rākṣasas have been slain by the monkeys in battle.'
'I do not see any destruction of the monkeys in battle, nor have the monkeys ever been defeated in war.'
'Therefore, this fear has arisen; protect us here, O mighty one. Destroy these enemies today; for this purpose you have been awakened.'
'With all my treasury exhausted, I have come to you. Protect this city of Laṅkā, now left with only children and the aged.'
'For the sake of your brother, O mighty-armed one, perform this most difficult deed. Never before have I spoken thus to any brother, O subduer of foes.'
'In you, and in me, there is affection, and I have the highest regard for you. In battles with gods and asuras, O bull among Rākṣasas, you have often prevailed.'
