तस्य निःश्वासवातेन कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः। राक्षसाः कुम्भकर्णस्य स्थातुं शेकुर्न चाग्रतः
Because of the force of Kumbhakarna's breath, the demons could not stand before him.
ततः परिहिता गाढं राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः। मृदङ्गपणवान् भेरीः शङ्खकुम्भगणांस्तथा
Then, the mighty and terrifying demons tightly gathered drums, kettledrums, war drums, conches, and clusters of water jars.
दश राक्षससाहस्रं युगपत्पर्यवारयत्। नीलाञ्जनचयाकारं ते तु तं प्रत्यबोधयन्
Ten thousand demons at once surrounded him, whose form was like a mass of dark collyrium, and they tried to wake him.
अभिघ्नन्तो नदन्तश्च न च सम्बुबुधे तदा। यदा चैनं न शेकुस्ते प्रतिबोधयितुं तदा
Though they struck him and shouted, he did not awaken; when they could not rouse him,
ततो गुरुतरं यत्नं दारुणं समुपाक्रमन्। अश्वानुष्ट्रान् खरान् नागाञ्जघ्नुर्दण्डकशाङ्कुशैः
Then they undertook an even greater and harsher effort: they struck horses, camels, donkeys, and elephants with sticks and goads.
भेरीशङ्खमृदङ्गांश्च सर्वप्राणैरवादयन्। निजघ्नुश्चास्य गात्राणि महाकाष्ठकटंकरैः
With all their strength, they sounded war drums, conches, and kettledrums, and struck his limbs with great wooden clubs.
मुद्गरैर्मुसलैश्चापि सर्वप्राणसमुद्यतैः। तेन नादेन महता लङ्का सर्वा प्रपूरिता। सपर्वतवना सर्वा सोऽपि नैव प्रबुध्यते
With pestles and clubs, using all their might, they made such a great noise that all of Lanka, with its mountains and forests, was filled—yet even then, he did not wake.
ततो भेरीसहस्रं तु युगपत् समहन्यत। मृष्टकाञ्चनकोणानामसक्तानां समन्ततः
Then, a thousand war drums with polished golden rims were struck at once, resounding on every side.
एवमप्यतिनिद्रस्तु यदा नैव प्रबुध्यते। शापस्य वशमापन्नस्ततः क्रुद्धा निशाचराः
Even so, though overwhelmed by excessive sleep, he did not awaken; under the power of a curse, the enraged night-stalkers,
ततः कोपसमाविष्टाः सर्वे भीमपराक्रमाः। तद् रक्षो बोधयिष्यन्तश्चक्रुरन्ये पराक्रमम्
Then, all the mighty and fierce demons, filled with anger, made further efforts to wake that demon.
अन्ये भेरीः समाजघ्नुरन्ये चक्रुर्महास्वनम्। केशानन्ये प्रलुलुपुः कर्णानन्ये दशन्ति च
Some struck the war drums, others made a great clamor; some pulled his hair, others bit his ears.
उदकुम्भशतानन्ये समसिञ्चन्त कर्णयोः। न कुम्भकर्णः पस्पन्दे महानिद्रावशं गतः
Some poured hundreds of water jars over his ears, but Kumbhakarna, overcome by deep sleep, did not stir.
अन्ये च बलिनस्तस्य कूटमुद्गरपाणयः। मूर्ध्नि वक्षसि गात्रेषु पातयन् कूटमुद्गरान्
Other strong ones, armed with iron mallets, struck his head, chest, and limbs with those heavy clubs.
रज्जुबन्धनबद्धाभिः शतघ्नीभिश्च सर्वतः। वध्यमानो महाकायो न प्राबुध्यत राक्षसः
Even as he was beaten everywhere with hundred-slayers bound with ropes, the great-bodied demon did not awaken.
वारणानां सहस्रं च शरीरेऽस्य प्रधावितम्। कुम्भकर्णस्तदा बुद्ध्वा स्पर्शं परमबुध्यत
A thousand elephants ran over his body; then Kumbhakarna, feeling that touch, became somewhat aware.
स पात्यमानैर्गिरिशृङ्गवृक्षै- रचिन्तयंस्तान् विपुलान् प्रहारान्। निद्राक्षयात् क्षुद्भयपीडितश्च विजृम्भमाणः सहसोत्पपात
As mountain peaks and trees were hurled upon him, he considered those heavy blows; tormented by hunger and fear as sleep diminished, he yawned and suddenly sprang up.
स नागभोगाचलशृङ्गकल्पौ विक्षिप्य बाहू जितवज्रसारौ। विवृत्य वक्त्रं वडवामुखाभं निशाचरोऽसौ विकृतं जजृम्भे
He, whose arms were like the coils of serpents or mountain peaks, stretched out his two arms, hard as diamond; opening his mouth, resembling the maw of a mare, that night-stalker yawned hideously.
तस्य जाजृम्भमाणस्य वक्त्रं पातालसंनिभम्। ददृशे मेरुशृङ्गाग्रे दिवाकर इवोदितः
As he yawned, his mouth appeared like the depths of the underworld, and he was seen like the sun rising atop the peak of Mount Meru.
स जृम्भमाणोऽतिबलः प्रबुद्धस्तु निशाचरः। निःश्वासश्चास्य संजज्ञे पर्वतादिव मारुतः
That exceedingly powerful night-dweller, now awakened and yawning, exhaled a breath that arose like the wind from a mountain.
तस्य दीप्ताग्निसदृशे विद्युत्सदृशवर्चसी। ददृशाते महानेत्रे दीप्ताविव महाग्रहौ
His two great eyes, blazing like burning fire and shining like lightning, appeared like two radiant planets.
ततस्त्वदर्शयन् सर्वान् भक्ष्यांश्च विविधान् बहून्। वराहान् महिषांश्चैव बभक्ष स महाबलः
Then, displaying all sorts of various foods, he, the mighty one, ate many boars and buffaloes.
आदद् बुभुक्षितो मांसं शोणितं तृषितोऽपिबत्। मेदःकुम्भांश्च मद्यांश्च पपौ शक्ररिपुस्तदा
Hungry, he seized meat; thirsty, he drank blood; and he, the foe of Indra, drank vessels of fat and liquor at that time.
ततस्तृप्त इति ज्ञात्वा समुत्पेतुर्निशाचराः। शिरोभिश्च प्रणम्यैनं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्
Then, knowing he was satisfied, the night-dwellers arose, and bowing to him with their heads, surrounded him on all sides.
निद्राविशदनेत्रस्तु कलुषीकृतलोचनः। चारयन् सर्वतो दृष्टिं तान् ददर्श निशाचरान्
His eyes heavy with sleep, his gaze clouded, he looked all around and saw those night-dwellers.
स सर्वान् सान्त्वयामास नैर्ऋतान् नैर्ऋतर्षभः। बोधनाद् विस्मितश्चापि राक्षसानिदमब्रवीत्
He, the foremost among the Rākṣasas, comforted all the Rākṣasas, and, astonished at being awakened, spoke these words to them.
किमर्थमहमादृत्य भवद्भिः प्रतिबोधितः। कच्चित् सुकुशलं राज्ञो भयं वा नेह किंचन
For what reason have you awakened me with such urgency? Is all well with the king? There is no danger here, is there?
अथवा ध्रुवमन्येभ्यो भयं परमुपस्थितम्। यदर्थमेव त्वरितैर्भवद्भिः प्रतिबोधितः
Or perhaps, surely, some great danger has come from elsewhere, for which you have hastily awakened me.
अद्य राक्षसराजस्य भयमुत्पाटयाम्यहम्। दारयिष्ये महेन्द्रं वा शीतयिष्ये तथानलम्
Today I will uproot the fear of the king of the Rākṣasas; I will tear apart even Mahendra, or I will cool the fire itself.
न ह्यल्पकारणे सुप्तं बोधयिष्यति मादृशम्। तदाख्यातार्थतत्त्वेन मत्प्रबोधनकारणम्
Surely, one such as I would not be awakened from sleep for a trivial reason; therefore, tell me truly the reason for awakening me.
एवं ब्रुवाणं संरब्धं कुम्भकर्णमरिंदमम्। यूपाक्षः सचिवो राज्ञः कृताञ्जलिरभाषत
As Kumbhakarṇa, destroyer of foes, spoke thus, agitated, Yūpākṣa, the king’s counselor, with joined palms, spoke.
