Noble one, I am indeed fully capable of killing this wicked one; grant me permission, Lord, and I will slay him.
Rāma, of great splendor and true valor, replied to him: 'Go, and be diligent and steadfast in battle, Lakṣmaṇa.'
For Rāvaṇa is of great might, wondrous in battle; if enraged, he is difficult to overcome even for the three worlds—there is no doubt.
Seek out his vulnerabilities and also be mindful of your own; with focused mind, protect yourself with your eyes and your bow.
Hearing Rāghava's words, Saumitri embraced and honored him, bowed to Rāma, and went forth to the battle.
He saw Rāvaṇa, whose arms were like elephant trunks, brandishing a blazing bow, covering the monkeys—whose bodies were wounded and scattered—with showers of arrows.
Seeing him, the mighty Hanumān, son of the wind, warded off the showers of arrows and rushed at Rāvaṇa.
Approaching his chariot, raising his right arm, Hanumān, the wise one, frightened Rāvaṇa and spoke these words.
You have obtained invulnerability from gods, demons, gandharvas, yakṣas, and rākṣasas; but from the monkeys, you have cause for fear.
Here is my right arm, with five branches, raised; it will destroy your body and release the being that has long dwelled within it.
Hearing Hanumān's words, Rāvaṇa of terrible valor, his eyes red with anger, spoke these words.
Strike quickly and without hesitation; win lasting fame. Then, knowing your strength, I will destroy you, monkey.
Thus addressed, Rāvaṇa, lord of the Rākṣasas and of great splendor, struck the son of the wind powerfully on the chest with his palm.
Struck by that palm, he trembled again and again; yet, standing firm for a moment, the radiant and wise one steadied himself.
Then, enraged, he struck the enemy of the gods with his palm; and thus, struck by that great-souled monkey—
The ten-headed one was shaken, like a mountain on the earth; seeing Ravana thus struck by the palm in battle—
The sages, monkeys, and siddhas roared, and the gods together with the asuras cheered; then, the mighty Ravana spoke to his horse—
"Well done, monkey! For your valor, you are a foe worthy of my praise." Thus addressed by Ravana, the son of the wind replied—
"Shame on my strength, since you still live, Ravana! If I were to strike you once now, wicked one, why do you boast?"
"Then my fist would send you to the abode of Yama!" At Hanuman's words, Ravana's anger blazed forth.
His eyes bloodshot, he clenched his right fist with effort and struck the mighty monkey's chest with great force.
Hanuman, with his broad chest, staggered again and again; seeing the mighty Hanuman thus reeling—
The great chariot-warrior, Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, swiftly advanced in his chariot against Nila.
With dreadful, serpent-like, supremely piercing arrows, he set ablaze Nila, the leader of the monkey army.
Assailed by a torrent of arrows, Nila, the monkey commander, with one hand hurled a mountain peak at the lord of the rakshasas.
Hanuman too, radiant and resolute, regaining his composure, eager for battle, looked on and spoke these angry words—
"It is not fitting to attack Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, while he is engaged in combat with Nila and another."
Then Ravana, of great splendor, struck that peak with seven arrows, their tips exceedingly sharp, and it shattered and fell.
Seeing that shattered mountain peak, the monkey commander blazed with anger like the fire of destruction, slayer of enemy heroes.
Nila hurled in battle Ashvakarna trees, shala trees, mango trees in full bloom, and many other kinds of trees.
