महीं जग्मुर्महावेगा रोषिता इव पन्नगाः। नीलः शरैरभिहतो निशितैर्ज्वलनोपमैः
With great speed, like enraged serpents, they fell to the earth; Neela was struck by sharp arrows, blazing like fire.
स तं परमदुर्धर्षमापतन्तं महाकपिः। प्रहस्तं ताडयामास वृक्षमुत्पाट्य वीर्यवान्
The mighty monkey, Neela, uprooted a tree and struck Prahasta, who was charging fiercely and was exceedingly hard to withstand.
स तेनाभिहतः क्रुद्धो नर्दन् राक्षसपुंगवः। ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि प्लवंगानां चमूपतौ
Struck by that blow, the enraged Prahasta, leader of the rakshasas, roared and showered volleys of arrows upon the monkey troops.
तस्य बाणगणानेव राक्षसस्य दुरात्मनः। अपारयन् वारयितुं प्रत्यगृह्णान्निमीलितः। यथैव गोवृषो वर्षं शारदं शीघ्रमागतम्
Unable to withstand the swarms of arrows from the wicked rakshasa, Neela endured them with closed eyes, just as a bull endures the swift autumn rain.
एवमेव प्रहस्तस्य शरवर्षान् दुरासदान्। निमीलिताक्षः सहसा नीलः सेहे दुरासदान्
In the same way, Neela, with closed eyes, suddenly endured Prahasta's formidable showers of arrows, difficult to withstand.
रोषितः शरवर्षेण सालेन महता महान्। प्रजघान हयान् नीलः प्रहस्तस्य महाबलः
Angered by the rain of arrows, Neela, mighty in strength, struck Prahasta's horses with a great sal tree.
ततो रोषपरीतात्मा धनुस्तस्य दुरात्मनः। बभञ्ज तरसा नीलो ननाद च पुनः पुनः
Then Neela, his mind seized by wrath, swiftly broke the bow of the wicked Prahasta and roared again and again.
विधनुः स कृतस्तेन प्रहस्तो वाहिनीपतिः। प्रगृह्य मुसलं घोरं स्यन्दनादवपुप्लुवे
Deprived of his bow by Neela, Prahasta, the commander, seized a dreadful mace and leapt from his chariot.
तावुभौ वाहिनीमुख्यौ जातवैरौ तरस्विनौ। स्थितौ क्षतजसिक्ताङ्गौ प्रभिन्नाविव कुञ्जरौ
Both leaders of their armies, now enemies and full of vigor, stood with bodies drenched in blood, like two elephants with broken tusks.
उल्लिखन्तौ सुतीक्ष्णाभिर्दंष्ट्राभिरितरेतरम्। सिंहशार्दूलसदृशौ सिंहशार्दूलचेष्टितौ
Tearing at each other with sharp fangs, resembling lions and tigers, and acting as lions and tigers do.
विक्रान्तविजयौ वीरौ समरेष्वनिवर्तिनौ। काङ्क्षमाणौ यशः प्राप्तुं वृत्रवासवयोरिव
Both heroes, mighty and victorious, unwavering in battle, longing to attain glory like Vritra and Indra.
आजघान तदा नीलं ललाटे मुसलेन सः। प्रहस्तः परमायत्तस्ततः सुस्राव शोणितम्
Then Prahasta, exerting his utmost strength, struck Nīla on the forehead with his mace, and blood flowed forth.
ततः शोणितदिग्धाङ्गः प्रगृह्य च महातरुम्। प्रहस्तस्योरसि क्रुद्धो विससर्ज महाकपिः
Thereafter, his body smeared with blood, the great monkey, seizing a huge tree, angrily hurled it at Prahasta's chest.
तमचिन्त्यप्रहारं स प्रगृह्य मुसलं महत्। अभिदुद्राव बलिनं बलान्नीलं प्लवङ्गमम्
Grasping his massive mace, Prahasta rushed powerfully at Nīla, the mighty vanara, who had delivered that astonishing blow.
तमुग्रवेगं संरब्धमापतन्तं महाकपिः। ततः सम्प्रेक्ष्य जग्राह महावेगो महाशिलाम्
Seeing Prahasta charging with fierce speed and rage, the great monkey, swift as the wind, seized a massive boulder.
तस्य युद्धाभिकामस्य मृधे मुसलयोधिनः। प्रहस्तस्य शिलां नीलो मूर्ध्नि तूर्णमपातयत्
As Prahasta, eager for battle and skilled with the mace, advanced in the fight, Nīla swiftly brought the boulder down upon his head.
नीलेन कपिमुख्येन विमुक्ता महती शिला। बिभेद बहुधा घोरा प्रहस्तस्य शिरस्तदा
That great boulder, hurled by Nīla, chief of the monkeys, shattered Prahasta's dreadful head into many pieces.
स गतासुर्गतश्रीको गतसत्त्वो गतेन्द्रियः। पपात सहसा भूमौ छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः
His life, splendor, strength, and senses gone, Prahasta suddenly fell to the ground like a tree whose roots have been cut.
विभिन्नशिरसस्तस्य बहु सुस्राव शोणितम्। शरीरादपि सुस्राव गिरेः प्रस्रवणं यथा
From his shattered head, much blood poured forth, and from his body as well, like a stream flowing from a mountain.
हते प्रहस्ते नीलेन तदकम्प्यं महाबलम्। राक्षसानामहृष्टानां लङ्कामभिजगाम ह
When Prahasta, that mighty and unshakable one, was slain by Nīla, the delighted rākṣasas returned to Lankā.
हते तस्मिंश्चमूमुख्ये राक्षसास्ते निरुद्यमाः। रक्षःपतिगृहं गत्वा ध्यानमूकत्वमागताः
With that commander of the host slain, the rākṣasas, their efforts exhausted, went to the lord of the rākṣasas' house and fell silent in meditation.
प्राप्ताः शोकार्णवं तीव्रं विसंज्ञा इव तेऽभवन्
They entered a fierce ocean of grief and became as if unconscious.
ततस्तु नीलो विजयी महाबलः प्रशस्यमानः सुकृतेन कर्मणा। समेत्य रामेण सलक्ष्मणेन प्रहृष्टरूपस्तु बभूव यूथपः
Then Nīla, the victorious and mighty leader, praised for his noble deed, joined Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, and the chief of the troops became radiant with joy.

तस्मिन् हते राक्षससैन्यपाले प्लवंगमानामृषभेण युद्धे। भीमायुधं सागरवेगतुल्यं विदुद्रुवे राक्षसराजसैन्यम्
When Prahasta, the guardian of the rākṣasa army, was slain in battle by the foremost of the vanaras, the rākṣasa king's army, armed with terrible weapons and swift as the ocean's surge, fled.
गत्वा तु रक्षोधिपतेः शशंसुः सेनापतिं पावकसूनुशस्तम्। तच्चापि तेषां वचनं निशम्य रक्षोधिपः क्रोधवशं जगाम
Going to the lord of the rākṣasas, they reported that the commander had been slain by the son of Agni; hearing their words, the rākṣasa lord was overcome by anger.
संख्ये प्रहस्तं निहतं निशम्य क्रोधार्दितः शोकपरीतचेताः। उवाच तान् राक्षसयूथमुख्या- निन्द्रो यथा निर्जरयूथमुख्यान्
Hearing in the midst of battle that Prahasta was slain, tormented by anger and filled with grief, he spoke to the chiefs of the rākṣasa troops as Indra would to the leaders of the immortals.
नावज्ञा रिपवे कार्या यैरिन्द्रबलसादनः। सूदितः सैन्यपालो मे सानुयात्रः सकुञ्जरः
No enemy should be underestimated, for he who destroyed Indra's forces has slain my army's commander, along with his retinue and elephants.
सोऽहं रिपुविनाशाय विजयायाविचारयन्। स्वयमेव गमिष्यामि रणशीर्षं तदद्भुतम्
Therefore, intent on the destruction of the enemy and victory, I myself, without hesitation, shall go to the forefront of battle, that wondrous field.
अद्य तद् वानरानीकं रामं च सहलक्ष्मणम्। निर्दहिष्यामि बाणौघैर्वनं दीप्तैरिवाग्निभिः। अद्य संतर्पयिष्यामि पृथिवीं कपिशोणितैः
Today I will burn up that army of monkeys, along with Rama and Lakshmana, with showers of arrows blazing like fire in a forest; today I will satisfy the earth with the blood of the monkeys.
