गजांश्च सगजारोहान् सरथान् रथिनस्तथा। जघान हनुमान् धीमान् राक्षसांश्च पदातिगान्
Hanuman, wise and powerful, slew elephants along with their riders, chariots with their warriors, and rakshasa foot soldiers.
तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं सद्रुमं प्राणहारिणम्। हनूमन्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसा विप्रदुद्रुवुः
Seeing Hanuman, furious and deadly, wielding a tree and destroying lives like Death himself, the rakshasas fled in terror.
तमापतन्तं संक्रुद्धं राक्षसानां भयावहम्। ददर्शाकम्पनो वीरश्चुक्षोभ च ननाद च
Akampana, the heroic rakshasa, saw Hanuman rushing in wrath, a terror to the rakshasas, and was shaken and roared aloud.
स चतुर्दशभिर्बाणैर्निशितैर्देहदारणैः। निर्बिभेद महावीर्यं हनूमन्तमकम्पनः
Then Akampana, of great valor, pierced Hanuman with fourteen sharp arrows that could rend the body.
स तथा विप्रकीर्णस्तु नाराचैः शितशक्तिभिः। हनूमान् ददृशे वीरः प्ररूढ इव सानुमान्
Thus scattered by those barbed, keen-tipped arrows, Hanuman, the heroic one, appeared like a mountain overgrown with trees.
विरराज महावीर्यो महाकायो महाबलः। पुष्पिताशोकसंकाशो विधूम इव पावकः
That mighty, large-bodied, and powerful Hanuman shone like a blossoming Ashoka tree, or like a smokeless fire.
ततोऽन्यं वृक्षमुत्पाट्य कृत्वा वेगमनुत्तमम्। शिरस्याभिजघानाशु राक्षसेन्द्रमकम्पनम्
Then, uprooting another tree and gathering tremendous speed, he swiftly struck the head of Akampana, the lord of the Rakshasas.
स वृक्षेण हतस्तेन सक्रोधेन महात्मना। राक्षसो वानरेन्द्रेण पपात च ममार च
Struck by that tree in anger by the great-souled Hanuman, the Rakshasa was felled by the lord of monkeys and died.
तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं भूमौ राक्षसेन्द्रमकम्पनम्। व्यथिता राक्षसाः सर्वे क्षितिकम्प इव द्रुमाः
Seeing Akampana, the lord of the Rakshasas, slain on the ground, all the Rakshasas were distressed, like trees shaken by an earthquake.
त्यक्तप्रहरणाः सर्वे राक्षसास्ते पराजिताः। लङ्कामभिययुस्त्रासाद् वानरैस्तैरभिद्रुताः
All those defeated Rakshasas, abandoning their weapons, fled in fear toward Lanka, pursued by the monkeys.
ते मुक्तकेशाः सम्भ्रान्ता भग्नमानाः पराजिताः। भयाच्छ्रमजलैरङ्गैः प्रस्रवद्भिर्विदुद्रुवुः
With hair disheveled, confused, their pride broken and defeated, they fled, their limbs streaming with sweat from fear and exhaustion.
अन्योन्यं ये प्रमथ्नन्तो विविशुर्नगरं भयात्। पृष्ठतस्ते तु सम्मूढाः प्रेक्षमाणा मुहुर्मुहुः
Striking one another as they went, they entered the city out of fear, looking back again and again, bewildered.
तेषु लङ्कां प्रविष्टेषु राक्षसेषु महाबलाः। समेत्य हरयः सर्वे हनूमन्तमपूजयन्
When those Rakshasas of great strength had entered Lanka, all the monkeys gathered and honored Hanuman.
सोऽपि प्रवृद्धस्तान् सर्वान् हरीन् सम्प्रत्यपूजयत्। हनूमान् सत्त्वसम्पन्नो यथार्हमनुकूलतः
And Hanuman, endowed with virtue, in turn honored all the monkeys appropriately and with goodwill.
विनेदुश्च यथाप्राणं हरयो जितकाशिनः। चकृषुश्च पुनस्तत्र सप्राणानेव राक्षसान्
The victorious monkeys shouted with all their might, and once more regarded the Rakshasas there as if they were still alive.
स वीरशोभामभजन्महाकपिः समेत्य रक्षांसि निहत्य मारुतिः। महासुरं भीमममित्रनाशनं विष्णुर्यथैवोरुबलं चमूमुखे
That great monkey, Maruti, having slain the Rakshasas, attained the splendor of a hero, like Vishnu, the destroyer of enemies, with his vast power on the battlefield after slaying the mighty, fearsome demon.
अपूजयन् देवगणास्तदाकपिं स्वयं च रामोऽतिबलश्च लक्ष्मणः। तथैव सुग्रीवमुखाः प्लवंगमा विभीषणश्चैव महाबलस्तदा
Then the hosts of gods, as well as Rama, the exceedingly strong Lakshmana, Sugriva and the other monkeys, and Vibhishana of great strength, all honored the monkey.

Hearing of Akampana's death, the lord of the Rakshasas became angry and, his face somewhat downcast, looked at his ministers.
स तु ध्यात्वा मुहूर्तं तु मन्त्रिभिः संविचार्य च। ततस्तु रावणः पूर्वदिवसे राक्षसाधिपः। पुरीं परिययौ लङ्कां सर्वान् गुल्मानवेक्षितुम्
After pondering for a moment and consulting with his counselors, then Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas, at dawn went around the city of Lanka to inspect all the battalions.
तां राक्षसगणैर्गुप्तां गुल्मैर्बहुभिरावृताम्। ददर्श नगरीं राजा पताकाध्वजमालिनीम्
The king saw the city, guarded by hosts of Rakshasas and surrounded by many battalions, adorned with banners and flags.
रुद्धां तु नगरीं दृष्ट्वा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः। उवाचात्महितं काले प्रहस्तं युद्धकोविदम्
Seeing the city besieged, Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, spoke timely words for his own welfare to Prahasta, skilled in battle.
पुरस्योपनिविष्टस्य सहसा पीडितस्य ह। नान्ययुद्धात् प्रपश्यामि मोक्षं युद्धविशारद
With the city suddenly surrounded and under pressure, I see no escape except through battle, O expert in warfare.
अहं वा कुम्भकर्णो वा त्वं वा सेनापतिर्मम। इन्द्रजिद् वा निकुम्भो वा वहेयुर्भारमीदृशम्
Either I, or Kumbhakarṇa, or you, my general, or Indrajit, or Nikumbha—one of us must bear this heavy burden.
स त्वं बलमतः शीघ्रमादाय परिगृह्य च। विजयायाभिनिर्याहि यत्र सर्वे वनौकसः
Therefore, quickly gather and assemble the army, and march out for victory to where all the forest-dwellers are.
निर्याणादेव तूर्णं च चलिता हरिवाहिनी। नर्दतां राक्षसेन्द्राणां श्रुत्वा नादं द्रविष्यति
As soon as you sally forth, the monkey army will swiftly scatter, hearing the roar of the rākṣasa lords.
चपला ह्यविनीताश्च चलचित्ताश्च वानराः। न सहिष्यन्ति ते नादं सिंहनादमिव द्विपाः
For the monkeys are fickle, unruly, and unstable in mind; they will not withstand your roar, like elephants before a lion’s cry.
विद्रुते च बले तस्मिन् रामः सौमित्रिणा सह। अवशस्ते निरालम्बः प्रहस्त वशमेष्यति
When that army flees, Rāma, together with Lakṣmaṇa, will be helpless and unsupported, Prahasta, and will fall under your power.
आपत्संशयिता श्रेयो नात्र निःसंशयीकृता। प्रतिलोमानुलोमं वा यत् तु नो मन्यसे हितम्
In times of crisis, what is best is uncertain; there is no certainty here. Whether contrary or agreeable, speak what you think is beneficial for us.
रावणेनैवमुक्तस्तु प्रहस्तो वाहिनीपतिः। राक्षसेन्द्रमुवाचेदमसुरेन्द्रमिवोशना
Thus addressed by Rāvaṇa, Prahasta, the commander of the army, spoke to the lord of the rākṣasas as Uśanā did to the lord of the asuras.
