For the sake of Rāma and Rāvaṇa, all, having wholly abandoned concern for their bodies, were exceedingly mighty, heroic, and mountain-like.
The monkeys and Rākṣasas, intent on destroying each other, their voices resounded in the battle, swift and tumultuous.
A great roar was heard, as they angrily challenged one another; the dust, copper-hued, became exceedingly dreadful.
Raised by the monkeys and Rākṣasas, the dust blocked the ten directions; by that silken, pale dust, they were obscured from each other.
Creatures on the battlefield could not be seen; neither banner nor flag, nor shield nor horse was visible.
Neither weapon nor chariot could be seen through that dust; only the immense sound of their roaring and charging was heard.
In that tumultuous battle, only the noise was heard; forms were not visible. The monkeys, fiercely engaged, struck down the Rākṣasas in the fight.
At that time, the rākṣasas struck down rākṣasas in the darkness, and the vānaras and rākṣasas, while killing their enemies, also slew their own.
Then they made the earth soaked with blood, as if smeared with mud; and with the streams of blood, the dust was washed away.
The earth became covered with bodies and corpses, and with trees, spears, maces, lances, rocks, iron clubs, and javelins.
The rākṣasas and monkeys swiftly struck each other with force, fighting with arms like iron clubs, resembling mountains.
The monkeys of terrible deeds struck down rākṣasas in battle; and the rākṣasas, greatly enraged and armed with lances and javelins,
There, they struck down the monkeys with exceedingly dreadful weapons; Akampana, the commander of the rākṣasa army, greatly enraged,
Encouraged all those rākṣasas of terrible valor; but the monkeys, too, attacked the rākṣasas with great trees and huge rocks,
Rushing forward, they tore apart the rākṣasas, breaking their weapons with their strength.
Meanwhile, the heroic monkeys Kumuda, Nala, Mainda, and Dvivida, enraged, displayed unmatched speed.
Those foremost of monkeys, with great valor, wrought a massive slaughter at the front of the rākṣasa army, playfully wielding trees; all of them fiercely crushed the rākṣasas with various weapons.
Listen to the fifty-sixth sarga (canto). Thus ends the fifty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Seeing the great feat accomplished by the foremost of monkeys, Akampana became intensely enraged in battle.
Seized by wrath, that rākṣasa, brandishing his mighty bow, upon witnessing the deeds of the enemies, spoke to his charioteer.
Right there, at once, hasten the chariot, O charioteer; these powerful ones are slaying many rākṣasas in battle.
These strong and terribly enraged monkeys, wielding trees and mountains as weapons, stand before me.
I wish to kill these, who boast of their prowess in battle; for the entire strength of the rākṣasas appears to have been crushed by them.
Then, with his chariot drawn by swift horses, that foremost of charioteers, Akampana, attacked the monkeys from a distance with volleys of arrows.
The monkeys could not stand their ground, much less fight; all of them, broken by Akampana's arrows, fled in every direction.
Seeing his kin, struck down by Akampana's arrows and fallen under the sway of death, Hanuman, mighty in strength, approached them.
Beholding that great monkey, all the foremost monkeys gathered joyfully around him on the battlefield.
Seeing Hanuman standing firm, those leading monkeys became strong themselves, for they had joined with the strong.
Akampana, seeing Hanuman standing like a mountain, showered him with arrows, as Mahendra pours down with streams.
The mighty monkey, disregarding the torrents of arrows falling upon his body, fixed his mind on slaying Akampana.
