शरैर्विदारयामास कङ्कपत्रैरजिह्मगैः। बिभेद वानरांस्तत्र सप्ताष्टौ नव पञ्च च
With arrows tipped like heron's feathers, straight and sharp, he pierced the monkeys there—seven, eight, nine, and five.
विव्याध परमक्रुद्धो वज्रदंष्ट्रः प्रतापवान्। त्रस्ताः सर्वे हरिगणाः शरैः संकृत्तदेहिनः। अङ्गदं सम्प्रधावन्ति प्रजापतिमिव प्रजाः
Vajradamstra, blazing with fury and valor, struck down the monkeys, their bodies cut by arrows; all the monkey hosts, terrified, fled to Angada as people to their creator.
ततो हरिगणान् भग्नान् दृष्ट्वा वालिसुतस्तदा। क्रोधेन वज्रदंष्ट्रं तमुदीक्षन्तमुदैक्षत
Then, seeing the monkey troops broken, Angada, son of Vali, gazed at Vajradamstra, who was looking at him in anger.
वज्रदंष्ट्रोऽङ्गदश्चोभौ योयुध्येते परस्परम्। चेरतुः परमक्रुद्धौ हरिमत्तगजाविव
Vajradamstra and Angada, both filled with wrath, fought each other like two enraged elephants.
ततः शतसहस्रेण हरिपुत्रं महाबलम्। जघान मर्मदेशेषु शरैरग्निशिखोपमैः
Then, with a hundred thousand arrows blazing like tongues of fire, he struck the mighty son of the monkey chief in his vital points.
रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गो वालिसूनुर्महाबलः। चिक्षेप वज्रदंष्ट्राय वृक्षं भीमपराक्रमः
Angada, the powerful son of Vali, his whole body stained with blood, hurled a tree at Vajradamstra with terrifying force.
दृष्ट्वा पतन्तं तं वृक्षमसम्भ्रान्तश्च राक्षसः। चिच्छेद बहुधा सोऽपि मथितः प्रापतद् भुवि
Seeing the tree flying toward him, the rakshasa remained unshaken and cut it into many pieces; shattered, it fell to the ground.
तं दृष्ट्वा वज्रदंष्ट्रस्य विक्रमं प्लवगर्षभः। प्रगृह्य विपुलं शैलं चिक्षेप च ननाद च
Witnessing Vajradamstra's prowess, the foremost of monkeys seized a great mountain and hurled it, roaring loudly.
तमापतन्तं दृष्ट्वा स रथादाप्लुत्य वीर्यवान्। गदापाणिरसम्भ्रान्तः पृथिव्यां समतिष्ठत
Seeing it rushing toward him, the valiant one leapt from his chariot, mace in hand, and stood firmly upon the earth, unshaken.
अङ्गदेन शिला क्षिप्ता गत्वा तु रणमूर्धनि। सचक्रकूबरं साश्वं प्रममाथ रथं तदा
The rock hurled by Angada landed in the midst of the battle and crushed his chariot, along with its wheels, pole, and horses.
ततोऽन्यच्छिखरं गृह्य विपुलं द्रुमभूषितम्। वज्रदंष्ट्रस्य शिरसि पातयामास वानरः
Then, seizing another massive, tree-covered peak, the monkey hurled it down upon Vajradamstra's head.
अभवच्छोणितोद्गारी वज्रदंष्ट्रः सुमूर्च्छितः। मुहूर्तमभवन्मूढो गदामालिङ्ग्य निःश्वसन्
Vajradaṃṣṭra, his fangs like thunderbolts, blood streaming forth, was for a moment stunned, embracing his mace and breathing heavily.
स लब्धसंज्ञो गदया वालिपुत्रमवस्थितम्। जघान परमक्रुद्धो वक्षोदेशे निशाचरः
Regaining his senses, the night-stalker, filled with intense rage, struck Vāli's son, who stood before him, upon the chest with his mace.
गदां त्यक्त्वा ततस्तत्र मुष्टियुद्धमकुर्वत। अन्योन्यं जघ्नतुस्तत्र तावुभौ हरिराक्षसौ
Then, casting aside their maces, the monkey and the rākṣasa engaged in fist-fighting there, each striking the other.
रुधिरोद्गारिणौ तौ तु प्रहारैर्जनितश्रमौ। बभूवतुः सुविक्रान्तावङ्गारकबुधाविव
Both, streaming with blood and weary from the blows, stood firm and valiant, like Mars and Mercury blazing in the sky.
ततः परमतेजस्वी अङ्गदः प्लवगर्षभः। उत्पाट्य वृक्षं स्थितवानासीत् पुष्पफलैर्युतः
Then Angada, the foremost of monkeys and radiant in might, uprooted a tree laden with flowers and fruits and stood ready.
जग्राह चार्षभं चर्म खड्गं च विपुलं शुभम्। किङ्किणीजालसंछन्नं चर्मणा च परिष्कृतम्
He seized a splendid, broad sword and a bull's hide adorned with a network of bells, and girded himself with the hide.
चित्रांश्च रुचिरान् मार्गांश्चेरतुः कपिराक्षसौ। जघ्नतुश्च तदान्योन्यं नर्दन्तौ जयकांक्षिणौ
The monkey and the rākṣasa roamed the field along dazzling, beautiful paths, striking each other as they roared, each eager for victory.
व्रणैः सास्रैरशोभेतां पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ। युध्यमानौ परिश्रान्तौ जानुभ्यामवनीं गतौ
Covered with bloody wounds, they shone like blossoming kimśuka trees, and, exhausted from fighting, both sank to their knees on the ground.
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण अङ्गदः कपिकुञ्जरः। उदतिष्ठत दीप्ताक्षो दण्डाहत इवोरगः
In the span of a blink, Angada, the elephant among monkeys, his eyes blazing, rose up like a serpent struck by a staff.
निर्मलेन सुधौतेन खड्गेनास्य महच्छिरः। जघान वज्रदंष्ट्रस्य वालिसूनुर्महाबलः
With a spotless, well-washed sword, Vāli's mighty son struck off the great head of Vajradaṃṣṭra.
रुधिरोक्षितगात्रस्य बभूव पतितं द्विधा। तच्च तस्य परीताक्षं शुभं खड्गहतं शिरः
His body, drenched in blood, fell in two, and his beautiful, sword-severed head, its eyes wide, lay apart.
वज्रदंष्ट्रं हतं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसा भयमोहिताः। त्रस्ता ह्यभ्यद्रवँल्लङ्कां वध्यमानाः प्लवङ्गमैः। विषण्णवदना दीना ह्रिया किंचिदवाङ्मुखाः
Seeing Vajradaṃṣṭra slain, the rākṣasas, terrified and bewildered, fled toward Laṅkā, pursued and struck down by the monkeys, their faces downcast, dejected, and shamed.
निहत्य तं वज्रधरः प्रतापवान् स वालिसूनुः कपिसैन्यमध्ये। जगाम हर्षं महितो महाबलः सहस्रनेत्रस्त्रिदशैरिवावृतः
Having slain Vajradaṃṣṭra, the illustrious and mighty son of Vāli rejoiced in the midst of the monkey army, like thousand-eyed Indra surrounded by the gods.

Hearing that Vajradaṃṣṭra was slain by Vāli's son, Rāvaṇa spoke to the commander of his forces, who stood before him with joined palms.
शीघ्रं निर्यान्तुदुर्धर्षा राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः। अकम्पनं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रकोविदम्
Let the indomitable and mighty rākṣasas march out quickly, led by Akampana, master of all weapons and missiles.
एष शास्ता च गोप्ता च नेता च युधि सत्तमः। भूतिकामश्च मे नित्यं नित्यं च समरप्रियः
