Seeing the army distressed and afflicted by Dhūmrākṣa, Hanuman, enraged, advanced, seizing a massive rock.
His eyes reddened with doubled fury, equal in valor to his father, he hurled that rock at Dhūmrākṣa's chariot.
Seeing the rock rushing toward him, Dhūmrākṣa, alarmed, leapt swiftly from his chariot to the ground, raising his mace.
That rock smashed his chariot and fell to the earth, destroying its wheels, yoke, horses, banner, and bow.
Having shattered his chariot, Hanuman, son of the wind, began slaughtering the demons with trees, branches, and trunks.
Some demons, their heads split and bodies drenched in blood, were crushed by trees and fell to the ground.
Hanuman, son of the wind, routed the demon army, then seized a mountain peak and charged at Dhūmrākṣa.
As Hanuman rushed at him, Dhūmrākṣa, mighty and roaring, raised his mace and charged at Hanuman.
In his wrath, Dhūmrākṣa hurled his spiked mace at Hanuman's head.
Struck there by that fearsome, swift mace, Hanuman, strong as the wind, disregarded the blow.
He struck Dhūmrākṣa in the middle of the head with the mountain peak, his whole body swelling from the blow.
He fell suddenly to the ground, like a shattered mountain; seeing Dhūmrākṣa slain, the surviving night-dwellers, terrified and struck down by the monkeys, fled into Lanka.
The son of the wind, having slain his foes and scattered streams of blood, weary from killing his enemies, was honored by the monkeys and filled with joy.

Hear now the fifty-third sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Hearing that Dhūmrākṣa had been slain, Rāvaṇa, lord of the demons, was seized by great anger, breathing heavily like a serpent.
Breathing long and hot, his mind clouded by wrath, he spoke to the cruel, mighty demon Vajradaṃṣṭra.
Go, hero, set out surrounded by demons; slay Rāma, son of Daśaratha, or Sugrīva with the monkeys.
Having said, 'So be it,' the master of the Rakshasas, skilled in illusion, swiftly set out, surrounded by many troops.
He was well-prepared, accompanied by elephants, horses, camels, and mules, adorned with many banners and flags.
Then, adorned with a marvelous armlet and crown, he quickly emerged, his slender body covered, carrying his bow.
Having circled his radiant chariot, decorated with banners and blazing with refined gold, the commander mounted it.
With spears, lances, ornate and smooth maces, slings, bows, javelins, and swords,
With swords, discs, maces, and sharp axes, the foot soldiers went forth, each holding various weapons.
All the foremost Rakshasas, splendid in their diverse garments, and the mighty, fierce elephants, moved like mountains.
Those skilled in battle mounted, holding lances and goads; others, marked by auspicious signs, were heroic and of great strength.
That entire Rakshasa army, setting out, shone like thunderclouds in the rainy season, roaring with lightning.
They emerged from the southern gate, where Angada was the leader; as they came out, an evil omen appeared.
Then, from the dense sky, fierce meteors fell, emitting streams of fire, and dreadful jackals howled ominously.
Terrible beasts cried out, foretelling the Rakshasas' destruction; as the warriors advanced, they stumbled fearfully there.
Seeing these portents, Vajradamshtra, mighty and radiant, gathered his courage and came out, eager for battle.
