Though being torn apart by the rākṣasas, those mighty monkeys, emboldened by wrath, performed deeds without fear.
Their bodies pierced by arrows, their limbs torn by spears, the monkey chiefs seized trees and rocks there.
Those monkeys, roaring again and again with terrible speed, crushed the heroic rakshasas and called out their names.
Then there arose a wondrous and dreadful battle between monkeys and rakshasas, with many rocks and countless-branching trees.
Some rakshasas, crushed by the victorious monkeys, vomited blood; others, who fed on blood, spewed it from their mouths.
Some were torn at the sides, some were heaped up with trees, some were pulverized by rocks, and some were ripped apart by teeth.
Some night-stalkers, struck by shattered and broken banners, by fallen swords, and by destroyed chariots, were afflicted.
The earth was strewn with great elephants, mountain-like in form, with mountain peaks hurled by the forest-dwellers, and with trampled horses.
By monkeys of terrible valor, leaping swiftly again and again, rakshasas were torn open at the mouth by sharp nails.
With faces cast down, hair disheveled, bewildered by the smell of blood, they fell to the ground.
But other rakshasas, exceedingly enraged and of terrible prowess, rushed at the monkeys with their palms alone, hard as thunderbolts.
Those rakshasas, though swift, were struck down by monkeys even swifter, beaten with fists, feet, teeth, and trees.
Seeing his army in flight, Dhumraksha, the foremost of rakshasas, in fury began a slaughter of the monkeys who wished to fight.

Some monkeys, crushed by spears and streaming with blood, struck by maces, fell to the ground.
Some were battered by iron clubs, some torn by sling-stones, some crushed by lances, staggering as they lost their lives.
Some forest-dwellers, slain, lay on the ground soaked in blood; some, routed, vanished, driven off by the enraged rakshasas in battle.
Some, with hearts split open, lay on one side; some, pierced by tridents, had their entrails spilling out.
That great and terrifying battle, crowded with monkeys and rakshasas, shone forth, thick with weapons, rocks, and trees.
The twang of bowstrings, the sweet sound of triple drums, the rhythm of hiccups, and the low thunder-like singing made that battle resemble a Gandharva performance.
Dhūmrākṣa, with bow in hand, laughed as he drove the monkeys in all directions on the battlefield with showers of arrows.
Seeing the army distressed and afflicted by Dhūmrākṣa, Hanuman, enraged, advanced, seizing a massive rock.
His eyes reddened with doubled fury, equal in valor to his father, he hurled that rock at Dhūmrākṣa's chariot.
Seeing the rock rushing toward him, Dhūmrākṣa, alarmed, leapt swiftly from his chariot to the ground, raising his mace.
That rock smashed his chariot and fell to the earth, destroying its wheels, yoke, horses, banner, and bow.
Having shattered his chariot, Hanuman, son of the wind, began slaughtering the demons with trees, branches, and trunks.
Some demons, their heads split and bodies drenched in blood, were crushed by trees and fell to the ground.
Hanuman, son of the wind, routed the demon army, then seized a mountain peak and charged at Dhūmrākṣa.
As Hanuman rushed at him, Dhūmrākṣa, mighty and roaring, raised his mace and charged at Hanuman.
In his wrath, Dhūmrākṣa hurled his spiked mace at Hanuman's head.
Struck there by that fearsome, swift mace, Hanuman, strong as the wind, disregarded the blow.
