नेमं मोक्षयितुं शक्ताः शरबन्धं सुदारुणम्। मायाबलादिन्द्रजिता निर्मितं क्रूरकर्मणा
"—are able to release this dreadful bond of serpentine arrows, created by Indrajit through his cruel deeds and magical power."
एते नागाः काद्रवेयास्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रा विषोल्बणाः। रक्षोमायाप्रभावेण शरभूतास्त्वदाश्रयाः
"These serpents are the offspring of Kadrū, with sharp fangs and filled with poison; by the power of Rākṣasa magic, they have taken the form of arrows and are under your control."
इमं श्रुत्वा तु वृत्तान्तं त्वरमाणोऽहमागतः। सहसैवावयोः स्नेहात् सखित्वमनुपालयन्
"Hearing of this event, I came here quickly, out of affection and friendship for you both, to fulfill the duty of a friend."
मोक्षितौ च महाघोरादस्मात् सायकबन्धनात्। अप्रमादश्च कर्तव्यो युवाभ्यां नित्यमेव हि
"You have been freed from this terrible bondage of arrows; but you must always remain vigilant."
प्रकृत्या राक्षसाः सर्वे संग्रामे कूटयोधिनः। शूराणां शुद्धभावानां भवतामार्जवं बलम्
"By nature, all Rākṣasas are deceitful fighters in battle; your strength lies in your straightforwardness and pure intentions."
तन्न विश्वसनीयं वो राक्षसानां रणाजिरे। एतेनैवोपमानेन नित्यं जिह्मा हि राक्षसाः
"Therefore, you should never trust Rākṣasas on the battlefield; by their very nature, they are always crooked."
एवमुक्त्वा तदा रामं सुपर्णः स महाबलः। परिष्वज्य च सुस्निग्धमाप्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे
Having spoken thus to Rāma, the mighty Suparṇa affectionately embraced him and prepared to take his leave.
सखे राघव धर्मज्ञ रिपूणामपि वत्सल। अभ्यनुज्ञातुमिच्छामि गमिष्यामि यथासुखम्
Friend Rāghava, knower of righteousness, compassionate even to your enemies, I wish to take your leave; I will go as I please.
न च कौतूहलं कार्यं सखित्वं प्रति राघव। कृतकर्मा रणे वीर सखित्वं प्रतिवेत्स्यसि
Do not be concerned about our friendship, Rāghava; O hero, I have fulfilled my duty in battle, and you will remember our friendship.
बालवृद्धावशेषां तु लङ्कां कृत्वा शरोर्मिभिः। रावणं तु रिपुं हत्वा सीतां त्वमुपलप्स्यसे
After reducing Laṅkā to only children and the aged with waves of arrows, and having slain Rāvaṇa your enemy, you will recover Sītā.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं सुपर्णः शीघ्रविक्रमः। रामं च नीरुजं कृत्वा मध्ये तेषां वनौकसाम्
Having spoken thus, the swift-winged Suparṇa made Rāma free of pain in the midst of those forest-dwellers.
प्रदक्षिणं ततः कृत्वा परिष्वज्य च वीर्यवान्। जगामाकाशमाविश्य सुपर्णः पवनो यथा
Then, circling him to the right and embracing him with strength, Suparṇa entered the sky like the wind.
नीरुजौ राघवौ दृष्ट्वा ततो वानरयूथपाः। सिंहनादं तदा नेदुर्लाङ्गूलं दुधुवुश्च ते
Seeing the Rāghavas free from pain, the monkey chiefs then roared like lions and shook their tails.
ततो भेरीः समाजघ्नुर्मृदङ्गांश्चाप्यवादयन्। दध्मुः शङ्खान् सम्प्रहृष्टाः क्ष्वेलन्त्यपि यथापुरम्
Then, overjoyed, they beat drums and played mridangas, blew conches, and shouted as before.
अपरे स्फोट्य विक्रान्ता वानरा नगयोधिनः। द्रुमानुत्पाट्य विविधांस्तस्थुः शतसहस्रशः
Other mighty monkeys, skilled in mountain warfare, uprooted various trees and stood in hundreds of thousands.
विसृजन्तो महानादांस्त्रासयन्तो निशाचरान्। लङ्काद्वाराण्युपाजग्मुर्योद्धुकामाः प्लवंगमाः
Uttering great roars and terrifying the night-dwellers, the monkeys approached the gates of Laṅkā, eager for battle.
तेषां सुभीमस्तुमुलो निनादो बभूव शाखामृगयूथपानाम्। क्षये निदाघस्य यथा घनानां नादः सुभीमो नदतां निशीथे
The exceedingly dreadful and tumultuous roar of those monkey chiefs was like the terrible sound of clouds thundering at midnight at the end of the hot season.

Just as a great sound arises from many delighted monkeys assembled, like the rumbling of clouds—
सुव्यक्तं महती प्रीतिरेतेषां नात्र संशयः। तथाहि विपुलैर्नादैश्चुक्षुभे लवणार्णवः
It is clear there is great joy among them, there is no doubt; for even the ocean is agitated by their mighty cries.
तौ तु बद्धौ शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। अयं च सुमहान् नादः शङ्कां जनयतीव मे
Yet those two brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, are bound with sharp arrows, and this great noise gives rise to suspicion in me.
एवं च वचनं चोक्त्वा मन्त्रिणो राक्षसेश्वरः। उवाच नैर्ऋतांस्तत्र समीपपरिवर्तिनः
Having spoken thus, the lord of the rākṣasas addressed his ministers and those night-wanderers standing nearby.
ज्ञायतां तूर्णमेतेषां सर्वेषां च वनौकसाम्। शोककाले समुत्पन्ने हर्षकारणमुत्थितम्
Quickly find out the cause of this joy that has arisen among all these forest-dwellers at a time of sorrow.
तथोक्तास्ते सुसम्भ्रान्ताः प्राकारमधिरुह्य च। ददृशुः पालितां सेनां सुग्रीवेण महात्मना
Thus addressed, they, greatly agitated, ascended the rampart and saw the army guarded by the noble Sugriva.
तौ च मुक्तौ सुघोरेण शरबन्धेन राघवौ। समुत्थितौ महाभागौ विषेदुः सर्वराक्षसाः
And those two illustrious sons of Raghu, released from the dreadful binding of arrows, rose up, causing all the rakshasas to despair.
संत्रस्तहृदयाः सर्वे प्राकारादवरुह्य ते। विवर्णा राक्षसा घोरा राक्षसेन्द्रमुपस्थिताः
All those fierce rakshasas, their hearts terrified, descended from the rampart, pale-faced, and approached their lord of the rakshasas.
तदप्रियं दीनमुखा रावणस्य च राक्षसाः। कृत्स्नं निवेदयामासुर्यथावद् वाक्यकोविदाः
With distressed faces, the rakshasas faithfully reported all the unpleasant news to Ravana, skilled in speech.
यौ ताविन्द्रजिता युद्धे भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। निबद्धौ शरबन्धेन निष्प्रकम्पभुजौ कृतौ
Those two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, whom Indrajit had bound in battle with a net of arrows, their arms unwavering, were made captive.
