हताविन्द्रजिताख्यात वैदेह्या रामलक्ष्मणौ। पुष्पकं तत्समारोप्य दर्शयध्वं रणे हतौ
"Tell Vaidehī that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa have been slain by Indrajit; place her in the Puṣpaka chariot and show her their bodies, fallen in battle."
यदाश्रयादवष्टब्धा नेयं मामुपतिष्ठते। सोऽस्या भर्ता सह भ्रात्रा निहतो रणमूर्धनि
"She, relying on them and emboldened by their presence, does not submit to me; but now her husband, along with his brother, has been killed on the battlefield."
निर्विशङ्का निरुद्विग्ना निरपेक्षा च मैथिली। मामुपस्थास्यते सीता सर्वाभरणभूषिता
Sītā, adorned with all her ornaments, will approach me without fear, without anxiety, and without hesitation.
अद्य कालवशं प्राप्तं रणे रामं सलक्ष्मणम्। अवेक्ष्य विनिवृत्ता सा चान्यां गतिमपश्यती
Seeing that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa had now fallen under the sway of fate in battle, she turned back, finding no other course.
अनपेक्षा विशालाक्षी मामुपस्थास्यते स्वयम्। तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा रावणस्य दुरात्मनः
Without concern, the large-eyed one will herself come to me—so, hearing these words of the wicked Rāvaṇa,
राक्षस्यस्तास्तथेत्युक्त्वा जग्मुर्वै यत्र पुष्पकम्। ततः पुष्पकमादाय राक्षस्यो रावणाज्ञया
The rākṣasīs, having replied 'So be it,' went to where the Puṣpaka chariot was; then, by Rāvaṇa's command,
अशोकवनिकास्थां तां मैथिलीं समुपानयन्। तामादाय तु राक्षस्यो भर्तृशोकपराजिताम्
They brought Maithilī, who was staying in the Aśoka grove; taking her, defeated by grief for her husband,
सीतामारोपयामासुर्विमानं पुष्पकं तदा। ततः पुष्पकमारोप्य सीतां त्रिजटया सह
The rākṣasīs then made Sītā, overcome with sorrow for her husband, board the Puṣpaka chariot.
जग्मुर्दर्शयितुं तस्यै राक्षस्यो रामलक्ष्मणौ। रावणश्चारयामास पताकाध्वजमालिनीम्
Then, having placed Sītā together with Trijaṭā on the Puṣpaka, the rākṣasīs went to show her Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
प्राघोषयत हृष्टश्च लङ्कायां राक्षसेश्वरः। राघवो लक्ष्मणश्चैव हताविन्द्रजिता रणे
And Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, adorned with banners and flags, had it proclaimed with joy throughout Laṅkā:
विमानेनापि गत्वा तु सीता त्रिजटया सह। ददर्श वानराणां तु सर्वं सैन्यं निपातितम्
'Rāghava and Lakṣmaṇa have been slain in battle by Indrajit.' Then Sītā, traveling in the chariot with Trijaṭā,
प्रहृष्टमनसश्चापि ददर्श पिशिताशनान्। वानरांश्चातिदुःखार्तान् रामलक्ष्मणपार्श्वतः
Saw the entire army of the vānaras laid low, and also saw the flesh-eating rākṣasas, their hearts exultant, and the vānaras, overwhelmed with great sorrow, near Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
ततः सीता ददर्शोभौ शयानौ शरतल्पगौ। लक्ष्मणं चैव रामं च विसंज्ञौ शरपीडितौ
Then Sītā saw both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa lying on a bed of arrows, unconscious and tormented by shafts.
विध्वस्तकवचौ वीरौ विप्रविद्धशरासनौ। सायकैश्छिन्नसर्वाङ्गौ शरस्तम्बमयौ क्षितौ
Those two heroes, their armor shattered, their bows cast aside, all their limbs cut by arrows, lay on the ground, their bodies like pillars of arrows.
तौ दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरौ तत्र प्रवीरौ पुरुषर्षभौ। शयानौ पुण्डरीकाक्षौ कुमाराविव पावकी
Seeing those two brothers there, mighty among men, lotus-eyed, lying as if they were sons of fire,
शरतल्पगतौ वीरौ तथाभूतौ नरर्षभौ। दुःखार्ता करुणं सीता सुभृशं विललाप ह
Those two heroes, best of men, lying on a bed of arrows in such a state—Sītā, overwhelmed by grief, lamented bitterly and piteously.
भर्तारमनवद्याङ्गी लक्ष्मणं चासितेक्षणा। प्रेक्ष्य पांसुषु चेष्टन्तौ रुरोद जनकात्मजा
Beholding her blameless-limbed husband and Lakṣmaṇa, the dark-eyed one, writhing in the dust, Janaka's daughter wept.
सबाष्पशोकाभिहता समीक्ष्य तौ भ्रातरौ देवसुतप्रभावौ। वितर्कयन्ती निधनं तयोः सा दुःखान्विता वाक्यमिदं जगाद
Stricken with tears and sorrow, gazing upon those two brothers, radiant as sons of the gods, she pondered their death and, afflicted with grief, spoke these words.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे सप्तचत्वारिंशः सर्गः
Thus ends the forty-seventh sarga in the Yuddhakāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the first poem.

Hear now the forty-eighth sarga in the Yuddhakāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
भर्तारं निहतं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम्। विललाप भृशं सीता करुणं शोककर्शिता
Seeing her husband slain and mighty Lakṣmaṇa as well, Sītā, tormented by grief, wept bitterly and piteously.
ऊचुर्लाक्षणिका ये मां पुत्रिण्यविधवेति च। तेऽद्य सर्वे हते रामे ज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः
Those who said I would never be widowed, that I would always have sons, all those wise ones are today proven false, with Rāma slain.
यज्वनो महिषीं ये मामूचुः पत्नीं च सत्रिणः। तेऽद्य सर्वे हते रामे ज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः
Those who called me the queen of a sacrificer, the wife of one who performs great rites, all those wise ones are today proven false, with Rāma slain.
वीरपार्थिवपत्नीनां ये विदुर्भर्तृपूजिताम्। तेऽद्य सर्वे हते रामे ज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः
Those who knew me as the honored wife of a heroic king, all those wise ones are today proven false, with Rāma slain.
ऊचुः संश्रवणे ये मां द्विजाः कार्तान्तिकाः शुभाम्। तेऽद्य सर्वे हते रामे ज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः
Those twice-born ones who, in auspicious ceremonies, declared me blessed, all those wise ones are today proven false, with Rāma slain.
इमानि खलु पद्मानि पादयोर्वै कुलस्त्रियः। आधिराज्येऽभिषिच्यन्ते नरेन्द्रैः पतिभिः सह
These very marks, indeed, are lotuses at the feet of noble women, who are anointed in sovereignty together with their royal husbands.
वैधव्यं यान्ति यैर्नार्योऽलक्षणैर्भाग्यदुर्लभाः। नात्मनस्तानि पश्यामि पश्यन्ती हतलक्षणा
By which marks women of ill fortune, lacking destiny, become widows—those I do not see in myself, though I now see my fortune destroyed.
सत्यनामानि पद्मानि स्त्रीणामुक्तानि लक्षणैः। तान्यद्य निहते रामे वितथानि भवन्ति मे
The marks of women, called 'true lotuses,' have been spoken of; but today, with Rāma slain, for me they have become empty words.
केशाः सूक्ष्माः समा नीला भ्रुवौ चासंहते मम। वृत्ते चारोमके जङ्घे दन्ताश्चाविरला मम
My hair is fine, even, and dark; my eyebrows are unjoined; my shins are rounded and smooth; my teeth are even and unbroken.
शङ्खे नेत्रे करौ पादौ गुल्फावूरू समौ चितौ। अनुवृत्तनखाः स्निग्धाः समाश्चाङ्गुलयो मम
My eyes are shaped like conch shells, my hands and feet are well-formed, my ankles and thighs are symmetrical and well-marked; my nails are smooth and even, and my fingers are straight.
