O king of the monkeys, now is not the time to give in to despair; even excessive affection at such a time leads to death.
Therefore, abandoning despair, which destroys all undertakings, consider what is beneficial for the armies led by Rāma.
Or else, let Rāma be protected until consciousness returns; for when the two sons of Kakutstha regain their senses, our fear will be dispelled.
This is nothing for Rāma, nor does Rāma wish to die; for Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, does not abandon those whose life is spent.
Therefore, encourage yourself and your forces, until I restore all the armies again.
These monkeys, their eyes wide open with fear and trembling with dread, have been whispering to one another, O best of monkeys.
But when they see me running forward, filled with joy, let the monkeys abandon their fear as easily as they would cast off a garland they have already worn.
Then Vibhīṣaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, comforted Sugrīva and once again reassured the scattered army of monkeys.
Indrajit, master of illusions, surrounded by his entire army, entered the city of Laṅkā and approached his father.
Then, delighted, Rāvaṇa rose up and embraced his son in the midst of the Rākṣasas, having heard that his enemies had been struck down.
He smelled his son's head and, his heart filled with joy, asked him; and as his father inquired, Indrajit reported everything as it had happened.
How those two were rendered motionless and powerless by the binding of arrows—
His heart filled with the force of joy, hearing the words of that great chariot-warrior, he cast off the fever that had arisen because of Rāma, and, his voice exultant, he congratulated his son.
Listen now to the forty-seventh sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
When Rāvaṇa's son had entered Laṅkā, his purpose accomplished, the foremost monkeys surrounded Rāma and guarded him.
Hanumān, Aṅgada, Nīla, Suṣeṇa, Kumuda, Nala, Gaja, Gavākṣa, Gavaya, Śarabha, and Gandhamādana—
Jāmbavān, Ṛṣabha, Skandha, Rambha, Śatabali, Pṛthu, and the arrayed and ready leaders, all took up trees from every side.
The monkeys, scanning all directions—across, above, and around—even mistook the slightest movement in the grass for Rākṣasas.
Rāvaṇa, delighted, having sent away his son Indrajit, then summoned the Rākṣasī guards assigned to protect Sītā.
The Rākṣasīs and also Trijaṭā, at his command, came before him; then the lord of the Rākṣasas, pleased, spoke to the Rākṣasīs.
"Tell Vaidehī that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa have been slain by Indrajit; place her in the Puṣpaka chariot and show her their bodies, fallen in battle."
"She, relying on them and emboldened by their presence, does not submit to me; but now her husband, along with his brother, has been killed on the battlefield."
Sītā, adorned with all her ornaments, will approach me without fear, without anxiety, and without hesitation.
Seeing that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa had now fallen under the sway of fate in battle, she turned back, finding no other course.
Without concern, the large-eyed one will herself come to me—so, hearing these words of the wicked Rāvaṇa,
The rākṣasīs, having replied 'So be it,' went to where the Puṣpaka chariot was; then, by Rāvaṇa's command,
They brought Maithilī, who was staying in the Aśoka grove; taking her, defeated by grief for her husband,
The rākṣasīs then made Sītā, overcome with sorrow for her husband, board the Puṣpaka chariot.
Then, having placed Sītā together with Trijaṭā on the Puṣpaka, the rākṣasīs went to show her Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
And Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, adorned with banners and flags, had it proclaimed with joy throughout Laṅkā:
